different from that of M, and M, (see below). Although M, and M, agree in the arrangement of chapters, there are some disagreements of another kind between them, which shows that they come from different "families”. M, is generally correct. M, contains many spelling errors, and sometimes such errors have been erased. M, contains some marginal notes in a different hand. There are also such places where My contains errors but M2 gives the correct forms. The scribal peculiarities of M, may be briefly noted as follows : स्थ is always written as छ, त्य as त्य, and के as 6क.
The Limbdi manuscript ends as follows (folio 76): - इति महामहोपाध्यायश्रीशशधरविरचितं न्यायप्रकरणं समाप्तम् । इति । ग्रन्थान २५००।
शुभं भवतु । संवत् १६६४ वर्षे वैशाखमासे कृष्णपक्षे एकादश्यां तिथौ शनिवासरे श्रीभावडहराजगच्छे पण्डितश्री ५ जिनदेवसूरिविजयराज्य उपाध्यायश्रीमंगलजोशिष्यमराजलिखितं पिचमन्दपुरीमध्ये ।।
It is clear that this manuscript was copied by a student-scribe for the purpose of study in 1607 A. D. This manuscript agrees with the I. O. in many respects. And I think they both belong to the same “family". The manuscript of the Jodhpur collection is dated. It belongs to the 16th cen. tuary A.D. and begins exactly as the I, O., viz., “Vacakasirah--" Thus, it must also belong to the same “family" as 1.0. The alternative title is also given at the end of the Jodhpur ms, as Nyāyaratna. The Jesalmer catalogue lists two manuscripts both of which are called Nyāyaratna-prakarana sagadbara-sutra. One of these two belongs to 1761 A.D. while the other has no date. The Nagpur collection lists a manuscript of NSD which is probably the earliest of the available mss. of NSD: Serial No. 973, Accession No. 355, Script : Nagri, folios 1-184, This manuscript is dated 1453 Śaka era (i.e., 1531 A.D.) This one presumably predates our M. But I was unable to examine this manuscript.
Arrangement of Chapters in NSD. The NSD contains several chapters or Vadas. The number of chapters is 27 or 26 (if we combine the chapters on Vyapti and V yaptigraha as one.) The last few chapters are found to be differently arranged in different manuscripts. H. T. Colebrooke listed a few chapters in his I. O. Mss. catalogue and then noted : "For a more complete list of Vadas see Burnell's Tangore Catalogue of Manuscripts."
The following computation of the lists of chapters may be useful for comparison. Chapter titles are usually supplied from the colophons of chapters. But, as will be clear from the following lists, such colophons were sometimes missing :
