kindness, good conduct, contentment, endurance, pure life, sublimity, triumph of truth, humility, refuge etc.
The author has brought forth such examples from fictions connected with both the traditions which bear an extraordinary similarity in respect of plot, presentation, dialogue etc.
Whereas the first part is very important in view of philosophical and ethical studies of both the traditions, the second part is immensely useful in respect of story-plot, examples, etc.
Even their tone that carries emotion and the expectant analogue, is not dissimilar and a distinct call is heard echoing dutyconsciousness and purity in action.
The author's prudence in quoting the verses in their original form and style in Prākrit and Pāli, in different contexts of sermons, is indeed praiseworthy.
It is quite appropriate and a matter of delight that this volume has been edited by Dr. Chhagan Lal Shastri, a scholar with national reputation, renowned for his erudite learning and proficiency in oriental languages like Prākrit, Pāli, Apabhramsha, etc. He had been teaching in Research Institute of Prākrit Jainology and Ahimsa in Vaishali, Bihar, which is well-known for studies of Jainology and Prakrit in our country. Dr. Shastri has deep knowledge and eminance in the Vedic, Jaina and Buddhist schools of philosophies and he has been rightly chosen to guide in instituting an independent Department of Jainology in the University of Madras, for which I find no words of appreciation.
With his rich experience, Dr. Shastri has made this volume further interestingly useful to the readers by inserting indicative and suggestive headings sub-headings wherever necessary. I hope this book will be widely received and appreciated by the Jaina and Buddhist researchers as well as students.
I have absolutely no doubt that this volume, as its preceding two parts, is a unique gift by Munishi Nagrajji, which will secure a permanent place in Indology.
It will be highly appropriate for the various Universities to prescribe this book for their post-graduate courses in Jaina and Buddhist philosophical and comparative Indological studies, so that
