छछुन्दर वाली गति हुई । न तो वे उस रूप में उसे मान सकते हैं और न सर्वथा उसे छोड़ ही सकते हैं । ईथर क्रमशः जैन दर्शन में वरिंगत धर्म - द्रव्य की परिभाषा में समाहित होने लगा - जो वर्ण- गन्ध-रस-स्पर्श-रहित, अरूप, व्यापक, प्रदेशात्मक प्रस्तित्वमान् है । किन्तु बद्धमूल संस्कारों के कारण वैज्ञानिक इस प्रकार के तत्त्व को वास्तविक द्रव्य कहने में हिचकिचाते भी हैं । साथ-साथ उसे द्रव्य कहे बिना कोई चारा भी नहीं है । सुप्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक सर जेम्स जीन्स 'मिस्टीरियस यूनिवर्स' जो कि कैम्ब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी में दिये गये भाषणों का संकलन है, में 'ईथर और सापेक्षवाद' शीर्षक लेख में लिखते हैं
"ईथर' शक्ति के अपने नाना रूपों में आधुनिक भौतिक विज्ञान में प्रमुख स्थान रखता है । यद्यपि बहुत से लोग उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी के साथ इसकी संगति होने के कारण ईथर के स्थान पर (Space) शब्द को व्यवहार में लाना चाहते हैं। किन्तु यह कोई अधिक महत्त्व की बात नहीं है । मैं तो यह सोचता हूँ कि ईथर को उदाहरण का ढाँचा मान लेना चाहिए। इसका अस्तित्व विषुवत् रेखा या उत्तरी ध्रुव या ग्रीनविच में मेरीडियन के अस्तित्व की तरह ही वास्तविक भी हो सकता

1. The ether in its various forms of energy dominates modern physics, though many prefer to avoid the term 'Ether' because of its nineteenth century association, and use the term 'Space'. The term used does not much matter. I think the best way of regarding the ether is as a frame of reference, its existence is just as real, and just as unreal, as that of the equator, or the north pole, or the meridian of Greenwich. It is a creation of thought, not of solid substance. We heve seen how the ether, which is the same for all of us, as distinguished from your ether or my be supposed to pervade all time as well as all space, valid distinction can be drawn between its occupancy of time and space. The frame work in time to which we must compare the time dimension of the Ether is of course ready to hand, it is the division of the day into hours minutes and seconds. And unless we think of this division as material, which no one ever does or has done, we are not justified in thinking of the Ether as material. In the new light which the theory of relativity has cast over science, we see that a material Ether filling space could only be accompanied by a material Ether filling time-the two stand
