_ "यह ईधर किस तरह का था ? प्रापतियों और विपरीतता नजर में आने लगी, क्योंकि यह सिद्ध हो चुका था कि (१) ईथरं सब गैसों से पतला है, (२) फौलाद (लोहा) से भी अधिक सघन है, (३) सर्वत्र नितान्त एक-सा है, (४) अगुरुलघु (भार शून्य) है, (५) और किसी एलैक्टोन के पास शीशे से भी अधिक भारी है।" ___ 'रिलेटिविटी एण्ड कोमनसेन्स' पुस्तक में श्री एफ. एम. डेन्टन लिखते हैं---
"न्यूटन' का ईथर सघन है, तो भी उसमें बिना संघर्ष भूत (पदार्थ) स्वच्छन्द गति से भ्रमण करते हैं। यह लोचदार है परन्तु इसके और-और आकार नहीं हो सकते । यह घूमता है लेकिन इसकी गति दृष्टिगोचर नहीं होती । भूत-पदार्थों पर इसका प्रभाव पड़ता है पर इस पर उनका नहीं। इसके पिंड नहीं है और न हम इसके पृथक्पृथक् अंशों को पहचान सकते हैं। यह स्थिर तारों की अपेक्षा निष्क्रिय है तो भी एक दूसरे की अपेक्षा से तारे गतिशील माने गये हैं।" _ 'रेस्टलेस यूनिवर्स' पुस्तक में श्री मेक्सबोर्न लिखते हैं
"सौ वर्ष पूर्व ईथर एक Jelly की तरह का लोचदार पदार्थ माना गया था,
something they called the 'Ether' and imagined it as an utterly thin and utterly elastic, fluid, that flowed undisturbed between the particles of the material universe and fillen all 'empty space' of every kind.
What was this 'Ether' like ? Difficulties and contradictions appeared at once. For it was proved to be (1) thinner than the thinnest gas, (2) more rigid than steel, (3) absolutely the same everywhere, (4) absolutely weightless, (5) in the neighbourhood of any electron immensely heavier than lead.
1. The Newtonian Ether is rigid, yet allows all matter to move obout it without friction or resistense; it is elastic but can not be distorted; it moves but its motion can not be detected. It exerts force on matter but matter exerts no force on it; it has no mass nor has it any parts which can be identified; it is said to be at rest relatively to the 'fixed stars'; yet the stars are known to be in motion relatively to one another.
2. A hundred years ago the Ether was regarded as one elastic body something as a jelly, but much stiffer and lighter, so that it could vibrate extremely, rapidly, but a great many phenomena, culminating in the Michelson experiment and the theory of Relativity, showed that Ether must be something very different from ordinary terrestrial substances.
