The main basis of the Jaina doctrines, is twelve angas. Their auothor is Sudharmasvamin, the fifth apostle, Sthavira (veteran) saints have composed upangas by utilizing these angas. Mallavadin Suri has made a free use of both of them (i. e. angas and upangas). Therein Acaranga (Ayara) Sthanaga (Thana) and Bhagavati (Vivahapannatti) are three 'angasutras whereas Jivabhigama Pannavana etc, are upanga-sutras. Besides, the author (Mallavadin Suri) has quoted from Nandi and Anuyogadvara known as 'Sutra'. All these works and their authors belong to a very ancient period.
Katyayana. In various places the author of 'Nayacakra' has made a free use of aphorisms of Panini, Vartka and Patanjala 'Mahabhasya' on them. there is a difference of opinion regarding the date of *Panini. Max Mullar, a great German scholar assigns to him the date 350 B, C, Prof, Weber 400 B, C., Goldstukor Dr. Bhandarkar and Dr. Belvalkar 700 B. C., Principal Rajwade 800 B. C., Bharatacarya 900 B. C. Pandit Satyavrata samasvami 2400 B. C. and Yudhis thira 'mimamsaka a date earlier than 2800 B, C.

Sharana Agraval looks upon Panini as a contemporary of Yudhisthira and Pariksita, by giving evidence from 'Astadhyayi' a work of Panini. He has fixed the date of Yudhishtra and that of Pariksta. According to his calculation these dates are almost 4369 years from to-day.
A good many 'Vartikas have been composed on the grammer of Panini. Therein only the Vartika composed by Katyayana is well known, In the Mahabhagya' only this Vartika' is mainly expounded of the various names of the author of this Vartika', even the name 'Vararuci' is wellknown. Amongst grammarians he is an honest author. Patanjali has used the word 'Bhagavan' for Katyayana in following sentance :

But Shabarsvamin has said in the following sentence of his 'Mimamsadarsana (10-S-4) that the saying of Katyayana is invalid :
" सदादित्वात् पाणिनेर्वचनं प्रमाणम् , असदवादित्वात् न कात्यायनस्य"
On the basis of this sentence Katyayana's sayings are said to be invalid. All the modern authors have however considered Katyayanas reliable, Katyayana is anterior to Patanjali but posterior to Panini. There is a difference of opinion amongst scholars regarding his (Katyayana's) date. The Jaina.
