APPENDIX
Some of the Nyāya-Vaiseșika Scholars referred to in Tt.
[Gn. has quoted at least fifteen scholars by name, out of which Udayana, Paksadhara Miśra, Ganges'a, Vardhamān and like are too wellknown to need any introduction. Hence a short bio-data of only seven scholars is given herewith.]* 1. Bhavānanda Bhattācārya
He is generally known as Siddhāntavāgis'a. He belonged to Bengal and was the pupil of Krsnadāsa. Prof. Bhattachārya thinks Bhavānanda to be a contemporary of Gunānanda who flourished in the second half of the 16th cent. A. D. However the date of Gn. suggests that this date may be earlier.
Bhavānanda wrote commentaries onĀtmatattaviveka (Udayana] Nyāyalīlāvati [Vallabha), Tattvacintāmaņi [Ganges'a), Kiraņāvaliprakāśa and
Nyāyalīlāvatīprakāśa (Vardhamāna), Tattvacintāmanyāloka (Pakshadharar mis'raa] and Nyāyalīlāvati prakāśadidhiti(Raghunātha). His only available independent work is Siddhāntarahasya'. 2. Haridāsa—Nyāyālamkāra
Haridāsa also belonged to Bengal. His commentary on Kusumāñjali is well-known. He is generally supposed to be earlier than A. D. 1599. However on the authority of Gn., it can be pushed earlier than A. D. 1553 safely. He has also written commentaries on Tc. and Tattvacintāmanyāloka.
( The data for this appendix is taken from "History of Navya Nyāya in Mithila"-Prof. Dinesh Chandra Bhattachārya and "Gleanings from the History and Bibliography of the Nyāya-Vaiseșika Literature”—Pt. Gopināth Kavirāja.
