આંચલિકગચ્છાચાર્ય પૂ.આ.શ્રી. ભુવનતુંગસૂરિ મહારાજા અંચલગચ્છની પરંપરામાં વિ.સં. ૧૨૧૬માં દીક્ષિત બની વિ.સં. ૧૨૩૪માં સૂરિપદને પામેલા પૂ.આ.શ્રી ધર્મઘોષસૂરિજી મહારાજ એક પ્રભાવક આચાર્ય હતા. તેઓશ્રીમદે પોતાના જીવનકાળ દરમ્યાન અનેકાનેક ગ્રંથ રચનાનાં કાર્યો કર્યાં હતાં. વાદવિજેતા આદિ અનેક પદવી પામેલા પ્રકાંડ વિદ્વાન તેઓ શ્રીમદે મહેન્દ્રકુમાર નામના નવ વર્ષના બાળકને વિ.સં. ૧૨૩૭માં દીક્ષા આપી. વિ.સં. ૧૨૯૩માં એમને આચાર્યપદવી આપીને પૂ.આ.મહેન્દ્રસિંહસૂરિજી મહારાજ નામે ઘોષિત કર્યા. તે પૂ.આ. મહેન્દ્રસિંહસૂરિજી મહારાજના પ્રભાવક શિષ્ય પરિવારમાં પૂ.આ.શ્રી ભુવનતુંગસૂરિજી મહારાજ થયા હતા.

સાહિત્ય રચનાનાં કાર્ય સાથો સાથ તે મહાપુરુષે અનેક રાજવીઓને જૈન ધર્મના ઉપાસક બનાવ્યા હતા. સંઘ રક્ષાના પ્રસંગે તે મહાપુરુષ મંત્રવાદી તરીકે આગવું સ્થાન ધરાવતા હતા. તેઓશ્રીએ રાજા રાઉલ ખેંગાર ચોથાની સમક્ષ જુનાગઢમાં તક્ષનાગને પ્રત્યક્ષ આણીને સોળ ગારુડીઓના વાદ જીત્યા હતા અને તેમને આજીવન પર્યત સર્પ પકડવાનો તથા ખેલાવવાનો ધંધો ન કરવો એવો નિયમ લેવડાવ્યો હતો. આજ આચાર્યદેવે રાજા પાસેથી ફરમાન મેળવી સવા લાખ જાળ છોડાવી હતી. તેમજ પાંચસો ભઠ્ઠીઓ પણ બંધ કરાવી હતી. લોકવાચકા મુજબ એવું પણ કહેવાય છે કે તેઓશ્રીએ ચોર્યાસી જ્ઞાતિના વણિકો અને ચોર્યાસી ગચ્છના આચાર્યોના દેખતાં આદીશ્વર ભગવાનની પ્રતિમાને બોલાવી મંત્ર ચમત્કાર પણ દેખાડેલો હતો.
