INTRODUCTION
Svayambhu's date In the discussion of Svayambhū’s date in Part I (pp. 7-9) of PC, the range between A. D. 677 and 960 could not be narrowed down in any definite manner for want of some positive clue. Such a clue is now fortunatey available from the text included in this Part. In the description of Hanumat's journey from Lankā to Ayodhyā ( 69.1 to 69.8), there is a reference to Seunadesa. 69 6 3 reads as follows: * ,
puņu sari Bhimarahi jal’oha-phāra /
jā Seuņa-desaho amiya-dhāra // It means : Further (they saw) the river Bhimarathī, carrying a vast mass of waters; it was a veritable stream of nectar for the Seuņa-country'
Now we know from a copper-plate grant of Seuņacandra II that Seuņacandra I, son of Drdhaprahāra (who was the founder of the Yādava dynasty of Devagiri), founded the city called 'Seuņapura' in Sindinera.
BhagvanlalIndraji and other authorities place this Dşdhaprabära in the first half of the 9th cent A. D.: As the date of Seuņacandra II is 1069, and as he is seventh in line after Seuņacandra I, the latter is likely to have flourished in about A. D. 860, if we count 30 years on an average for each generation. This is further supported by the fact that making a similar calculation on the basis of the date of Vaddigato (c. A. D. 916), who is third from Seuņacandra I, we reach about A. D. 826. Accordingly if Seuņacandra I founded the Seuņapura (after which the region over which he ruled came to be known as Seuņadeśa') in, say, about A. D. 840, it coư d have become fairly well-known by about A. D. 860. In that cảse we can reasonably assign Svayambhū to a period approximately between A. D. 840–920. The latter half of the ninth century can be taken as his literarily active period. Half a century later appeared the poet Puşpadanta. Incidentally the abovề reference from the PC, throws some fresh light on the location of the Seuņadeśa. Bhagvanlal Indraji identified Sindinera (where
