सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
That which experiences feeling is called mind and what is experienced by mind is called feeling. The cause of attachment is called pleasant and the cause of aversion is unpleasant. (88) .
भावेसु जो गिद्धिमुवेइ तिव्वं, अकालियं पावइ से विणासं।
रागाउरे कामगुणेसु गिद्धे, करेणुमग्गावहिए व नागे॥८९॥ जो भावों में अत्यधिक गृद्धि करता है, वह उसी प्रकार अकाल (असमय) में विनष्ट हो जाता है जिस प्रकार हथिनी के प्रति आकृष्ट और कामगुणों में गृद्ध, राग में आतुर बना हुआ हाथी विनाश को प्राप्त हो जाता है॥ ८९॥
One who is infatuated with pleasant feelings is plagued by attachment to end up in untimely ruin, just as an elephant, obsessed by feeling (feeling lust for a she elephant) meets his end. (89)
जे यावि दोसं समुवेइ तिव्वं, तंसिक्खणे से उ उवेइ दुक्खं । . दुद्दन्तदोसेण सएण जन्तू, न किंचि भावं अवरज्झई से॥९०॥ जो अमनोज्ञ-अप्रिय भाव के प्रति तीव्र द्वेष करता है, उसी क्षण वह प्राणी स्वयं अपने ही दुर्दान्त दोष के कारण दुःख पाता है। इसमें भाव का किंचित् भी अपराध अथवा दोष नहीं है॥ ९० ॥
Contrary to this, he who is intensely averse (to unpleasant feelings) instantly suffers pain due to his own insurmountable aversion. There is no fault of feelings (pleasant or unpleasant) in this. (90)
एगन्तरत्ते रुइरंसि भावे, अतालिसे से कुणई पओसं।
• दुक्खस्स संपीलमुवेइ बाले, न लिप्पई तेण मुणी विरागो॥९१॥ जो व्यक्ति रुचिर (प्रिय अथवा रुचिकर) भाव में एकान्त-अत्यधिक रूप से गृद्ध (रक्त) होता है तथा उसके प्रतिकूल अप्रिय-अरुचिकर भाव के प्रति प्रद्वेष करता है वह व्यक्ति दुःखजन्य पीड़ा को प्राप्त करता है लेकिन विरक्त (राग-द्वेष से विरत) मुनि उसमें (प्रिय-अप्रिय भावों में) लिप्त नहीं होता ॥ ९१ ॥
He who gets exclusively and excessively infatuated with pleasant feelings is averse to unpleasant feelings. That ignorant suffers pain. But the detached ascetic does not get involved in them (pleasant and unpleasant feelings), does not have attachment or aversion for them. (91)
भावाणुगासाणुगए य जीवे, चराचरे हिंसइ ऽणेगरूवे।
चित्तेहि ते परितावेइ बाले, पीलेइ अत्तट्ठगुरू किलिटे॥९२॥ (प्रिय) भावों की आशा का अनुगमन करने वाला व्यक्ति अनेक प्रकार के चराचर जीवों की हिंसा करता है। अपने स्वार्थ के ही सर्वोच्च महत्व देने वाला, राग-द्वेष संपीड़ित-क्लिष्ट अज्ञानी जीव उन (त्रस-स्थावर) जीवों को भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार से परितापित और पीड़ित करता है॥ ९२॥
A person hankering for pleasant feelings indulges in violence towards mobile and immobile beings many ways. Giving importance to his self-interest and tarnished with attachment and aversion, an ignorant being torments those beings various ways. (92)
