मृगापुत्र और माता-पिता के संवाद
(1) जातिस्मरण से जागृत मृगापुत्र माता-पिता के पास संयम की अनुमति लेने आया । वह बोला-जिस प्रकार आग में जलते हुये घर से गृहस्वामी अपनी मूल्यवान वस्तु निकाल लेता है, उसी प्रकार मैं कषायों की अग्नि में जलती हुई अपनी आत्मा को निकालना चाहता हूँ।
(2) माता-पिता ने कहा- जैसे प्रज्वलित अग्निशिखा को पीना, समुद्र को तैरना, मेरु पर्वत को तराजू में तोलना और तलवार की धार पर चलना कठिन है, वैसे ही संयम का आचरण अति दुष्कर है।

DIALOGUE BETWEEN MRIGAPUTRA AND HIS PARENTS
(1) Enlightened by memories of the past birth, Mrigaputra came to his parents for their permission for initiation. He said-As the owner of a house takes out his valuable assets from the house at fire; in the same way I wish to take out my soul from the fire of passions.
(2) The parents replied-As it is very difficult to swallow the flames of burning fire, to swim across an ocean, to weigh mountain Meru with a scale and to walk on a sword's edge; in the same way the practice of ascetic-discipline is very tough.
