विहार करते हुए भगवान महावीर कौशाम्बी नगरी के चन्द्रावतरण उद्यान में पधारे। उनके दर्शनार्थ तत्त्वों की ज्ञाता श्रमणोपासिका 'जयन्ती' भी आईं। भगवान की धर्मसभा समाप्त होने के पश्चात् उसने हाथ जोड़कर भगवान से कुछ प्रश्न किये, जिसका समाधान भगवान ने इस प्रकार दिया
जयन्ती-“हे भन्ते! जीव सोता अच्छा या जागता?"
प्रभु-"जयन्ती! अधर्मी का सोना अच्छा क्योंकि जब तक अधर्मी सोया रहेगा, पापकर्म नहीं करेगा। उठने पर वह पापकर्म में लिप्त हो जायेगा। धर्मी का जागना अच्छा। धर्मी व्यक्ति जागृत रहता है तो वह धर्म में प्रवृत्त रहता है। जागृत अवस्था में वह अधिक से अधिक धर्म कार्य में व्यस्त रहेगा।"
जयन्ती-“प्रभु! जीव दुर्बल अच्छा या सबल?"
प्रभु-"जयन्ती! पापी जीव दुर्बल अच्छा, क्योंकि ऐसी स्थिति में वह कम से कम पापकर्म करेगा। जीवों के शोक, दु:ख, परिताप का कारण नहीं बनेगा। धर्मी सबल अच्छा, क्योंकि वह सबल होगा तो अधिक से अधिक धर्माचरण कर सकेगा।"
जयन्ती-"प्रभु! जीव भारी कैसे और हल्का कैसे होता है?"
प्रभु-"जो जीव अठारह पाप स्थानों का सेवन करता है। कर्मरज से लिप्त उसका आत्मा कर्म बन्धनों की बेड़ियों में जकड़ी गुरुत्व को प्राप्त होता है। इसके विपरीत अठारह पाप स्थान का त्याग करने से जीव कर्म पुद्गलों से रहित निर्लेप हो जाता है और लघुत्व को प्राप्त होता है।"

While his wanderings Bhagavan Mahavir came to Chandravataran garden in Kaushambi city. Shramanopasika Jayanti, a knower of the fundamental entities, also came to pay homage. After the discourse was over she joined her palms and asked some questions from Bhagavan. The answer Bhagavan gave were
Jayanti-"Bhante! What is good for living beings - to remain sleeping or awake?”
Bhagavan-"Jayanti ! It is better for irreligious to remain asleep because while they are asleep they do not indulge in sinful deeds. The moment he is awake he gets involved in sin. It is good for a religious person to be awake because as long he is awake he indulges in pious deeds. When he is awake he is busy more and more in religious deeds."
Jayanti-"Bhante ! What is good for living beings - their being strong or their being weak?" ___Bhagavan-"Jayanti! It is better for irreligious to be weak because being weak they will indulge less and less in sinful deeds and will not cause pain, grief and misery to other beings. It is good for a religious person to be strong because being strong he will indulge more and more in pious deeds."
Jayanti—"Bhante ! How does a soul become heavy or light?
Bhagavan—"Jayanti ! Ajiva who indulges in eighteen activities of sin, his soul acquires the dirt of karma and is shackled in its bondage to become heavy. A jiva who abandons the said eighteen activities of sin gets rid of the dirt of karma and becomes light."
