शिव राजर्षि हस्तिनापुर के राजा शिव ने गंगा तट पर दिशाप्रोक्षक प्रवज्या ग्रहण की और बेले-तेले की तपस्या करते हुए दिक्चक्रवाल तप करने लगे। तपस्या करते-करते उनको विभंगज्ञान 5 उत्पन्न हो गया और वे सात द्वीप-समुद्रों तक देखने-जानने लगे, जिससे उनको यह भ्रम उत्पन्न
हुआ कि इस लोक में केवल सात द्वीप-समुद्र ही हैं, इससे आगे लोक समाप्त है। तब वे लोगों से ऐसा कहने लगे।
एक बार गौतम स्वामी गोचरी के लिए हस्तिनापुर नगर में पधारे। वहाँ उन्होंने लोगों के मुख से शिव राजर्षि का कथन सुना तो वापस आकर अपनी जिज्ञासा शान्त करने के लिए भगवान महावीर स्वामी से प्रश्न पृच्छा की। तब प्रभु ने इसका समाधान देते हुए बताया"हे गौतम! शिव राजर्षि को विभंगज्ञान उत्पन्न हुआ है और उनका यह कथन मिथ्या है कि लोक में केवल सात द्वीप-समुद्र हैं। गौतम! लोक में असंख्य द्वीप-समुद्र हैं।"

SHIVA RAJARSHI King Shiva of Hastinapur got initiated as Dishaprokshak on the banks of Ganges and commenced the Dishachakraval-tap with series of two day fasts. While observing this austerity he acquired Vibhang inana and started seeing and
ang jnana and started seeing and knowing seven continents and seas. This gave him a delusion that there are only seve continents and seas in this universe (Lok) and nothing beyond. He started preaching this theory to masses.

One Gautam Swami came to Hastinapur city for seeking alms. He heard about Shiva Rajarshi's preaching from people. On his return he went to Bhagavan Mahavir and asked questions to satisfy his curiosity. Bhagavan said—“Gautam ! Shiva Rajarshi has gained Vibhang jnana and his statement that there are only seven continents and seas in this universe (Lok) is wrong. In fact there are innumerable continenti and seas in this universe (Lok).
