। १ । नमो दुर्वाररागादि, - वैरिवार - निवारिणे । अर्हते योगिनाथाय, महावीराय
ने ॥१॥
अर्थ :- अत्यंत कठिनता से दूर किये जा सके ऐसे राग-द्वेषादि शत्रु गण का निवारण करने वाले अर्हन्त, योगियों स्वामी और जगत् के जीवों की रक्षा करने वाले श्री श्रमण भगवान् महावीर को मेरा नमस्कार हो । । १ । । ।१। प्रणम्य सिद्धाद्भुत-योगसम्पदे, श्रीवीरनाथाय, विमुक्तिशालिने । स्वयोग- शास्त्रार्थ - विशेषनिर्णयो, भव्यावबोधाय मया विधास्यते ॥ • सिद्ध अद्भुत योग सम्पदाओं से युक्त एवं रागादि दोषों से विमुक्त श्री महावीर स्वामी को नमस्कार कर के भव्यजीवों को बोध देने हेतु स्वरचित योगशास्त्र का विशेष अर्थों से युक्त विवरण (व्याख्या) प्रस्तुत करूंगा।
अर्थ

आशय :- कलिकालसर्वज्ञ श्रीमद् हेमचन्द्राचार्य इस योगशास्त्र की रचना कर के इसी पर स्वोपज्ञ व्याख्या करने का प्रयोजन मंगलाचरण के साथ बताते हैं- 'स्वयोगशास्त्रार्थ - विशेषनिर्णयो भव्यावबोधाय मया विधास्यते' अर्थात्, मैं अपने द्वारा रचित योगशास्त्र के वास्तविक अर्थ का बोध भव्य जीवों को देने के लिए यह व्याख्या (टीका) लिख रहा हूँ।' ताकि कोई भी व्यक्ति अपनी बुद्धि से इसका मनमाना अर्थ न कर बैठे और जिज्ञासु जनों को न बहका दे। इसी आशय से प्रेरित होकर श्रीहेमचन्द्राचार्य ने अपने ग्रंथ पर स्वयं व्याख्या लिखी है।
व्याख्या:- महावीर - योगशास्त्र के पहले श्लोक में जो 'महावीर' पद है, वह विशेष्य है। महावीर का अर्थ होता
| है - वीरों से भी बढ़कर वीर । युद्ध में हजारों सुभटों को जीत लेने वाला योद्धा वास्तव में वीर नहीं कहलाता। वीर सच्चे अर्थ में वही कहलाता है- 'जो विशेष रूप से कर्मशत्रुओं को नष्ट (पराजित ) करता है । अथवा कर्मों का नाश करके जो तपश्चर्या में वीर्यवान् शक्ति और उत्साह से युक्त हो, वही वीर कहलाता है। लक्षण अथवा निरुक्ति से वीर शब्द की यह परिभाषा होती है। परंतु भगवान् वर्द्धमान तो अन्य वीरों की अपेक्षा भी अधिक वीर थे। भगवान् महावीर के रूप में कैसे प्रसिद्ध हुए? इस विषय में हम उनके जीवन की एक विशेष घटना यहाँ देते हैं
| इन्द्र द्वारा प्रदत्त महावीरपद :
जिस समय शिशु (भगवान्) महावीर का जन्म - महोत्सव मनाया जा रहा था, उस समय (थोड़े समय पूर्व ही आये हुए) इन्द्र के मन में शंका पैदा हुई कि ये लघुकाय शिशु वर्द्धमान अभिषेक के समय शरीर पर डाले जाने वाले जलभार को कैसे सहन करेंगे? शिशु वर्द्धमान ने शरीरबल से आत्मबल बढ़कर है, इस बात को प्रत्यक्ष समझाकर इन्द्र की पूर्वोक्त | शंका को दूर करने की दृष्टि से अपने दाहिने पैर के अंगूठे से सुमेरुपर्वत का ज्यों ही स्पर्श किया, त्यों ही सुमेरुपर्वत का शिखर और भूतल कंपायमान होने लगे, समुद्र भी क्षुब्ध हो उठा; सारा ब्रह्माण्ड आतंकित हो उठा। उसी समय इन्द्र

**Intention:** Kalikalasarvagna Shrimad Hemachandracharya, while composing this Yogashastra, states the purpose of writing his own commentary on it with the mangalacharan - 'Swayogashastraarth - Visheshnirnayoh Bhavyavabodhaaya Maya Vidhasyate', meaning, 'I am writing this commentary (tika) to give the true meaning of my Yogashastra to the worthy beings.' So that no one can interpret it arbitrarily with their own intellect and mislead the inquisitive people. Inspired by this intention, Shri Hemachandracharya has written a commentary on his own work.

**Commentary:** In the first verse of Mahavira - Yogashastra, the word 'Mahavira' is the special. The meaning of Mahavira is - greater than the heroes. A warrior who defeats thousands of soldiers in battle is not truly called a hero. A hero, in the true sense, is one who 'destroys (defeats) the enemies of karma in a special way'. Or, one who is strong and enthusiastic in penance by destroying karma, is called a hero. This is the definition of the word 'veer' from the point of view of characteristics or etymology. But Bhagwan Vardhaman was even more heroic than other heroes. How did Bhagwan become famous as Mahavira? In this regard, we present a special incident from his life here.
