WEAPONS OF EVIL
Of all things, soldiers are instruments of evil, Hated by men. Therefore the religious man (Possessed of Tao) avoids them. The gentleman favours the left in civilian life, But on military occasions favours the right. Soldiers are weapons of evil.
They are not the weapons of the gentleman. When the use of soldiers cannot be helped, The best policy is calm restraint.

अनिष्ट के शस्त्रास्त्र
निक, सबसे बढ़ कर, अनिष्ट के आँजार होते हैं, और लोग उनसे घृणा करते हैं। इसलिए, ताओ से युक्त धार्मिक पुरुष उनसे बचता है। सज्जन असैनिक जीवन में वामपक्ष अर्थात शुभ के लक्षण की ओर झुकता है, लेकिन युद्ध के मौकों पर वह दक्षिणपक्ष अर्थात अशुभ के लक्षण की ओर मुड़ जाता है। सँनिक अनिष्ट के शस्त्र-अस्त्र होते हैं, वे सज्जनों के लिए शस्त्र नहीं हो सकते। जब सैनिकों का उपयोग अनिवार्य हो जाए, तब शांत प्रतिरोध ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ नीति है।
