Chapter 24
THE DREGS AND TUMOURS OF VIRTUE
He who stands on tiptoe does not stand (firm); He who strains his strides does not walk (well); He who reveals himself is not luminous; He who justifies himself is not far-famed; He who boasts of himself is not given credit; He who prides himself is not chief among men. These in the eyes of Tao Are called the dregs and tumours of Virtue, Which are things of disgust. Therefore the man of Tao spurns them.

জাগো ইট নলেঞ্জ ঞ্জীয় রীষ্ট্র
जो अपने पंजों के बल खड़ा होता है, वह दृढ़ता से खड़ा नहीं होता, जो अपने कदमों को तानता है, वह ठीक से नहीं चलता, जो अपने को दिनवाता फिरता है, वह वस्तुतः दीप्तिवान नहीं है, जो स्वयं अपना आँचित्य बताता है, वह विनव्यात नहीं है, जो अपनी डींग ठांकता है, वह श्रेय से वंचित रह जाता है, जो घमंड करता है, वह लोगों का अग्रणी नहीं होता। ताओ की दृष्टि में उन्हें सदगुणों के तलछट और फोड़े कहते हैं। वे जुगुप्सा पैदा करने वाली चीजें हैं। इसलिए ताओ का प्रेमी उनसे दूर ही रहता है।
