Chapter 11 : Sutra 1
The Utility Of Not-Being
The thirty spokes unite the one nave; but it is on the empty space (for the axle), that the use of the wheel depends. Clay is fashioned into vessels; but it is on their empty hollowness, that their use depends. The door and windows are cut out (from the walls) to form an apartment; but it is on the empty space (within), that its use depends. Therefore, what has a (positive) existence serves for the profitable adaptation, and what has not that for (actual) usefulness.

अनस्तित्व की उपयोगिता

पहिए की तीसों तीलियां उसके मध्य भाग में आकर जुड़ जाती है, किंतु पठिए की उपयोगिता धुरी के लिए छोड़ी गई वाली जगह पर निर्भर होती हैं। मिट्टी से घड़े का निर्माण होता है, किंतु उसकी उपयोगिता उसके शून्य खालीपन में निहित हैं। दरवाजे और निवड़कियों को, दीवारों में काट कर प्रकोष्ठ बनाए जाते है, किंतु कमरे की उपयोगिता उसके भीतर के शून्य पर अवलंबित होती हैं। इसलिए, वस्तुओं का विधायक अस्तित्व तो लाभकारी सुविधा देता है, परंतु उनके अनस्तित्व में ही उनकी वास्तविक उपयोगिता है।
