Chapter 18 : Sutra 1
The Decline Of Tao
On the decline of the great Tao, The doctrines of humanity and justice arose. When knowledge and cleverness appeared, Great hypocrisy followed in its wake. When the six relationships no longer lived at peace, There was (praise of) kind parents and filial sons. When a country fell into chaos and misrule, There was praise of loyal ministers.

ताओ का पत
महान ताओ के पतन पर,
मानवता और न्याय के सिद्धांत का उदय हुआ।
और जब ज्ञान और होशियारी का जन्म हुआ,
तब पाखंड भी अपनी पूरी तीव्रता में सक्रिय हो गया ।
जब संबंधों के बीच शांति असंभव हो गई,
तब दयालु माता-पिता और आज्ञाकारी पुत्रों की प्रशंसा शुरू हुई।
और जब देश में कुशासन और अराजकता छा गई,
तब स्वामिभक्त मंत्रियों की प्रशंसा होने लगी।
