Chapter 12 : Sutra 1
The Senses
Colour's five hues from the eyes their sight will take; Music's five notes the ears as deaf can make; The flavours five deprive the mouth of taste; The chariot course, and the wild hunting waste Make mad the mind; and objects rare and strange, sought for, men's conduct will be evil change. Therefore, the sage seeks to satisfy (the craving of) the belly, and not the (insatiable longing of the) eyes. He puts from him the later, and prefers to seek the former.

पंचेंदियां
पंच नंग मनुष्य की आंचवों को अंधा कर जाते हैं, पंच स्वर उसके कानों को बहरा कर जाते हैं, पंच स्वाद उसकी रुचि को नष्ट कर देते हैं, घुड़दाँइ और शिकार उसके मन को पागल कर देते हैं, दुर्लभ ऑर विचित्र पदार्थों की खोज उसके आचरण को अष्ट कर देती हैं। इस कारण संत बहिर नेत्रों की दुष्पूर आकांक्षाओं की तृप्ति नहीं, वरन उस भूख की चिंता करते हैं, जो नाभि के अंतरस्थ केंद्र में निहित हैं। संत एक का निषेध और दूसरे का समर्थन करते हैं।
