Post-positions The case-forms have normalised terminations and furthermore the casemeaning is expressed by post-positions. The post-positions are gaining ascendency in usage. The following post-positions are found in our text. They are found either compounded or uncompounded. :
(i) सहु 2.3.6. ; सहुं 2.11.9.; समाण 4.7.11.; समाणु 1.7.13. ; समाणउ 2.11.3. (Cf. sk. समम् ‘with'); सहिज्जम् 4.24.2.; 4.25.13. (= sk. साहाय्यम् ); सरिसउ 8.12.12. (sk. साशकम् ). These post-positions are used with an instrumental form in the sense of 'with, along with'. as in sk. :
For example, सेण्णे समाणु 8.13.4. ; बहुसेण्ण सरिसर 8.12.12.; सहु सिरिसंघ 2.6.8. ; सडु धुवइ 2.6.11.
सहियउ 2.4.4.; सहिउ 4.5.8. ( = sk. सहित) are also used in the sense of with' e.g. जिणेसरण्हवणे सहियउ 2.4.4.
Compounded; पुत्तबलिसहिज्ज 4.24.2.; णायसहिज्जउ 4.25.13.
(ii) कज्जि 2.2.10.; 4.3.22.; 4.4.3. etc. (= sk. कार्येण ); कज 4.14.13. कारणि 4.14.15. ( = sk. कारणेन ); णिमित्तें 4.10.12.; अत्थि 2.6.9. These are used in the sense of 'for' to express the dative case and are used with genetive case. Examples: महिलहि कब्जि 4.4.3. ; महु कब्जे 4.14.13.; तुह कारणि 4.14.15 ; चुणणणिमित्त (compounded) 4.10.12.; बंदणत्थि ( compounded) 2.6.9. cf. G. काजे, कारणे, माटे, अर्थे.
(iii) भणिवि ( = sk. भणित्वा) 1.11.4.; 5.4.8. — with reference to ' ' on account of 'e.g. विहप्पइभज्जासत्तउ भणिवि 1.11.4.; अक्खयदाणु भणिवि 5.4.8. cf. G. भणी - towards. '
(iv) पासिय 1.4.8. ' belonging to ' ( = sk. पाश्विक ) सुरदं पासिय ( = sk. सुराणा पाश्विका) ' belonging to gods' 1.4.8. cf. G. पासे 'near'.
(v) केरउ-सवक्किहि केरउ 5.2.6. 'of' cf. G. केलं.
तणउ-एयहु तणउ 8.4.19. 'of' cf. G. तणुं. . Both the post-positions are used to show the sense of 'of' and go with the genetive form of a substantive or a pronoun. Both are noter! by Hc. 8.4.422; and function as declinable adjectives.
(vi) अन्ति, अन्तरि, मज्झि, मज्झु, अभंतरि are used in the sense of locative-case post-positions to mean in'. e.g. वर्णति 8.3.5. कूवंतरि 8.2.15.; हट्टभंतरि 8.15.15.; विसयहो मज्झि 1.4.4.; कुगइहि मज्झु 2.1.6. etc. When non-compounded, the post-positions go with a genetive case.
(vii) आसिउ = sk. आश्रित ' dependent on ' 'on account of' : भवासिउ 2.5.4. 'on account of the previous birth'; संबंधासिउ 5.9.6. ' on account of a relation'.
(viii) संकासउ, सण्णिह, सम, जेम, जिह. ' like' are used with genetive: एयहो संकासउ 1.4.10.; धारालिहणहो सण्णिहउ 12.2.1.; जासु सम 2.5.7.; चोरु जेम 4.4.5.; धीयहि सण्णिा 2.10 10. etc.
(ix) मिसेण, छम्में ' on the excuse of ' गहिहि छम्में 2.9.10. ; ण्हवणहो मिसेण 2.4.7.etc.
