उववाइय सुत्तं. सू० ३८
अस्नान, शीत, आतप डांस-मच्छर, स्वेद - पसीना, जल्ल--रज, मल्लमैल, जो सूख कर कठोर बन गया, पंक- पसीने से गीला बना हुआ मैल, इन सभी परितापों से अपने आपको कम या अधिक क्लेश देते हैं, कुछ समय तक अपने आप को क्लेशित कर मृत्यु का समय आने पर शरीर का परित्याग करके वे वाण-व्यन्तर देवलोकों में से किसी देवलोक में देव के रूप में उत्पन्न होते हैं । वहाँ उनकी गति--जाना, वहाँ उनकी स्थिति रहना और वहाँ उनका उपपात - देवरूप से उत्पन्न होना, कहा गया है।
Gautama Bhante! Why do you say that in some cases he is born among the celestial beings, but in some other cases, he is not so born ?
Mahāvīra Gautama! When living beings residing in villages, mines, towns, etc. etc., who are not actuated by a desire to uproot ( exhaust ) karma, but who torture self by M stopping the intake of food and drink, by practising celibacy, by hardship arising out of non-bath, cold, heat, mosquito, · sweat, dust, dirt and mud, for short or for long, who are thus tortured, such ones, dying at a certain point in eternal time, are born in one of the heavens occupied by the Vaṇavyantara gods as celestial beings. They are said to go to these heavens, reside there as so many celestial beings.
गौतम : तेसि णं भंते ! महावीर : गोअमा ! गौतम : अत्थि णं भंते ! ति वा बलेति वा वीरिए इ
महावीर : हंता अस्थि ।
गौतम : ते णं भंते! देवा पर लोगस्सा राहगा ?
महावीर : णो तिण समट्ठे ॥५॥
देवाणं केवइअं कालं ठिई पण्णत्ता ? दसवाससहस्साई ठिई पण्णत्ता ।
तेसिं देवाणं इड्डी वा जुई वा जसे वा पुरिसक्कारपरिक्कमे इ वा ?
