This is a monumental work on the history of the Jain religion by one of the most renowned and erudite of Jain saints dedicated to a Life of Ahinsa in the service of menkind and indeed of all living creatures.
The work is in five parts. Two have already appeared. This is the third part, and the fourth and fifth are under preparation. The first part traces the history from the earliest times (going back to protohistory and mythology) to the Nirvana of Lord Mahavira. The second part is an account of the next one thousand years from the first disciple, and Sudharma Swami, the first head of the order following Mahavira to the 27th Head Devardbi Gani Kshama-Shraman. The third part, the present volume, is concerned with the period from the year 1001 after the Nirvana of Mahavira to the year 1475, some years before the period of the celebrated Acharya Hemchandra. The fourth part will bring the account from nearly Vir Nirvana Samvat 1475 upto the period of Lonka Shah (Veer Nirwana Samvat 1978-2009). The fifth part will bring the account upto the present times, beginning with Lonka Shah.
The work has entailed great and determined effort, and use of wide ranging and diverse source materials, including earlier studies by many famous scholars and Acharyas such as Acharya Hemchandra, author of Trishashthi Shalaka Purush Charitra and Acharya Prabhachandra, author of Prabhavak Charitra.
The exposition with all the merits of deep scholarship is in an easy, lucid style. This should make the publication of wide interest. The volumes describe the bistory of developments including distortions and aberrations,
