सम्बन्धित ग्रंथ के इंडेक्स का कार्य करती हैं तथा सभी विस्तृत घटनावलियों का संक्षेप में उल्लेख करती हैं।' व्याख्या के संदर्भ में अनुगम दो प्रकार का होता है-सूत्र-अनुगम और नियुक्ति-अनुगम। नियुक्तिअनुगम के तीन प्रकार हैं
१. निक्षेपनियुक्ति-अनुगम। २. उपोद्घातनियुक्ति-अनुगम। ३. सूत्रस्पर्शिकनियुक्ति-अनुगम।
शब्द के कई अर्थों में प्रस्तुत प्रसंग में कौन-सा अर्थ प्रासंगिक है, इसका ज्ञान निक्षेपनियुक्तिअनुगम से होता है। उपोद्घातनियुक्ति-अनुगम में छब्बीस प्रकार से शब्द या विषय की मीमांसा की जाती है। तत्पश्चात् सूत्रस्पर्शिकनियुक्ति-अनुगम के द्वारा नियुक्तिकार सूत्रगत शब्दों की व्याख्या प्रस्तुत करते हैं। नियुक्तिकार मूलग्रंथ के प्रत्येक शब्द की व्याख्या न करके केवल विशेष शब्दों की ही व्याख्या प्रस्तुत करते
हैं।
भाष्य-साहित्य में व्याख्या के तीन प्रकार बताए गए हैं, उनमें नियुक्ति का दूसरा स्थान है। प्रथम व्याख्या में शिष्य को केवल सूत्र का अर्थ कराया जाता है, दूसरी व्याख्या में नियुक्ति के साथ सूत्र की व्याख्या की जाती है तथा तीसरी व्याख्या में निरवशेष-सर्वांगीण व्याख्या की जाती है। यहां 'निज्जुत्तिमीसओ' का दूसरा अर्थ यह भी संभव है कि दूसरी व्याख्या में शिष्य को सूत्रगत अर्थ का अध्ययन कराया जाता है, जिसे अर्थागम कहा जाता है। नियुक्ति का प्रयोजन
