बलवन्तः समुवृत्तास्तेऽन्ये लचमणनन्दनाः । क्रोधादुत्पतितुं शक्ता वैदेहीनन्दनौ यतः ॥२८॥ ततोऽष्टाभिः सुकन्याभिस्तद्भातृबलमुद्धतम् । मन्त्रैरिव शमं नीतं भुजङ्गमकुलं चलम् ॥२६॥ प्रशान्ति भ्रातरो यात तद्भातृभ्यां समं ननु । किमाभ्यां क्रियते कार्य कन्याभ्यामधुना शुभाः ॥३०॥ स्वभावाद्वनिता जिह्मा विशेषादन्यचेतसः । ततः सुहृदयस्तासामर्थ को विकृति भजेत् ॥३॥ अपि निर्जितदेवीभ्यामेताभ्यां नास्ति कारणम् । अस्माकं चेस्प्रियं कत्तु "निवर्तध्वमितो मनः ॥३२॥ एवमष्टकुमाराणां वचनैः प्रग्रहैरिव । तुरङ्गमबलं वृन्दं भ्रातृणां स्थापितं वशे ॥३३॥ वृत्तौ यत्र सुकन्याभ्यां वैदेहीतनुसम्भवौ । प्रदेशे तत्र संवृत्तस्तुमुलस्तूर्यनिस्वनः ॥३४॥ वंशाः सकाहलाः शङ्खा भम्भोभेर्यः सझझराः । मनःश्रोत्रहरं नेदुाप्त दूरदिगन्तराः ॥३५॥ स्वायंवरी समालोक्य विभूति लचमणात्मजाः। शुशुचुर्वीचय देवेन्द्रीमिव क्षुद्र्धयः सुराः ॥३६॥ नारायणस्य पुत्राः स्मो यतिकान्तिपरिच्छदाः । नवयौवनसम्पन्नाः सुसहाया बलोत्कटाः ॥३७॥ गुणेन केन हीनाः स्म यदेकमपि नो जनम् । परित्यज्य वृत्तावेतौ कन्याभ्यां जानकीसुतौ ॥३८॥ अथवा विस्मयः कोऽत्र किमपीदं जगद्गतम् । कर्मवैचित्र्ययोगेन विचित्रं यच्चराचरम् ॥३६॥ प्रागेव यदवाप्तव्यं येन यत्र यथा यतः । तत्परिप्राप्यतेऽवश्यं तेन तत्र तथा ततः ॥४०॥

वहाँ उन आठके सिवाय बलवान तथा उत्कट चेष्टाके धारक जो लक्ष्मणके अन्य पुत्र थे वे क्रोधवश लवण और अंकुशकी ओर झपटनेके लिए तत्पर हो गये परन्तु उन सुन्दर कन्याओंको लक्ष्यकर उद्धत चेष्टा दिखानेवाली भाइयोंकी उस सेनाको पूर्वोक्त आठ प्रमुख वीरोंने उस प्रकार ... शान्त कर दिया जिस प्रकारकी मन्त्र चञ्चल सों के समूहको शान्त कर देते हैं ॥२८-२६॥ उन . आठ भाइयोंने अन्य भाइयोंको समझाते हुए कहा कि 'भाइयो ! तुम सब उन दोनों भाइयोंके - साथ शान्तिको प्राप्त होओ। हे भद्र जनो! अब इन दोनों कन्याओंसे क्या कार्य किया जाना : है ? स्त्रियाँ स्वभावसे ही कुटिल हैं फिर जिनका चित्त दूसरे पुरुषमें लग रहा है उनका तो कहना ही क्या है ? इसलिए ऐसा कौन उत्तम हृदयका धारक है जो उनके लिए विकारको प्राप्त हो। भले ही इन कन्याओंने देवियोंको जीत लिया हो फिर भी इनसे हम लोगोंको क्या प्रयोजन है ? इसलिए यदि अपना कल्याण करना चाहते हो तो इनकी ओरसे मनको लौटाओ' ॥३०-३२॥ इस तरह उन आठ कुमारोंके वचनोंसे भाइयोंका वह समूह उस प्रकार वशीभूत हो गया जिस प्रकार कि लगामोंसे घोड़ोंका समूह वशीभूत हो जाता है ॥३३॥ जिस स्थानमें उन उत्तम कन्याओंके द्वारा सीताके पुत्र वरे गये थे वहाँ बाजांका तुमुलशब्द होने लगा ॥३४॥ बहुत दूर तक दिग-दिगन्तको व्याप्त करनेवाले, बाँसुरी, काहला, शंख, भंभा, भेरी तथा झझर आदि बाजे मन और कानोंको हरण करने वाले मनोहर शब्द करने लगे ॥३५॥ जिस प्रकार इन्द्रकी विभूति देख क्षुद्र ऋद्धिके धारक देव शोकको प्राप्त हो जाते हैं उसी प्रकार स्वयंवरको विभूति देख लक्ष्मणके पुत्र क्षोभको प्राप्त हो गये ॥३६॥ वे सोचने लगे कि हम नारायणके पुत्र हैं, दीप्ति और कान्तिसे युक्त हैं, नवयौवनसे सम्पन्न हैं, उत्तम सहायकोंसे युक्त हैं तथा बलसे प्रचण्ड हैं ।१३७।। हम लोग किस गुणमें हीन हैं कि जिससे हम लोगोंमेंसे किसी एकको भी इन कन्याओंने नहीं वरा किन्तु उसके विपरीत हम सबको छोड़ जानकीके पुत्रोंको वरा ॥३८॥ अथवा इसमें आश्चर्य ही क्या है ? जगत्की ऐसी ही विचित्र चेष्टा है, कर्मोकी विचित्रताके योगसे यह चराचर विश्व विचित्र ही जान पड़ता है ॥३६॥ जिसे जहाँ जिस प्रकार जिस कारणसे जो वस्तु पहले ही प्राप्त करने योग्य होती है उसे वहाँ उसी प्रकार उसी कारणसे वही वस्तु अवश्य प्राप्त होती है ॥४०॥

Those other sons of Lakshmana, who were strong and full of vigor, were ready to attack Lavana and Ankusha out of anger, because they were the sons of Vaidehi. ||28|| Then, those eight valiant brothers, who were eager to show off their prowess, were calmed by those beautiful maidens, just as a group of snakes is calmed by mantras. ||26|| Those eight brothers, along with the other brothers, said, "Brothers, be at peace. What is to be done with these two auspicious maidens now? Women are naturally deceitful, and those whose minds are attached to other men are even more so. So, who is the noble-hearted one who would desire to be afflicted by their affections? Even though these maidens have conquered the goddesses, what use are they to us? Therefore, if you wish your own well-being, turn your minds away from them." ||30-32|| Thus, by the words of those eight Kumaras, the group of brothers was subdued, just as a group of horses is subdued by reins. ||33|| At the place where those excellent maidens had chosen the sons of Sita, a tumultuous sound of music arose. ||34|| The flutes, conch shells, drums, cymbals, and kettledrums, which filled the entire horizon, made a beautiful sound that captivated the minds and ears. ||35|| Just as the lesser gods are filled with sorrow when they see the glory of Indra, so too were the sons of Lakshmana filled with distress when they saw the glory of the Swayamvara. ||36|| They thought, "We are the sons of Narayana, adorned with brilliance and radiance, endowed with youthful vigor, possessing excellent helpers, and powerful. ||37|| What quality are we lacking that these maidens did not choose any of us, but instead chose the sons of Janaki, abandoning us all?" ||38|| Or, what is the wonder in this? This is the way of the world. Due to the strange workings of karma, this world of moving and unmoving beings is strange indeed. ||39|| Whatever is destined to be obtained by whom, where, how, and why, is surely obtained by him there, in that way, and for that reason. ||40||
