________________ पद्मपुराणे इह प्रद्युम्नशाम्बौ तौ यावेतौ मधुकैटभौ । द्वारिकायां समुत्पन्नौ पुत्रौ कृष्णस्य भारते ॥२७॥ पष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि चत्वारि च ततः परम् । रामायणस्य विज्ञेयमन्तरं भारतस्य च ॥२८॥ अरिष्टनेमिनाथस्य तीर्थ नाकादिह च्युतः । मधुबभूव रुक्मिण्यां वासुदेवस्य नन्दनः ॥२६॥ मगधाधिपतिः प्राह नाथ वागमृतस्य ते । अतृप्तिमुपगच्छामि धनस्येव धनेश्वरः ॥३०॥ तावन्मधोः सुरेन्द्रस्य चरितं विनिगद्यताम् । भगवन् श्रोतुमिच्छामि प्रसादः क्रियतां मम ॥३१॥ कैटभस्य च तद्रातुरवधानपरायण । गणेन्द्र चरितं ब्रहि सर्व हि विदितं तव ॥३२॥ आसीदन्यभवे तेन किं कृतं प्रकृतं भवेत् । कथं वा त्रिजगच्छ्रेष्ठा लब्धा बोधिः सुदुर्लभा ॥३३॥ क्रमवृत्तिरियं वाणी तावकी धीश्च मामिका । उत्सुकं च परं चित्तमहो युक्तमनुक्रमात् ॥३४॥ गण्याह मगधाभिख्ये देशेऽस्मिन्सर्वसस्यके । चातुर्वर्ण्यप्रमुदिते धर्मकामार्थसंयुते ॥३५॥ चारुचैत्यालयाकीणे पुरमामाकरराऽऽचिते । नाद्यानमहारम्ये साधुसङ्घसमाकुले ॥३६॥ राजा नित्योदितो नाम तत्र कालेऽभवन्महान् । शालिग्रामोऽस्ति तत्रैव देशे ग्रामः पुरोपमः ॥३७॥ ब्राह्मणः सोमदेवोऽत्र भार्या तस्याग्निलेत्यभूत् । विज्ञेयौ तनयौ तस्या वह्निमारुतभूतिकौ ॥३८॥ षटकर्मविधिसम्पन्नौ वेदशास्त्रविशारदौ । अस्मत्तः कोऽपरोऽस्तीति नित्यं पण्डितमानिनौ ॥३॥ अभिमानमहादाहसञ्जातोद्धतविभ्रमौ । भोग एव सदा सेव्य इति धर्मपराङ्मुखौ ॥४०॥ और कैटभके जीव भरतक्षेत्रकी द्वारिका नगरीमें महाराज श्रीकृष्णके प्रद्युम्न तथा शाम्ब नामके पुत्र हुए ॥२६-२७॥ इस तरह रामायण और महाभारतका अन्तर कुछ अधिक चौंसठ हजार वर्ष जानना चाहिए ॥२८॥ अरिष्टनेमि तीर्थकरके तीर्थ में मधुका जीव स्वर्गसे च्युत होकर इसी भरत क्षेत्रमें श्रीकृष्णकी रुक्मिणी नामक स्त्रीसे प्रद्युम्न नामका पुत्र हुआ ॥२६॥ यह सुनकर राजा श्रेणिक ने गौतम स्वामीसे कहा कि हे नाथ ! जिस प्रकार धनवान् मनुष्य धनके विषयमें तृप्तिको प्राप्त नहीं होता है उसी प्रकार मैं भी आपके वचन रूपी अमृतके विषयमें तृप्तिको प्राप्त नहीं हो रहा हूँ ॥३०।। हे भगवन् ! आप मुझे अच्युतेन्द्र मधुका पूरा चरित्र कहिए मैं सुननेकी इच्छा करता हूँ, मुझपर प्रसन्नता कीजिए ॥३१॥ इसी प्रकार हे ध्यानमें तत्पर गणराज! मधुके भाई कैदभका भी पूर्ण चरित कहिए क्योंकि आपको वह अच्छी तरह विदित है ॥३२॥ उसने पूर्वभवमें कौन सा उत्तम कार्य किया था तथा तीनों जगत्में श्रेष्ठ अतिशय दुर्लभ रत्नत्रयकी प्राप्ति उसे किस प्रकार हुई थी ? ॥३३॥ हे भगवन् ! आपकी यह वाणी क्रम-क्रमसे प्रकट होती है, और मेरी बुद्धि भी क्रम-क्रमसे पदार्थको ग्रहण करती है तथा मेरा चित्त भी अनुक्रमसे अत्यन्त उत्सुक हो रहा है इस तरह सब प्रकरण उचित ही जान पड़ता है ॥३४॥ तदनन्तर गौतम गणधर कहने लगे कि जो सर्व प्रकारके धान्यसे सम्पन्न है, जहाँ चारों वर्णके लोग अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हैं, जो धर्म, अर्थ और कामसे सहित है, सुन्दर-सुन्दर चैत्यालयोंसे युक्त है, पुर ग्राम तथा खानों आदिसे व्याप्त है, नदियों और बाग-बगीचोंसे अत्यन्त सुन्दर है, मुनियों के संघसे युक्त है ऐसे इस मगध नामक देशमें उस समय नित्योदित नामका बड़ा राजा था। उसी देशमें नगरकी समता करनेवाला एक शालिग्राम नामका गाँव था ॥३५-३७॥ उस ग्राममें एक सोमदेव नामका ब्राह्मण था । अग्निला उसकी स्त्री थी और उन दोनोंके अग्निभूति तथा वायुभूति नामके दो पुत्र थे ।।३८॥ वे दोनों ही पुत्र सन्ध्या-वन्दनादि षट् कर्मोकी विधिमें निपुण, वेद-शास्त्रके पारङ्गत, और 'हमसे बढ़ कर दूसरा कोन है' इस प्रकार पाण्डित्यके अभिमानमें चूर थे ॥३६॥ अभिमान रूपी महादाहके कारण जिन्हें अत्यधिक उन्माद उत्पन्न हुआ था ऐसे वे दोनों भाई ‘सदा भोग ही सेवन करने योग्य हैं। यह सोच कर धमसे विमुख रहते थे ॥४०॥ १. अग्निभूतिवायुभूतिनामानौ । ..
