पद्मपुराणे
पादातसुमहावृवं मत्तवारणभीषणम् । प्रविश्य मधुकान्तारं को नि:कामति जीवितः ॥४३॥ एवमुक्तं समाकर्ण्य कृतान्तकुटिलोऽवदत् । यूयं भीताः किमित्येवं त्यक्त्वा मानसमुन्नतिम् ॥४४॥ अमोघेन किलाऽऽरूढो गवं शूलेन यद्यपि । हन्तुं तथापि तं शक्तो मधुं शत्रुध्नसुन्दरः ॥४५॥ करेण बलवान् दन्ती पातयेद्धरणीरुहान् । प्रक्षरद्दानधारोऽपि सिंहेन तु निपात्यते ॥४६॥ लचमीप्रतापसम्पन्नः सत्ववान् बलवान् बुधः । सुपहायश्च शत्रुघ्नः शत्रुघ्नो जायते ध्रुवम् ॥४७॥ अथ मन्त्रिजनाऽऽदेशान् मथुरानगरी गताः । प्रत्यावृत्य चरा वात्ता वदन्ति स्म यथाविधि ॥४८॥ शृणु देवाऽस्ति पूर्वस्यां मथुरा नगरी दिशि । उद्यानं रम्यमत्यन्तं राजलोकसमावृतम् ॥१६॥ मध्येऽमरकुरोर्यद्वत्कुबेरच्छदसंज्ञितम् । इच्छापूरणसम्पन्नं विपुलं राजतेतराम् ॥५०॥ जयन्त्यात्र महादेव्या सहितस्याद्य वर्तते । वारीगतगजस्येव स्पर्शवश्यस्य भूभृतः ।।५१॥ कामिनी दिवसः षष्ठस्त्यक्ताशेषान्यकर्मणः । महासुस्थाभिमानस्य प्रमादवशवर्तिनः ॥५२॥ प्रतिज्ञा तव नो वेद नागम कामवश्यधीः । बुधरुपेक्षितो मोहात्स भिपग्भिः सरोगवत् ॥५३॥ प्रस्तावे यदि नैतस्मिन् मथुराऽध्यास्यते ततः । अन्य पुंवाहिनीवा हैदुःसहः स्यान्मधूदधिः ॥५४॥
वचनं तत्समाकर्ण्य शत्रुध्नः क्रमकोविदः । ययौ शतसहस्रेण ययूनां मथुरां पुरीम् ।।५५।। हैं तथा जो शस्त्ररूपी मगरमच्छोंसे व्याप्त है ऐसे मधुरूपी सागरको यह भुजाओंसे कैसे तैरना चाहता है ? ॥४२॥ जो पैदल सैनिक रूपी बड़े-बड़े वृक्षोंसे युक्त तथा मदोन्मत्त हाथियोंसे भयंकर है ऐसे मधुरूपी वनमें प्रवेश कर कौन पुरुष जीवित निकलता है ? ॥४६॥ इस प्रकार मन्त्रियोंका कहा सुनकर कृतान्तवक्त्र सेनापतिने कहा कि तुम लोग अभिमानको छोड़कर इस तरह भयभीत क्यों हो रहे हो ? ॥४४॥ यद्यपि मधु, अमोव शूलके कारण गर्व पर आरूढ है-अहंकार कर रहा है तथापि शत्रुघ्न से मारनेके लिए समर्थ हैं ।।४५॥ जिसके मदको धारा झर रही है ऐसा बलवान् हाथी यद्यपि अपनी सूंडसे वृक्षोंको गिरा देता है तथापि वह सिंहके द्वारा मारा जाता है ।।४६।। यतश्च शत्रुघ्न लक्ष्मी और प्रतापसे सहित है, धैर्यवान है, बलवान् है, बुद्धिमान् है, और उत्तम सहायकोंसे युक्त है इसलिए अवश्य ही शत्रुको नष्ट करनेवाला होगा ॥४७॥
अथानन्तर मन्त्रिजनोंके आदेशसे जो गुप्तचर मथुरा नगरी गये थे उन्होंने लौटकर विधिपूर्वक यह समाचार कहा कि हे देव ! सुनिये, यहाँसे उत्तर दिशामें मथरा नगरी है। वहाँ नगरके बाहर राजलोकसे घिरा हआ एक अत्यन्त सुन्दर उद्यान है॥४८-४६।। सो जिस प्रकार देवकुरुके मध्यमें इच्छाओंको पूर्ण करनेवाला कुबेरच्छन्द नामका विशाल उपवन सुशोभित है उसी प्रकार वहाँ वह उद्यान सुशोभित है ।।५०।। अपनी जयन्ती नामक महादेवीके साथ राजा मधु इसी उद्यानमें निवास कर रहा है। जिस प्रकार हथिनीके वशमें हुआ हाथी बन्धनमें पड़ जाता है उसी प्रकार राजा मधु भी महादेवीके वशमें हुआ बन्धनमें पड़ा है ॥५१॥ वह राजा अत्यन्त कामी है, उसने अन्य सब काम छोड़ दिये हैं वह महा अभिमानी है तथा प्रमादके वशीभत है। उसे उद्यानमें रहते हुए आज छठवाँ दिन है ।।५२॥ जिसकी बुद्धि कामके वशीभूत है ऐसा वह मधु राजा, न तो तुम्हारी प्रतिज्ञाको जानता है और न तुम्हारे आगमनका ही उसे पता है। जिस प्रकार वैद्य किसी रोगीकी उपेक्षा कर देते हैं उसी प्रकार मोहकी प्रबलतासे विद्वानोंने भी उसकी उपेक्षा कर दी है ॥५३॥ यदि इस समय मथुरापर अधिकार नहीं किया जाता है तो फिर वह मधुरूपी सागर अन्य पुरुषोंकी सेनारूपी नदियों के प्रवाहसे दुःसह हो जायगा-उसका जीतना कठिन हो जायगा ॥५४॥ गुप्तचरोंके यह वचन सुनकर क्रमके जानने में निपुण शत्रुघ्न एक लाख घोड़ा लेकर मथुराकी ओर चला ॥५५॥

"Just as the garden of Kubera, called Kubera-chchanda, is situated in the middle of the divine forest, and is filled with the fulfillment of desires, so too is this garden." (50)
"King Madhu resides in this garden with his queen, Jayanti. Just as an elephant is subdued by a female elephant, so too is Madhu subdued by his queen." (51)
"He is very lustful, he has abandoned all other duties, he is very proud, and he is under the influence of delusion. Today is the sixth day since he has been staying in the garden." (52)
"Madhu, whose mind is under the control of lust, does not know of your vow, nor does he know of your arrival. Just as a physician neglects a patient, so too have the wise neglected him because of the strength of his delusion." (53)
"If we do not conquer Mathura now, then the ocean of Madhu will become unbearable due to the flow of rivers, which are the armies of other men. It will be difficult to conquer him." (54)
Hearing these words, Shatrughna, who was skilled in strategy, set out for Mathura with an army of one hundred thousand horses. (55)
