प्रथमं पर्व
बुधपङ्क्तिक्रमायात चरितं रामगोचरम् । भक्त्या प्रणोदिता बुद्धिः प्रष्टुं मम समुद्यता ॥२१॥ विशिष्टचिन्तयायातं यच्च श्रेयः क्षणान्महत् । तेनैव रक्षिता याता चारुतां मम भारती ॥२२॥ व्यक्ताकारादिवर्णा वाग् लम्भिता या न सत्कथाम् । सा तस्य निष्फला जन्तोः पापादानाय केवलम् ।।२३।। वृद्धिं ब्रजति विज्ञानं यशश्चरति निर्मलम् । प्रयाति दुरितं दूरं महापुरुषकीर्तनात् ॥२४॥ अल्पकालमिदं जन्तोः शरीरं रोगनिर्भरम् । यशस्तु सत्कथाजन्म यावच्चन्द्रार्कतारकम् ॥२५॥ तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन पुरुषेणात्मवेदिना । शरीरं स्थास्नु कर्त्तव्यं महापुरुषकीर्तनम् ॥२६॥ लोकद्वयफलं तेन लब्धं भवति जन्तुना । यो विधत्ते कथा रम्यां सज्जनानन्ददायिनीम् ॥२७॥ सत्कथाश्रवणौ यौ च श्रवगौ तौ मतौ मम । अन्यौ विदूषकस्येव श्रवणाकारधारिणौ ॥२८॥ सच्चेष्टावर्णना वर्णा घूर्णन्ते यत्र मूर्धनि । अयं मूर्धाऽन्यमूर्द्धा तु नालिकेरकरङ्कवत् ।।२९।।। सत्कीर्तनसुधास्वादसक्तं च रसनं स्मृतम् । अन्यच्च दुर्वचोधारं कृपाणदुहितुः फलम् ॥३०॥ श्रेष्ठावोष्ठौ च तावेव यौ सुकीर्तनवर्तिनौ । न शम्बूकास्यसंभुक्तजलौकापृष्ठसंनिभौ ॥३१॥ दन्तास्त एव ये शान्तकथासंगमरजिताः । शेषाः सश्लेष्मनिर्वाणद्वारबन्धाय केवलम् ॥३२॥ मुखं श्रेयःपरिप्राप्तेर्मुखं मुख्यकथारतम् । अन्यत्तु मलसंपूर्ण दन्तकीटाकुलं विलम् ॥३३॥
मनुष्य सुखपूर्वक देख लेते हैं और सुईके अग्रभागसे बिदारे हुए मणिमें सूत अनायास ही प्रवेश कर लेता है ।।२०।। रामचन्द्रजीका जो चरित्र विद्वानोंकी परम्परा से चला आ रहा है उसे पूछनेके लिए मेरी बुद्धि भक्तिसे प्रेरित होकर ही उद्यत हुई है ॥२१॥ विशिष्ट पुरुषोंके चिन्तवनसे तत्काल जो महान् पुण्य प्राप्त होता है उसीके द्वारा रक्षित होकर मेरी वाणी सुन्दरताको प्राप्त हुई है ।।२२।। जिस पुरुषकी वाणी में अकार आदि अक्षर तो व्यक्त है पर जो सत्पुरुषोंकी कथाको प्राप्त नहीं करायी गयी है उसकी वह वाणी निष्फल है और केवल पाप-संचयका ही कारण है ॥२३॥ महापुरुषोंका कीर्तन करनेसे विज्ञान वृद्धिको प्राप्त होता है, निर्मल यश फैलता है और पाप दूर चला जाता है ॥२४॥
. जीवोंका यह शरीर रोगोंसे भरा हुआ है तथा अल्प काल तक ही ठहरनेवाला है परन्तु सत्पुरुषोंकी कथासे जो यश उत्पन्न होता है वह जबतक सूर्य, चन्द्रमा और तारे रहेंगे तबतक रहता है ।।२५।। इसलिए आत्मज्ञानी पुरुषको सब प्रकारका प्रयत्न कर महापुरुषोंके कीर्तनसे अपना शरीर स्थायी बनाना चाहिए अर्थात् यश प्राप्त करना चाहिए ।।२६।। जो मनुष्य सज्जनोंको आनन्द देनेवाली मनोहारिणी कथा करता है वह दोनों लोकोंका फल प्राप्त कर लेता है ।।२७।। मनुष्यके जो कान सत्पुरुषोंकी कथाका श्रवण करते हैं मैं उन्हें ही कान मानता हूँ बाकी तो विदूषकके कानोंके समान केवल कानोंका आकार ही धारण करते हैं ॥२८॥ सत्पुरुषोंकी चेष्टाको वर्णन करनेवाले वर्ण-अक्षर जिस मस्तकमें घूमते हैं वही वास्तव में मस्तक है बाकी तो नारियलके करंक--कड़े आवरणके समान हैं ।।२९॥ जो जिह्वा सत्पुरुषोंके कीर्तन रूपी अमृतका आस्वाद लेने में लीन है मैं उन्हें ही जिह्वा मानता हूँ बाकी तो दुर्वचनोंको कहनेवाली छुरीका मानो फलक हो है ॥३०॥ श्रेष्ठ ओंठ वे ही हैं जो कि सत्पुरुषोंका कीर्तन करनेमें लगे रहते हैं बाकी तो शम्बूक नामक जन्तुके मुखसे भुक्त जोंकके पृष्ठके समान ही हैं ॥३१॥ दाँत वही हैं जो कि शान्त पुरुषोंकी कथाके समागमसे सदा रंजित रहते हैं-उसीमें लगे रहते हैं बाकी तो कफ निकलनेके द्वारको रोकनेवाले मानो आवरण ही हैं ॥३२।। मुख वही है जो कल्याणकी प्राप्तिका प्रमुख कारण है और श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंकी कथा कहने में सदा अनुरक्त रहता है बाकी तो मलसे भरा एवं दन्तरूपी कीड़ोंसे

I consider those ears to be ears that listen to the stories of virtuous men, the others are like the ears of a jester, only having the shape of ears. ||28||

The letters that revolve in the head where the description of the actions of virtuous men is narrated, that is the real head, the others are like the hard outer shell of a coconut. ||29||

The tongue that is engrossed in savoring the nectar of the chanting of virtuous men, I consider that to be the tongue, the others are like the blade of a knife that speaks harsh words. ||30||

The best lips are those that are engaged in chanting the glories of virtuous men, the others are like the back of a leech that has been eaten from the mouth of a creature called Shambuka. ||31||

The teeth that are always stained with the association of the stories of peaceful men, those are the real teeth, the others are like coverings that only serve to block the exit of phlegm. ||32||

The mouth that is the main cause of attaining good fortune and is always engaged in telling the stories of great men, that is the real mouth, the others are filled with dirt and infested with tooth-like insects. ||33||
