same year, records that at that time the chief minister was Āśuka; it would mean that Săntuk had retired. The king had an additional title of Siddhacakravartin.
The provenance of certain colophons and inscriptions shows that he must have held sway over large portions of Madhya Pradesh and Rājasthān, besides Gujarāta, Kathiawar and Cutch.
His achievements : The main event during the early part of his reign was an attack on Anahilla pura by Naravarman, the king of Mālava, when Jayasinha had been on a pilgrimage to Somanath with his mother Mayanalla. So Sampatakara or Santu who was in charge of the capital had to make peace with the invader by giving Jayasimha's merit of pilgrimage to Somanātha. When Jayasimha returned he resolved to revenge this insult by waging war against Mālava. From the victory in this war it appears Jayasimha bore the titles of sovereign ruler 'Mahārājadhiraja Parameśvara '3 and also assumed the title of 'Tribhuvanaganda.'4 Merutunga indicates that one of the most important acts of the queen-mother Mayaņalladevi on the occasion of the pilgrimage was the abolition of the tax at Bāhuloda, which yielded seventy-two lacs to the royal treasury.5
Next war of Jayasimha was against the ruler of Surāsýra. Hemacandra in his Siddha-hema-vyakaraṇa refers to the victory over Surāșțra (Ajayat Siddhah Saurastran). A detailed description of this account is found in the Kirti-kaumudi, in the Purātana Prabandha-sangraha and Prabandha-cintamaại. The Kirti-kaumudi states that Jayasimha crushed the very powerful Khergära of Surāştra in the battle as a lion kills an elephant.? The Vividhatirtha-kalpa also gives the name as Khengāraräya,8 and so does the Puratana Prabandha-sangraha.9 The Prabandha-cintamani, however, refers to him by
