hence should not be eaten. They have a general plant nature consisting of many living cells. The so-called non-violence approach lends support to them. However, the early canons like Mūlācāra 6o and Acārānga have indirectly pointed out their eatability on the condition of their de-livening process by cooking, heating, cutting, ripening etc. All canonical scholars are agreed to their non-eatability on raw basis. Jain, RK61 has supported this point on health grounds. When these materials came under complete non-eatability status-is worth looking into. In addition, Jaina scholars of later date have pointed time limits for eating certain denatured materials62. Time limits of cereal powders, curd and milk, ghee and many other food materials have also been pointed out. This is scientifically correct. A critical examination regarding non-eatables is necessary63
