the title 'Kalpalatä'. Besides the file cheia of Amara Candra, we also have the कविकल्पलता of Vinayacandra Suri, the कविकल्पलता of Devasena, the कल्पलता Ambāprasada, and the occafa of our anonymous author, and so on. Incidentally we may also add that the work of Amara Candra is also known as faften and we also have one fafte attributed to Jayamangalāchārya.
Thus, the similarity in name in our present context should not misguide us; the present work has only some similarity with the work of Amara Candra.
Kavikalpalată of Deveśvara
One very old printed edition of the work of Deveśvara, the one that I have consulted, is the one edited by Rāmagopāla Kaviratna Bhattācārya and is published by him from Calcutta in 1900. De refers to this edition28. There is not a word about how Bhattācārya edited and what mss. he had made use of. The editor, following Deveśvara's own words in 1.1.229, states that the author is the son of Vāgbhata and the Mahāmātya of Mālavādhāśa. De is right to remark that we do not know who this Mālavādhīša is 30. The editor gives no other information. He however writes rather eulogistically, when he states -
"If even novices were to (read through and) analyse the work, just with a little effort, poetic instinct will arise in them. What then to talk of scholars"31?
The work is in four stabakas and in 4, 5, 6 and 7 Kusumas respectively; the total Kusumas or Stabakas come to 2232. Each sub-section is given a suitable title, as follows:
