Introduction
This Ms. seems to have been copied from a prototype resembling, or belonging to, the tradition of the P Ms, which did not contain the marginal notes. The quality of the paper and the calligraphy indicates that it might have been copied not more than a century or so back, with the scribal errors of ommission and commission preserved in tact. But the copyist has recorded neither his own name nor the date of copying from the proptetype which definitely recorded the date as V. Sam. 1255.
The Ms. is written in black ink. The scribe is fairly accurate in his copying, though he often confounds 'Ca' with Va', 'Ba' with 'Bha', the Avagraha sign with
Bha', the Avagraha sign with 'i' 'ye' with 'Hā', 'Ya' with 'Pa', Ija' with 'Dya', 'Ta' with "Tha' with 'Cha' or "Tha', and commits more mistakes of his own consequently. He uses the then popular Khadi-mātrā style, and never the Padi-mātrā one though it is evidently a copy of a prototype utilizing the latter style due to which new mistakes have been committed by the copyist scribe of this Ms. Some other mistakes are committed by the scribe due to dropping of a few syllables of the words. A few mistakes have been noticed in the footnotes as variants for the benefit of the scholars interested in this aspect of textual criticism. He has also corrected some of the saśrtis of both P and the V Mss., while retaining many others in tact.
7. The Ujambai Upasraya Bhandara Ms. (the U Ms.) : This is a Paper Ms. belonging to the Ujambai Upashraya Bhandara, Ahmedabad, No. U/350/1, and is at present preserved (No. 17901) in the Manuscript section of the L.D. Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad. The details of this Ms. are as follows :
