Lastly the literary style of the Puhaicamdacaria is such that it cannot fail to invite our attention. In numerous descriptive passages it is highly ornate and full of Ślesas and various other figures of speech. Säntisuri convinces us about his ability to handle the Kavya diction. He has secured a place among the later Jaina narrative writers and the Campükāras who kept alive the slylistic traditions of the Sanskrit and Prakrit prose-Kavyas with diminishing esthetic value.
The Samketa gloss of Ratnaprabhasüri, given at the foot of the printed text is of great value as it explains most of the difficult words and passages.
We are grateful to Pandit Amratlal Bhojak for writing a learned and informative introduction which touches upon many of the important aspects of the text. A detailed, descriptive Table of Contents and numerous appendices too prepared by him certainly add to the usefulness of the present edition. Even in the editing of the text he had assisted Muni Ramnikvijayji substantially.
Almost at the last moment when the book was ready for publication, it was decided to add a glossary of Desya and rare words of the text. We thank Prof. Dr. R. N. Shriyan, Head of the Department of Saskrit and Prakrit, B. M. S. College for Women, Bangalore, for complying with our request and taking special trouble to prepare the Index at a very short notice. The Index incorporates much of the useful material from the Samketa. The readers may generously overlook the slight disorder in placing the Index after the Errata.
It is earnestly hoped that this edition of a significant work of Santisuri, a worthy contribution of the Late Muni Ramnikvijayaji to the Prakrit scholarship, will receive the attention it deserves.
