________________ 342 A SOURCE-BOOK IN JAINA PHILOSOPHY In the third stage there is a slight modifications in the classification of the types of knowledge. This classification distinguishes the matijñāna (sense-experience) into two types as pratyakşa and paroksa. This is considered to be (a) due to sense-organs and (b) due to quasi-sense organs (no-indriya). We give below the classifications of (a) the sense organs and (b) due to quasi-sense organs as discussed. According to Nandi sutra,1 the gist of third stage of knowledge is as following: JÑANA Abinibodh ka Śruta Pratyaksa Indriya Pratyakṣa 1 1. Śrotrendriya pratyakṣa 2. Cakṣurindriya pratyakṣa 3. Kevala Jain Education International Parokşa Śrutniḥśṛta Aśrutaniḥśṛta 1 I Avagraha Tha Avaya Dharaṇā Autpā- Vaina- Kar- Pāriņamiki tiki yiki maja Buddhi Śruta Arthāva graha Vyañjanavagraha The analysis of the theory of knowledge as presented in the three stages gives a picture of knowledge as developed from first to the third stage and graduality imply metaphysical consideration.
