vāyangasūtra is 72000 padas - and 144000 padas respectively, According to the Digambara scriptures, the extent of the Sthanangasūtra and the Samaväyängasūtra is 42000 padas and 164000 padas respectively. But the extent of the Sthânăngasūtra and the Samavayāngasutra as we have them to-day is 3700 ślokas3 and 1667 ślokas only respectively. This clearly shows that the extent of the two works has been gradually reduced on account of the loss of some portion of the texts with the passage of time.
Titles : In his Sthânăngasūtrațākā (p. 3) Ac. Abhayadevasūri explains the title 'Sthana'. The explanation is as follows: "tişthanti āsate vasanti yathavad abhidheyataya ekatvádibhir vise
2. There is difference of opinion with regard to the meaning of 'pada'. The term
'pada' is variously explained. The svetāmbara works like Nandicūrņi explain it as 'yatrărthopalabdhis tat padam". svetāmbara Āc. Devendrasuri writes in his auto-commentary on Prathamakarmagrantha as follows: "'tu padam arthasamāptih'ity ady uktisadbhāve'pi yena kenacit padena aştādaśapadasahasrådipramāņa Ācārādigrantha giyante tad iha gshyate, tasyaiva dvadasāngaśrutaparimane'dhikstatvāt śrutabhedanām eva ceha prastutatvät/tasya ca padasya tathāvid hämnayābhāvāt pramanam na jñāyate".
But in the Digambara works we find altogether different explanation of the term'pada'.
In the commentary Dhavală (p. 84) on the Satkhandägama we have the following pertinent passage : "sampadi sudaņāṇassa padasařkhả vuccade/ tamjaha-ettha pamānapadań atthapadań majjhimapadaṁ cedi tivihań padar hodi/ tattha pamāṇapadan atthakkharanippannam jaha dhammo margalamukkattham [Daśavaikälika 1.1] iccãi / edehi caduhi padehi ega garitho / edena pamāṇena argabākirānarn coddasanhar Samaiyadipainnayaajjhayoyāņam padasamkha gaṁthasaṁkhă ca parūvijjade / jattiehim akkharehim atthovataddhi hodi tesimakkharāņam palavo atthapadań ņāma / tamjaha - pramonaparigrhītārthaikadese vastvadhyavasayo nayah'" etc.
And in the commentary Jayadhavala (pp. 99-93) on the Kaşayaprābhyta we find : “sola hasayacottisakodītiyasidilakkhaetthahattarisayaatthåsidia'kekharehi egam majjhimapadam hodi....16348307888 / edena puvvargånar padasarkhà parūvijjade /....

ganthaddham ca 2503380, eso lcham cagam tho 15/32/" 3. By the term 'śloka' the anuştup verse is meant here. In measuring the extent
of a particular text this verse is taken as a unit of measurement.
