LSIDDHASENA DIVAKARA
43
Now if this Skandila is really the preceptor of VỊddhavādi and can be identified with the Skandila bearing the title of Anuyogad hara and renowned as the Sūtradhāra of Mathurivācanā, his time can be taken to be approximately the fourth century of Vikrama era, that is to say, there is at least an interval of 200 years between Pādlipta and Skandila
(6) In the Prabhā vaka Carita VỊddhavādi is mentioned as a disciple of Skandila, while in the notes of Prabandha Cintā maņi? he is said to be the disciple of Ārya Suhasti. Out of these two versions that of Prabhāvaka Carita seems to be more consistent. Suhasti, the preceptor of Samprati and otherwise named as Arya. Suhasti, is the only Suhasti well-known in Jain tradition. Now his time is 200 years before Vikrama era. He can never, therefore, be the contenporary of Vpadhavādi. The statement of the Prabandha Cintāmaņi which seems to be due to the mistaken tradition regards Divā kara as associated with Mahā kāla Tirtha and Suhasti.
(c) For a discussion under this head, we refer to the section dealing with the Date of Divā kara at the beginning of the introduction.
1 The article of Shri Kalyāņa Vijayaji published in N. P. P. Vol. 10 Number 4.
2 In the Prabandh Chintamani there is no special chapter on either Siddhasena or Vrddhavădi but in the chapter on Vikramārka there is a reference to Siddhasena in connection with Vikramārka, The Editor has collected the account of Siddhasena and his preceptor from other sources and given it here in the foot-uote of this Prabandha, In it Vrddhavadi is said to be the disciple of Arya Suhasti.
