While selecting a particular reading we considered all the possible reasons for and against it. Moreover, our prolonged experience in the field of critically editing the Jaina Āgamic texts fecilitated our task of selecting proper readings for the critical edition of the Nandisūtra and the Anuyogadvārasūtra. Inspite of all this there might have remained some defects regarding readings. So, we invite suggestions from the learned scholars and monks and thus request them to extend their co-operation in this common task of preparing a faithful and correct version of the Jaina Āgamas.
NANDISŪTRAVIŠESA
The Nandisūtra deals with the topic of five jñānas. The same topic is extensively dealt with in the Avaśyakaniryuktipithikā gāthao 1-79, in the Visesavasyakamahābhāsya of Śrī Jinabhadragani gāthā 79-832 and in the commentarial literature like Cūrni-sīkā. The Kalpabhâsyapithika (gathā 24-148) too describes the five jñānas. Again, the Jitakalpabhāşya explains as to what pratyakşa is and as to what paroksa is. And it describes the nature of three jñānas avadhi etc. Generally the Jaina Āgamas like the Sthānānga, the Samavāyānga, the Bhagavatīsūtra, the Prajñapanopanga, the Jivābhigama explain here and there the five jñānas in a variety of ways. But in the Avaśyakaniryukti, the Višeşāvaśyakamahābhāsya, the Kalpalaghubhāsya and the Jitakalpabhasya the exposition of the five jñānas is extensive, detailed and systematic.
It is noteworthy that no extant ms. contains some of the readings that were available to the author of the Nandisūtracūrņi. .
Sūtra 5 gathā 22 embodies the adoration to Viraśāsana (= Religion propounded by Lord Mahāvira). The author of the Cürņi does not accept it. But Ac. Haribhadra and Ac. Malayagiri explain it in their Laghuvștti and V?tti respectively. This means that this gātha was available to them. Moreover, all the extant mss. of the Nandisūtra contain this gāthā.
Sthavirāvali (sūtra 6)-The Aväsyakaniryukti, written in 15th Cent V. S., contains 43 gāthas of the Nandisūtrasthavirāvali and 7 interpolated gāthas. Thus in all they contain 50 găthās. These 50 gāthas are not found in old palm-leaf and paper mss. And the Avasyakacūrni and the commentaries (tikas and avacūris) have not accepted them. Only the Dipikīvyākhyā of the Āvaśyakasūtra, composed by Ac. Māņikyasekharasuri of Añcalagaccha, explains all these 50 gåthås.
