have not given in the foot-note the reading found in the printed edition of Sagarānandaji. We would not have discussed this reading. But due to following reasons we discuss it. First, copies of the Agamaratnamañjușă are very few. Secondly, readers seldom refer to it. Thirdly, we want to correct the tradition of this blunder that has continued even in the Mülasuttāni and the Suttagame published years after the publication of the Agamaratnamañjūṣā. Fourthly, we want to give an instance of serious blunders that an editor may commit on account of his lack of sincerity and vigilance.
EDITOR'S NOTE
The conerned change has been made in sutras 591-2 of the Anuyogadvārasutra. These two sutras according to our version of the Anuyogadvārasūtra are se kim tam pasattha? 2 cauvvihā pannattā | tam jahā—kohajjhavanā mānajjhavanā màyajjhavanā lobhajjhavaṇā se ttam pasattha | (Sū. 591) | se kim tam appasatthă? 2 tiviha pannatta | tam jaha-nāņajjhavaṇā daṁsaṇajjhavana carittajjhavana se ttam appasattha | (Su. 592). The gist of these two sūtras, according to the Curni19 and Tikās,20 is as follows: The term jhavaṇā has been employed in the sense of kṣapană, apacaya or nirjară. That is, the term jhavana means destruction. Destruction of anger, pride, deceit and greed is auspicious and that of knowledge, faith and character is inauspicious.
The meaning of the abovementioned original text is coherent and consistent. Moreover, all the old mss. of the Anuyogadvārasūtra give the version as above. In spite of this in Ray Dhanapatisimhaji's edition the concerned two sutras are printed as follows: se kim tam pasatthā ? 2 tivihā paņṇattā | tam jahā-ṇāṇajjhavaṇā damsaṇajjhavana carittajjhavaṇā | settam pasattha se kim tam apasatthä 2 cauvviha pannatta | tam jaha-kohajjhavaṇā māņajjhavaṇā māyajjhavana lobhajjhavaņā setam apasattha | But it is noteworthy that the Maladhārāyā Tikā and the translation printed along with the text in this edition do not follow this corrupt and wrong version. The editions of the Anuyogadvarasutra published after this edition, i. e. in V.S. 197221, 197622, 198023, 199524, 201025 and 201126, follow it and give
