hundreds of passages pertaining to the same subject. Again, therein we find so many passages dealing with the same subject. All such passages help us in settling the final and faithful recension of the concerned text. Moreover, they acquaint us with the difference of opinion and different interpretation of a concerned word. Not only that but on their basis we acquire the knowledge of different traditions of interpreting the sutras of the same type. To elucidate this point we give below one illustration.
In the Acarangasūtra (first śrutaskandha, third Adhyayana, fourth Uddeśaka) there occurs a sutra: je egam name se bahum năme, je bahum name se egam name.
The context in which Śri Simhasūrigaṇivādikṣamāśramaṇa explains this sūtra in his Vṛtti on the Dvadaśāranayacakra of Śrī Mallavadi is different from the one in which the authors of the Curni and Vṛtti on Acarañgasūtra explain it. The explanation of the sutra, given by Sri Simhasūri is as follows:
'je eganāme se bahunāme' davvanāmaņṇā rukkhādīņam, nāmeti— ņa bhajjati, jahā ṇadīpūreņa gumma-latão nāmiyão puno unnamaṁti | bhāvanāmaṇā jo 'egam' anamtaṇubamdham kohaṁ nameti so bahum nameti 'bahu'tti sesă sattavisam kammaṁsā mohaṇijjassa | ahavā padesato thitito vā bahum jo bahum nāmeti, tam jaha-ana damso napumsaga uvasāmagaseḍhī rateyavvā |

'je egam' ityādi | yo hi....'ekam' anantānubandhinam krodham 'namayati' kṣapayati sa bahun api nāmādin namayati, apratyakhyānādin va svabhedān nămayati, mohaniyam vaikam yo namayati sa seṣā api prakṛtir namayati | yo va bahun sthitiseṣän nämayati so'nantānubandhinam ekam namayati mohaniyam va ....ato'padisyate-yo bahunāmaḥ sa eva paramarthataḥ ekanāma iti |

The pertinent passages given above from the Acārāmgacārņi and the Dvadaśāranayacakravṛtti throw light on the tradition of interpreting this sūtra and also on the reading of the sutra. The reading 'je egam name se bahum name, je bahum name se egam nāme' occurs in the extant mss. of the Acārāngasūtra. And this same reading occurred in the mss. that were before Ac. Silanka.
