the pilgrims. ” (દ. નં. ૧૩, ચોપડા નં. ૧૧૪, પૃ. ૪૬ ૦). ૧૦. કેપ્ટન બાને વેલે, ઉપરના પત્રમાં સૂચવ્યા મુજબ, ગાયકવાડ સરકાર પિતાને પાલીતાણું રાજ્ય
પાસેથી જે ખંડણી લેવાની થાય છે, તેમાં વાર્ષિક ત્રણ હજાર કે ચાર હજારને ઘટાડે કરે તે, શ્રાવક કોમને પાલીતાણા રાજ્યને, રખોપા નિમિત્તે, કશી રકમ આપવાની ન રહે, એ વાત મુંબઈ સરકારને લખી જણાવી, તે ઉપરથી મુંબઈના ગવર્નરના સેક્રેટરી મિ. જે. બી. સિમસને મેજર એફ. ડી. બેલેનટાઈનને આ બાબતમાં ઘટતું કરવા આ પ્રમાણે લખ્યું હતું
"If it appear to you unobjectionable, you will communicate regarding it with the Acting Resident of Baroda, that he may obtain the Gaekwar's concurrence in the arrangement.”
આ બાબતની જાણ પિતાને થયા પછી, વડોદરાના એકટીગ રેસિડેન્ટ મિ. સી. નેરીસે, તા. ૧૭–૨-૧૮૨૧ ના રેજ, મિ. સિમસનને પત્ર લખીને ખંડણીની આટલી રકમ જતી કરવાની બાબતમાં નામદાર ગવર્નરને અભિપ્રાય પિતાને લખી જણાવવાની વિનતિ કરી. ' આ વિનતિના જવાબમાં, મુંબઈના ગવર્નરના સેક્રેટરી મિ. સિમસને, તા. ૨૧-૨-૧૮૨૧ ના રોજ, લખી જણાવ્યું હતું કે
"I am directed by the Hon'ble the Governor to request you will inform His Highness that there is no intention on the part of the British Government to urge him to make any pecunniary sacrifice which he may think inexpedient.” (આને ભાવ એ હતો કે, નામદાર મહારાજાને જે આર્થિક ભેગ આપ ગેરવ્યાજબી લાગતો હોય, તે ભોગ તેઓ આપે એમ અંગ્રેજ હકૂમત ઈચ્છતી નથી.) આ પ્રમાણેના મુંબઈ સરકારના સ્પષ્ટ ખુલાસા પછી ગાયકવાડ
સરકાર પાલીતાણા રાજ્ય પાસેથી જે ખંડણી ઉઘરાવતી હતી, એમાંથી વાર્ષિક ત્રણથી ચાર ' હજાર જેવી રકમ ઓછી લેવાની વાતને અંત આવી ગયો હતે. ૧૧. આ પત્રનું મૂળ અંગ્રેજી લખાણ આ પ્રમાણે હતું–
