A NOTE ON JAINA ĀGAMAS
Upāngas only. In the Niryuktis, the term 'Cheda' is employed for the Niśītha, etc. The term 'prakırnaka' is as old as the Nandisutra, but in the Nandisūtra all the Āgamas except the Angas are called Prakırnaka.
All the Agamas except the Anga Agamas are composed at different times. The author of the Pannavanāsūtra is Syāmārya. The Daśā, the Kalpa and the Vyavahāra are composed by Arya Bhadrabāhu who possessed the knowledge of 14 Pūrva works. The author of the Nisithasūtra is Ārya Bhadrabāhu alias Vaśākhagani Mahattara. Sthavira Aryarakṣita has composed the Anuyogadvārasūtra. Śrī Devavācaka is the author of the Nandīsūtral. The Causarana, the Aurapaccakkhāna, the Bhattaparinnā and the Arādhanāpatākā which are included in the group of the Prakīrņakas are composed by Virabhadragani. According to the two readings available in the colophon of the Ārādhanāpatākā, viz. 'vikkamanivakālāo atthuttarime samāsahassammi' and 'atthattarime samāsahassammi' he flourished in 1008 V.S. or 1078 V.S. The author of the Bệhattippanikā states that the date of the composition of the Ārādhanapatākā is 1078 V.S. The author himself declares in his Ārādhanāpatākā (găthā 51) that he has already described the ārādhanāvidhi in the Bhaktaparijñā. This clearly points to the fact that this Bhaktaparijñā also is composed by him. Looking to the chronological order of the composition of the extant Causarana and Aurapaccakkhāņa, these two prakirnaka works also seem to be from the pen of Virabhadra. This Ārādhanāpatākā by Virabhadra is composed in imitation of the Arādhana Bhagavati by some Yāpaniya ācārya. The work referred to in the Nandīsūtra by the title 'Āurapaccakkhāna' is different from the one which goes by the same
me at present. Generally it is believed that Virabhadrācārya was a disciple of Lord Mahāvīra. But the above evidences go against this belief. Similarly, other Agama works are composed at different times. It is possible that the Rāyapasenīyasūtra was composed in the days of Lord Mahāvīra.
2. In the speech referred to in the foot-note No. 1 on page 1, regarding
the authorship of the Nandisūtra, Muni Shri Punyavijayaji, following the conclusion arrived at by Pam. Shri Kalyanavijayaji, opined that the author of the Nandisutra was Devarddhi Kşamāśramaņa. But afterwards he came across in Jinadāsagani Mahattara's NandisūtraCūrni and Haribhadrasūri's Nandisutra-Vrtti the clear mention of Devavācaka as the author of the Nandisutra. So, in the Jñānāñjali' he made correction and explicitly stated that the Nandisutra was composed by Devavācaka. Readers are requested to refer to the Nandisutra with Cürni (Prakrit Text Society Publicalion), p. 13 line 8 and the Nandîsūtra with Haribhadrasūri's Vytt: {P.T.S. Publication) p. 15 line 11, p. 17 line 26 and p. 33 line 10.
