remaining 44 adhyayanas according to the old tradition. From this it follows that there was an old tradition giving a detailed explanation of these 45 adhyayanas.
The Nandisūtra enumerates 31 Sūtra works in the class of Kalikaśruta, and among these 31 Sūtra works the Isibhāsiyāiñ finds its place. The Nadisūtracūrni and two Vrttis by Haribhadrasūri and Malayagiri simply remark that this Sūtra is easy to understand; they do not write any special note on it.
As stated above, the Samavāyāngasūtra and its Vrttti mention 44 adhyayanas of the Isibhāsiyāim Sūtra. Yet Pt. Shri Manoharainuniji Shastri in his 'Isibhāsiyaińsūtraparicaya' prefaced to his edition of the Isibhāsiyaim Sūtra states that even at the time of the compilation of the Samavāyāngasūtra, there must have been 45 adhyayanas, and in support he quotes a passage from the commentary. But we cannot accept his statement so long as we are not convinced of the authenticity of the quotation. This quotation given by him in a foot-note occurs after that passage from the Abhayadevasūri's Vrtti on the Samavāyāngasūtra, the passage I have already quoted. The quotation in point runs as follows: "kasyāpi pratyekabuddhasya anyasyāḥ kasyāścid gater āyātatvam apeksya pañcacatvārimśato'py adhyayanānām vivakşayā ekonataya'tral - Nandisutra 44" || Here the Nandisutra 44 is given as a source of this quotation. This naturally creates a wrong impression that the quotation is from the Nandisūtraţikā. As a matter of fact, if Shri Manoharamuniji wants us to accept that even the Samaväyāngasūtra has in view 45 adhyayanas of the Rşibhāṣita, he
