INTRODUCTION
Important suggestions for the reprinting
of the editions of old works
There are places in the printed editions of the Cūrņi, the Pāiyațākā and the Nemicandrīyatīkā as also in the Uttarādhyayanasūtra contained in these editions, which require correction. So, I insist on the comparison of the text of these printed editions with the text contained in the old mss. of the concerned works, before reprinting these editions. Even the old works other than Agamas should be reprinted only after comparing the already printed text with the text contained in the old mss. At this juncture I take the opportunity of pointing out the corrupt readings found in the printed editions of the Cūrni, the other two commentaries and the Uttarādhyayanasūtra printed along with them.
1. All the mss. of the Uttarādhyayanasūtra as also the ms. of the Päiyatīkı yield the reading nagaram in the sūtra 248. But in the printed text of the Päiyatīkā as also in the text of the Uttaradhyayanasūtra printed along with it we find nagarim and nagarim respectively.
2. For the portion missing in the printed edition of the Cūrni one may refer to foot-note 12 on p. 121.
3. All the mss. (used by me) except two, the Cürni, the Päiyatīkä and the Nemicandrīyatīkā accept the reading nāyāvattī (sūtra 337). But the two concerned mss., the printed editions of the Cūrņi, the Päiyațākā and the Nemicandrīyatīkā as also the Uttaradhyayanasütra printed along with these commentaries contain the reading nīyāvitti.
4. All the mss. used yield the reading davadavassa caraž in sūtra 537. The author of the Paiyaţikā has accepted this reading. Again, it is available in the mss. of the Nemicandrīyatikā. But the printed text of the Nemicandriyatīkā as also the text of the Uttaradhyayanasūtra printed along with it contain samcarai in place of carai.
5. The reading padilehanāanāutte (sūtra 538) is available in all the mss. used, as also in the mss. of the Päiyaţikā and even in the printed edition of the Nemicandriyaţikā. But the printed edition of the Päiyațākā and the text of the Uttaradhyayanasūtra printed along with the Paiyaţika and the Nemicandriyatīkā have the reading padilehāaņāutte (°utto ne).
6. The reading dehati (or dehai) occurring in sūtra 610 is available in all the mss. used as also in the mss. of the Nemicandriyaţikā and the Paiyațākā. But the printed edition of the Päiyatīkā and the text of the Uttaradhyayanasūtra printed along with it have the reading pehai in its place.
