Original readings different from the readings found in the Āgamodaya Samiti Edition :
Regarding the original readings different from the readings found in the Agamodaya Samiti Edition, we mention only four places as illustrations.
1. In the sūtras 9-23 of the sixth Uddeśa of the Thirteenth Sataka, all the mss. have the reading 'uddāyana'. But the Āgamodaya Samiti edition has the reading 'udāyaṇa' in its place. Though the reading 'udāyana' occurs in the eighth Sthana of the printed edition of the Sthânăngasūtra, all the old manuscripts of this Sūtra yield at this place the reading 'uddāyaṇa'.
2. In place of the reading moggala' accepted in the sūtras 16-18 of the 12th Uddeśa of the 11th Sataka, there occurs the reading poggala' in the Agamodaya Samiti edition as also in other printed editions. I have not come across a single 'ms. of the Bhagavatīsūtra yielding the reading 'poggala’ at this place. Here the word 'poggala' does not seem to be a proper noun; this is our opinion. The Pājasaddamahaņņavo, a voluminous Prakrit dictionary, does not mention the correct 'moggala' or corrupt ‘poggala' as a proper noun of a mendicant (parivräjaka).
3. The 12th Sūtra of the 6th Uddeśa of the 13th Sataka, mentioning the Queen Paumāvaī is available in all the mss. But this sūtra is not available in the Agamodaya Samiti edition. On this account I feel that the Āgamodaya Samiti edition has accepted the reading Spabhavatipamokkhão' in place of the reading "paumāvaipamokkhão' which is yielded by all the mss. at this place in the 21st Sütra.
4. In place of the reading 'evam cammam' occurring in the 18th Sūtra of the 9th Uddeśa of the 13th Sataka, we find the reading 'evam camaran' in the Agamodaya Samiti edition. The reading 'evam cāmaram' is not available in the mss. we consulted and scrutinised. Judicious Discrimination in Selecting Readings :
We used our judicious discrimination whenever there arose an occasion to decide as to which reading is the original one. To corroborate this fact mention may be made of five places as illustrations.
1. The reading "avarim occurring in the 6th Sūtra of the 6th Uddeśa of the 14th Sataka (p. 673, line 6) is yielded by all the three palmleaf mss. Paper mss. and the printed edition of Abhayadeva's Vrtti have the reading fuvarim' in its place. But the old mss. of Abhayadeva's Vrtti contain the reading favarim' only. Here we should bear in mind that it is not the style of Abhayadeva's Vịtti at all places first to give the word as pratīka and then to explain it. Moreover Ac. Abhayadeva has not commented upon the oft-explained and well known words in order to lessen the bulk of his commentary.
