Tirth means a ford, a vehicle to cross the ocean of miseries. Not only that they are liberated souls but they also show to others -a path of liberation, a state where there is no rebirth, ending all miseries and attaining eternal bliss. Of all Tirthankaras, Parshvanath is most worshipped. His temples and Pratimas (Idols) are maximum. The reasons for this is that, when he was in 10th heaven, he attended 500 auspicious occasions of other Tirthankaras. He profoundly bonded with Adeya Naam Karma, one of the 103 Karma Prakrutis (nature), hence, he is called purisādāņiya ("beloved of men"), a name which shows that he must have been a genial personality. He remains beloved among Jains. He is closely associated with compassion, although free from the world of rebirth, like all Tirthankaras, and therefore unable to aid his devotees personally, but his deities Yaksh Parshva and Yakshini Ma Padmavati get pleased on worshipper and shower their blessings for enormous wealth and healthy life. 3H$ 4, alma sa saal: wojegal-Halala:, wanna dag a: 11 This is the reason; Tirthankar Parshvanath is most popular object of Jain devotion. Thus, this is the strotra having capacity to destroy the calamities or troubles. It is said that, one Varahmihir had personal enmity with his younger brother, Bhadrabahu as Bhadrabahu found lots of mistakes in Varahmihir's knowledge of astrology. After death Varahmihir became Vyantar god and with his supernatural powers, he spread the epidemics of fatal diseases in the followers of Bhandrabahu to settle his revenge. People trapped in to such calamity went to Bhadrabahu Swami for its solution. Bhadrabahu Swami with his divine powers and with utmost faith in Tirthankar Parshvanath, created this strotra as prayer to Tirthankar Parshvanath. Recital of this destroyed all the calamities and troubles faced by people. Daily recitation of this divine strotra fulfills one's desire for good health and happiness. Farme SParootuseDily Page #5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Ma Padmavati Devi Padvamati Devi is the dedicated deity of Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankar. Tirthankar Parshvanath is always represented with the hood of a snake shading his head. The Yaksha Dharanendra and the Yakshi Padmavati are often shown flanking him. The demigoddess Padmavati is very popular amongst Jains. Legend has it that Padmavati and her husband Dharanendra were the king and queen of snakes in a previous birth, where their lives were saved and enlightened by Tirthankara Parshvanatha. Padmavati and Dharanendra were reborn in heaven and served as the attendant deities of Lord Parshvanatha They are believed to have rational perception (Samyak Drshti) and hence their idols are found in some Jain temples. Ichnographically, owing to Padmavati's association with Lord Parshvanatha, idols of Padmavati is covered by a snake hood and she is seated on a lotus flower. Her color is golden and her vehicle is the snake with a cock's head. She has four arms and her two right hands hold a lotus and a rosary. The two left hands hold a fruit and a rein. Often, a small image of the Tirthankara is placed in her crown. The Sadhna of Devi Padmavati is basically a Jain Sadhna for the purpose of attaining wealth and prosperity. Devi Padmavati sadhna is so fruitful that every individual irrespective of religion or community should try it and gain prosperity. Worshipping this goddess and nine times recitation of her Mantra daily in the morning and evening give us wealth and prosperity. 6. ॐनमो भगवती एमावली सईजन संहारिणी माम् सहारनोरथ पूर्ण सम् सद, चिन्ताहरणी ॐ पदमावती ममः दाहा। Page #6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Chintamani Yantra Parshva Yaksha Padmavati Yantra o Worshipping these Yantras daily in the morning and evening give us wealth and prosperity Page #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Tirthankars in Jainism Tirthankars are liberated souls who were once in bondage with Karmas, but became free from the ocean of miseries and the cycle of rebirths. They are perfect and blissful through their own efforts: they show the path of salvation by way of three jewels, i.e. right faith, right knowledge and right conduct. Time rolls along in eternal cycles of rise and decline. Utsarpini is a "rising" era in which human morale and natural conditions improve over time. At the end of Utsarpini, begins Avasarpini, a "declining" era of the same length, in which human morale and virtues deteriorate. These cycles are infinite. Infinite souls are liberated during these periods. However, in each of this Utsarpini and Avasarpini era, there are 24 souls who not only liberate themselves but also show the path of liberations to others. They make for us the ford (Tirth) to cross the ocean of miseries, hence called, Tirthankaras. For the true Jains, Tirthankaras are worshipped for inspiration to be like him and not for worldly material gains but his worship can bind Punya, which will bring good rewards in terms of wealth and health. Whether it is prosperity or spirituality, worshipping Tirthankaras give us enormous blessings. His nine previous births were: 1. Marubhuti 2. An Elephant 3. Heavenly god in Sahstra heaven 4. Kiranveg Vidyadhar Heavenly god in Achyuta heaven 6. Vajranabh 7. Heavenly god in Nav Graiveyak 8. Kanakbahu Cakrin 9. Heavenly god in Pranat heaven and last one as Parshwanath 5. Ho del hold you From his first birth as Marubhuti he had entangled with Kamath, as his elder brother. Ironically, this elder brother contrived to lure and secure Marubhuti's wife, the king on hearing this episode punished Kamath, depriving him of his post and banishing him out of his kingdom. When Marubhuti came to know of this development, he went in search of him and pleaded his innocence. Highly incensed he was, Kamath was in no mood to listen to him and killed him instantly by throwing a boulder over his head. In all subsequent lives it is the soul of Kamath on one side with anger and revenge & soul of Parshvanath on other side with forgiveness and compassion. What do we learn primarily from the life of Tirthankar Parshvanath? Never carry forward ill-feeling towards others. Try to nipit at the bud. The life of Lord Parshwanath teaches that enmity etched in the mind harms the individual for a long period of births. Secondly, only cure to anger is kshama or forgiveness For Private Personale Only Page #9 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Life of Tirthankar Parshvanath Antiquity Parshvanath or Parshvanatha (pärívá-nätha, occasionally spelled Parshvanath or Parswanath) was the twenty-third Tirthankara (ford maker) in Jainism. He existed in the 9th Century BCE, traditionally (877-777 BCE). He is the earliest Jain leader generally accepted as a historical figure. There are indications that the 23rd Tirthankar, Parsvanath Swami, preached Jainism in Kalinga during the 7th century BC & King Karakanda was converted by him. According to the Jain tradition he attained nirvana 250 years before the nirvana of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankar. King Siddhartha and Queen Trishla, father and mother of Tirthankar Mahavir were the followers of Lord Parshwanath Birth About 3000 years ago king Ashvasen was ruling over Varanasi which is also known as Banaras. It is situated on the bank of holy river Ganga. He was a benevolent and popular ruler. He had a queen named Vamadevi. She gave birth to a son. During her pregnancy she had once observed a snake passing by her side. In memory of that incident the boy was named as Parshvakumar, because Parshva in Sanskrit language means beside. Parshwanath belonged to Nagvansh, i.e. the Mangoloid people Marriage Parshvakumar started growing up in the midst of wealth and happiness. In due course he grew up to be a very attractive young man known for his courtesy, bravery and valor. His reputation spread all round and many rulers were eager to get their daughters married to him. During that time there was another well known city named Kushasthal and king Prasenjit was ruling there. He had a very beautiful and talented daughter named Prabhavati. As she became young, her parents started looking for a suitable match for her. Once while Prabhavati was playing in a garden with her friends, she heard a song to the effect that prince of Varanasi is very handsome and brave and that the gir who marries him would be a very lucky girl. Prabhavati was impressed by that. She obtained all possible information about Parshvakumar and got enamored of him. As her friends came to know of her attachment for Parshvakumar, they gave hints to her parents. Thereupon Prasenjit decided to convey her wishes to the king of Varanasi. Page #10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ At that time another powerful ruler named Yavan was ruling over Kaling. He knew about Prabhavati and wanted to marry her. When he heard about the plan of Prasenjit to offer Prabhavati to the prince of Varanasi, Yavan decided to get her by force. Accordingly, he took a large army with him and surrounded Kushasthal. Prasenjit was no match for him. He therefore secretly sent a messenger to king Ashvasen with a request for help. When Ashvasen heard the messenger, he got ready with his army. Parshvakumar however did not like that his father should take that trouble. He therefore, volunteered to go in his place and proceeded towards Kushasthal with a large force. For a while, Yavan tried to belittle the force of Varanasi. Ultimately however he heeded to saner advice and agreed to retreat from Kushasthal. Prasenjit then welcomed Parshvakumar with valuable presents and due respect. He then put forth his proposal for marrying his daughter. Parshvakumar was however not inclined to get married and indicated his intention to go back to Varanasi. Prasenjit then decided to use the good offices of king Ashvasen for that purpose. Accordingly, he decided to go with Parshvakumar to Varanasi along with his daughter. King Ashvasen was very impressed by the beauty, grace and talents of Prabhavati. He and Vamadevi therefore prevailed upon their son to marry Prabhavati. The wedding ceremony was performed with all the pomp and splendor and Parshvakumar started passing happy days with Prabhavati. Encounter with Kamath At that time there was a Tapas (a monk doing penance) named Kamath. He had lost his parents in childhood and was raised as an orphan. Being disgusted of his miserable life, he had become a monk and was undergoing severe penance. He came to Varanasi for performing a Panch Agni (five fires) penance. Many people were impressed by his penance and were going to that place for worship. When Parshvakumar came to know of that, he realized the violence of live beings involved in the fire. He came there and tried to dissuade Kamath from the sacrificial fire. Kamath did not agree that life of any being was at stake on account of his performance. By his extra sensory perception, Parshvakumar could observe that there were snakes in the wood that was put in the sacrificial fire. He asked his servants to take out that wood and to shear it carefully. Twin serpents were half burnt and already on the verge of loosing their consciousness. Parshwa asked his servants to let the twin serpents listen the "Namaskar Mahamantra."Servants obliged to the order and recited Mahamantra. At the end of their life, the snakes went to Patal-loka and turned to be husband and wife as Dharnendra and Padmavati respectively. hona nahi mare For Private Personale Only Page #11 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Initiation His time for initiation drew near and Lokantik Gods came to remind him for the initiation. Observing the miseries that living beings had to experience, Parshvakumar developed a high degree of detachment. At the age of 30 he renounced everything in the world and became a possession less monk. Before he set out for renunciation of the world, charity custom began to relinquish all the worldly wealth for the one year. After completion of the charity work, he embraced the royal path to salvation. At this stage he attained fourth Gyan called Manah Paryaya. He spent most of his time meditating in search of ultimate bliss. Last and final encounter with Kamath Kamath was too much annoyed by interference of Parshva in his penance but was unable to do anything at that time. He started observing more severe penance and at the end of his life, was reborn as Meghmali Dev. Once ,Parshwa was meditating near "Ahichatra" town at present in UP. He was so concentrated vigorously in the meditations, he had forgotten the outer world and was totally in his own self, Kamath, saw this opportunity to take revenge. He came down to earth and started harassing Parshwa by all possible means. By his supernatural power, he brought forth all kinds of fierce an harmful animals like elephants, lions, leopards, snakes etc but did not get success. He then produced with the help of his divine power the huge gathering of th dark clouds and it started raining heavily with horrible thunderstorms and lightening. He did it so vehemently and dangerously that the outskirts of the Ahicato town was submerged with the flood waters. The water rose to the level of the nose of Parshwa. The throne of Dharnendra shook. He used his divine knowledge to know the cause of the shaking. He realized the matter. He understood his important dutie and with his queen Padmavati, rushed to the spot of scene at once. They came there and paid salute to the Parshwa. Realizing their duties, Padmavati generate beautiful huge lotus. She sat under the lotus and kept Parshwa, who was in the standing posture at that time in the lotus. Dharnendra spread his fangs all aroun the head and sides of the Parshva so as to protect him from the rains Now as the water level grew; the lotus moved in the upward direction and due to snake hoo shelter Parshwa was protected from the obstacles produced by the Kamath. Dharnendra, told Kamath to withdraw his divine power and allow Parshwa to meditate smoothly. Adamant Kamath did not listen to the advices and starte quarreling with Dharnendra. Ultimately, Dharnendra won over Klamath. Kamath and Dharnendra were doing their respective jobs, one for destruction an other for protectinon respectively, but Parshwa was neither had attachment to Dharnendra nor did he had spate for Kamath. He was "STHITPRAGYA" in terms Bhagwad Gita and "Vitragi" in terms of Jainism 10 For Private Personal Galy www Page #12 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Liberation Parshwa attained Omniscience after 84 days of initiation. He then turned to be BHAGWAN PARSHWANATH. He established his own four-fold order. Thereafter he lived long life spreading the true religion. His teachings in seventy years had tremendous impact on the society. He is often viewed as the real founder of Jainism As his end of life drew near he approached Sammetshikhar and accepted Anasan(Total fasting) and relinquished his body forever at the age of 100 years and attained Nirvana-Liberation, on Samet Shikhar Mountain. This is located in the state of Bihar and is the most famous place of pilgrimage for Jains. The soul of Parshwanath now enjoys eternal peace and bliss. TELE Statues of Parshvanath Lord Pärsvanātha is always represented with the hood of a naga shading his head. This nāga usually has three, seven or eleven heads. The Yaksha Dharanendra and the Yakshini Padmavati are often shown flanking him In Jain canonical literature, Parshvanatha is represented in 'Padmasana' (lotus) posture - both palms and feet, with auspicious lotus marks on them, placed upward. He has blue-black complexion - the color of the cosmos. The seven-hooded serpent Shesha-umbrella-like unfurling its hoods over the deity, represented elements of the earth and the ocean and has hence a similar body colour. Parshvanatha has been represented as wearing a gem-studded crown and other ornaments. He has a golden throne as a seat and a rich canopy above. Many temples are dedicated to Lord Parshvanath throughout India. There are at least 108 different images (names/roop) by which he is honored. They are called Kalyanak (auspicious events). They are: Chyavana Kalyanak - This is the event when the Tirthankar's soul departs from its last life, and is conceived in the mother's womb. Janma Kalyanak - This is the event when the Tirthankar's soul is born. Diksha Kalyanak - This is the event when the Tirthankar's soul gives up all his/her worldly possessions and becomes a monk. Kevaljnana Kalyanak - This is event when Tirthankar's soul destroys the four Ghati karmas completely and attains the Kevaljnana (absolute knowledge). Celestial angels set Samavsaran for Tirthankars from where he delivers the first sermon. This is the most important event for the entire Jain order as the Tirthankar reinstates Jain Sangh and preaches the Jain path of purification and liberation Nirvana Kalyanak - This event is when a Tirthankar's soul is liberated from this worldly physical existence forever and becomes a Siddha. On this day, the Tirthankar's soul destroys the four Aghati karmas completely, and attains salvation, the state of eternal bliss. Five Kalyanaks of Parshwanath are as under: 1. Kalyan Mandir Stotra Kalyan Mandir Stotra graphically narrates the victory of Maharish Parshwanath over the one-sided war waged by the demon Kamath's-soul The message, the author possibly drives home is this: Please do not ge over awed by the power of demon and Vyantara gods. Tirthankar is all powerful and he single-handedly withstood the troubles created by the demon. Even among Jains, there is this hidden false-belief that there is some shelter in these lesser gods. Stanza 39-41 emphatically rule out such false hopes and shows that Sharan or rescue is only at the feet of Tirthankars. Distinguishing features of Jainism 1) Non violence: The non-violence in Jainism means reverence and compassion towards all living beings not only animals but microorganisms too. It should be practiced in thoughts, words and deeds. Jain masters have thought of environmental protection at least about 2600 years back and insisted to demonstrate non-violence to animals, plants, and even to water, air and earth for our own peaceful existence. The entire ethical practices of Jains revolves around Non Violence and Jivdaya. 2) Anekantvad: The Jain masters have given the principle of Anekantvad meaning not only tolerance but respect for others' views. This encourages harmony and peaceful co-existence with fellow human being. Simple practice of this principle can lead the world to violence free and free from fears and conflicts. 3) Theory of Karma-No God's interference-: Theory of Karma propounded by Jains is very unique. It does not even allow God's blessings or shelter to annihilate the punishment for the misdeeds committed by person. This in a way is a teaching which makes one the most careful about his actions. 4) All can be Supreme Beings: Most of the religions accept the concept of one Supreme being. All other souls are inferior to that Supreme Being, and even in he highest spiritual state they can not become Supreme Being. Contrary to this Jainism believes that there are infinite souls in this Universe and they all have the potential to be like Supreme Beings. All Supreme Beings are liberated souls without any rebirth in miseries and enjoy eternal bliss. 5) Jainism is a way of life: Jainism offers various solutions for perfect physical, mental, social and spiritual health of all. Its diet rules, rituals and philosophies have much more to offer for well being of all individually and collectively. It centers on self and its relation to other living beings. Its worship to God is purely inspirational to be like him and not for any favours. The Sutra T a ' means souls are interdependent in their worldly form of life. It balances the harmony between human beings and the smallest creature on the earth. The practice of non-violence, power of forgiveness, tolerance, compassion, balancing the needs and desires can bring peace and bliss to us and to those around us. The concept of non-violence is extremely relevant in today's world. The ultimate aim of the Jain follower is to get liberated from the transmigration of life and death, as there is no life without miseries. The liberated souls are called Siddhas. They have infinite knowledge, infinite power and infinite bliss and no longer they have cycle of birth and death.
