________________ The Story of Merchant Campaka. Critically edited osoby Johannes Hertel. Introduction. I. Weber's edition. Two recensions of the Campaka sresthikathanak a. The f u which is published in the following pages was known to European scholars as early as 1883, when Prof. Albrecht Weber published the text of a single MS. of this little work in the Sitzungsberichte der Kgl. Preuss. Ak. der Wissenschaften, ph..h. Cl., p. 567 ff., with additions p. 885 ff. Besides the Sanskrit text this editor gave an introduction, emendations and explanations, a German translation and supplementary matter supplied to him chiefly by 0. von Bohtlingk, G. Buhler, J. Gildemeister, R. Kohler, E. Kuhn and E. Leumann. Bohtlingk published further corrections of Weber's text and translation in Melanges Asiatiques. tome IX (1880-1885), pages 75 to 86 ("Tire du Bulletin, T. XXIX', and dated 27th Sept./9th Oct. 1883). As Weber's text, being based on a single MS., must needs be faulty in many places, I have thought it worth while to publish this pretty and well told story, which is highly interesting to students of folklore, as well as to Sanskrit scholars of the West and of the East, on a somewhat larger basis and in a way which would make it easily accessible to European and American, as well as to Indian, friends of Sanskrit literature. For the use of folklorists I give below a German translation with some references to Asintic and European off-shoots and parallels. According to the last sentence of the text as given in Weber's MS., the author of the faith would have been a Suri named fogaita. But, as none of our other MSS. confirm this statement, which in Weber's MS. is given not in an author's prasasti, but in a simple copyist's note, the authorship of Jinakirti is very uncertain. But, even if we assume, that the author's name has been correctly handed down to us in this note, we are not Zeitschrift der D.M.G. Bd. L.XV.

________________ Introduction. entitled to identify this Jinakirti with the pupil of Somasundarasuri (+ Samvat 1499), as does Klatt in his admirable "Specimen of a Literary-Bibliographical Jaina-Onomasticon'), p. 15. For there is no reason to assume that there has existed only one Jaina scholar of this name. At all events, the author of our story must have lived in Gujarat ) considerably before the composition of the metrical Sanskrit version which was completed in Samvat 1653 %). To my great regret I was not granted either the use of the 3 Campaka- MSS. belonging to the upasraya of Pophliano Pado in Patan"), nor of the one MS. known from the catalogue of the upasraya of Deblano Pado in Ahmedabad"). But Mr. Modi Keshavlal Premchand was kind enough to send me two copies of our story from another subdivision of the Ahmedabad Bhandar, and one from the Jain Pustakalaya in Chhani, near Baroda. A fourth MS. was forwarded to me by Shastravisharada-Jainacarya Muniraj Shri Dharmavijaya Suri, of Benares; a fifth and sixth, belonging to the Deccan College library, by F. W. Thomas, and besides I used the readings of the Berlin MS. as given by Weber. The seven MSS. just recorded contain two different texts, the prose text published in the following pages, and a metrical version, which has been made from this prose text. The following MSS. contain the prose recension: A = Poona MS., Bhand. Cat. VIII, 718 (4 leaves, 20 lines, from Jeypur). B = Ahmedabad Bhandar, TTdeg 40, nr. 80, (8 leaves, 15 lines, not very old). C = Poona MS., Bhand. Cat. VIII, 717 (18 leaves, 11 lines, new copy, from Pathan). D = Dharmavijaya's MS. (11 leaves, 13 lines; dated Samvat 1631). W = the Berlin MS., nr. 2017, as printed by Weber. All these copies are paper MSS. A is in a careful old handwriting on fine thin old paper. At the end of the MS. its copyist gives his name as Pandit Bhuvana merug anin. A Bhuvanameruganin is mentioned as the brother of a copyist who copied a MS. in Sam. 1706). - B shows numerous marginal additions in 1) Leipzig, O. Harrassowitz 1892. , Weber, 1. c. p. 570. On page 285, 80 W ATTY T is a misprint for at taatat, as Mr. Premchand kindly informs me. This, then, is quite another work a second copy of which is mentioned on p. 239, STdeg 3EUR, nr. 00 *99TOTT. The first of these two M88. comprises 85, the second 34, leaves. See Weber's Catalogue II, 3, p. 928, nr. 1962.

________________ 3 Introduction. a hand which is different from that of the copyist. The first page of this extremely faulty copy contains some short stories, the last one two small texts. C. This quite recent and rather incorrect copy has been revised by two correctors. The first is generally right in his alterations and has compared either the original from which C derives, or some MS. which very closely agreed with this original. The second corrector, writing with pencil, was not an intelligent person. Most of his alterations show that he knew very little Sanskrit. D is a good MS. The other two MSS. contain the metrical recension. They are : M = Ahmedabad Bhandar, marked as DAdeg 50, nr. 39 ( 15 leaves, 18 lines, not very old ). m = Chhani MS., numbered as 219 ( 10 leaves, 15 lines; dated saMvat 1962 poSa zuklapace 4 caturthI bhRguvAsare). m is very faulty and swarms with interpolations. Whereas M contains 422 stanzas (the MS. wrongly numbers 420), m numbers 479 stanzas. This metrical version is a rather slavish versification of the prose text. It has not even a value for the restoration of difficult passages. Its author apparently had already a somewhat corrupted and interpolated prose text before him. He belonged to the Tapagaccha; his name and title was Jayavimala-gani, and he composed his work in Samvat 1658. Metrical and very serious grammatical blunders occur in his text. In stanza 110acm has a grammatically correct reading; but this is no doubt the result of correction by some copyist; for in 114d the blunder kSudhArtinA has similarly been corrected in m; but the correction is as barbarous as the original reading itself. Substantially the only difference between the prose and the metrical version is that in the latter the genius faf, as should be expected, is represented as a male. But this evidently is an alteration by Jayavimala. The text on which his versification was based must have had considerable interpolations. As in our passage the quotations 107, 109, 117, 118, 181, so in the rest of his text many others fail to occur in the prose version. The revised MS. m has even more such interpolations than M. In one passage the immediate original from which Jayavimala made his versification seems to have been altered in a foolish manner. For the two padas 111cd: suSvApa vimartu mantrI tasva duHkhapravadvacaH correspond to the last words of SS 27 of the prose version: suSvApa mantrI manasISTadevatAM smaran / vidhestadvacanaM na vismaran ). In no single case does the versification afford the slightest help towards correcting corrupt passages of the prose recension. 1) M svapratijJAM vidhAMnAya, corr. to our reading; m svapratijJAM vidhAnIya // 2) " saMpadI // 3) / cApadaH // 4) m cIyate // ") m *gaNAH // 6) As for two corrupted Prakrt stanzas which Jayavimala found in his prose text, cp. below p. 9, note 5. ||

________________ Introduction. Hence it is certain, that the MS. which Jayavimala used was more corrupted and as we have just stated -- more interpolated than the text contained in our best MSS. of the prose recension, one of which (viz. D) is dated Sam. 1631, and hence is older than the metrical version itself. Nevertheless this MS. D derives from the author's autograph by several intermediate MSS.; see below, p. 11. Moreover, Jayavimala does not mention the name of the author of our story, evidently because in his time already this name had been forgotten. On the other hand, the last words of Jayavimala's prasasti, viz. vihitAH khokAcaritrasya, without any other designation of his source, seem to imply that this afty, i. e. the prose recension of the Campakasresthikathanaka, was then a well-known work. From all this we may safely conclude, that the prose recension of the Campakasresthikatha is considerably older than the verse. II. The MSS. used for this edition. Our edition is based on the MSS. ABCDW mentioned above p. 2. All of them go back not directly to the MS. of the author himself, but to some intermediate copy, as they have several striking mistakes in common. In $ 6* all our MSS. have the mistake a fu or a misunderstood correction of it (C). In $ 74, all our MSS. read u for galaraMdhe na1). In 8 772 W's reading urifat is evidently a successful correction of a blunder preserved in the other MSS.: ACD parIpsito, B (which usually goes with w) parIpasito). In $ 794 ACDW read amer, B ato for "ge, and in $ 795 ACW opiut, Boute for outy, which is the reading of D, certainly a correction"). The Prakrit stanzas SS 12 and 87 seem to have been corrupted in the common archetype of all our MSS.") That the archetype of our MSS. contained glosses, may be inferred from $11, where faera is evidently a gloss on torfazan, or vice versa, from 518, , where sIvarNikamaNivartaka is a gloss on suvarNakAramaNi217, or vice versa; from $ 171, where a t afai A must be a gloss on avati; from $ 19 8/9, where af is a gloss on a, or vice versa; from $ 56 beg., where foarte is a gloss on fafy (or vice versa), from $ 56 (see variants), where is a gloss on , from 75%, where ait is a gloss on Haterat, and from $ 76 40, 41, where wera is evidently a gloss on an original reading w a ard (see variants $ 76 41). But these errors and glosses of the archetype are comparatively few in number; and hence we may perhaps conclude that this archetype was a MS, which pretty faithfully reproduced the author's wording. No one of our MSS. has been copied from any other. CD BW form a separate group, and amongst them CD stand over against BW. 1) It is equally missing in Mm. ________________ 10 Introduction. MS. A contains a slightly enlarged text. Numerous small additions have been made in it, in order to elucidate the meaning of the respective passages. A very great number of these additions goes back to glosses of some previous MS. Every reader of our variants will verify this fact in many places. I, therefore, do not propose giving here all the proofs of my assertion. Some striking cases will be sufficient. In SS 58 5 our text reads atratyajanArpitatAmbUlamapi, 4 atratyajanAdantarpitatAMbUlamapi Here a gloss datta, which must have been written in some previous MS. over ft, has crept into the body of the compound; hence the wrong long syllable T, and the wrong short syllable, in A's reading. In SS 619 a gloss ciMtitaM ca has been inserted in 4 after svapAmi (so 4 for svafufa), i. e. in a wrong place; for the glossator must have intended its insertion after dRSTvA In 8650, A ins. subhaTA after sarve 'pi. But, of course, they who weep are not the murderers, but the inhabitants of the town who in the morning find the corpse of the merchant. Wherever we remove the additions of A, we get a satisfactory text. Hence it is clear, that on the whole the group CDBW is more original than the text of A. CD do not share the additions and they avoid most of the corruptions of A; on the other hand, they are free from several mistakes, which BW have in common. Cp. SS 108 BW TT for rAjA, and $ 100 BW prayANaM for prayANa. In $ 132 BW wrongly om. f, and in SS 1710 Tet. In the same section 14 BW read bhramatI for correct bhramantI, in $ 358 kRtaM for kRta. In $405 they evidently wrongly insert far after . In SS 592 BW read *zrutamaraNadeg for * zrutatanmaraNadeg, in $ 652 kRtyam for kRtakRtyam. In SS 66 20 they omit T, IV leaving out a blank for two aksharas. In 8678BWread prabhUtasthAnopakaraNepi for prabhUtasthApanopAyakaraNe 'pi. CD have a great quantity of right, and especially C of wrong readings of their own. This, and the cases just mentioned, show, that CD cannot have been copied from the immediate archetype of BW. Marking the author's MS. with, the common archetype of our five MSS. with, the archetype of CDBW with, the

III. Principles which have guided the editor in the construction of the text. The archetype , though it was not the author's MS. itself, apparently did not deviate very much from it. A's discrepancies from o are in most cases evident alterations, though, of course, in some cases A's readings may be right, and slight alterations may have taken place in ). I therefore strive to give an emended text of the archetype 7. In order to do so, I chose the MSS. of the 7-class for the basis of my text, deviating from them only where their readings were evidently wrong. In these cases I have taken into my text the readings of A, unless they too were obvious blunders. All my MSS., for instance, misunderstand the wording of 8760: sUtradhAra eva jAnAti kimatra dUSaNamiti / The archetype seems to have had a wrong danna after stufa, and later copyists, independently of one another, supplied HH, in order to make the words fm quufafa a complete sentence. Hence we read in A: HTTfo ufafa, in CD: H HH - Namiti, and in BW kimaca dUSaNaM mameti. Here it is clear that the readings of CD and BW go back to a gloss HA, which had been written over gufafat in the archetype 3, and which 2) In SS 15, for instance, the metre shows tuat A's reading is the best, whereas the insertions of C (apa), WD ( a t) and B (corrupt: Saya) go back to what was originally a gloss.

________________ 12 Introduction. subsequently crept into the text in slightly different places in E on the one hand, and in on the other. Consequently A# had to be removed from the text as it evidently did not belong to the archetype C, though all our MSS. support it. Wherever a good reading is supported by either A and C or D, or A and B or W, this reading must be put into the text. In one case only I have thought it necessary to deviate from this principle. The name of Campaka's enemy is given in the first part of our tale by all my MSS. as gta or -- corrupted - as vRddhadatta. The metrical version of our text has the form vRddhadatta, MS. C the forms vRddhidatta and vRddhadatta throughout the text, whereas the other MSS. replace it by the form vAdhU (or vAdhUdatta $ 53* ABW) in the second part of the story. D writes afect, vAdhU, vAdhUdatta and vadhUdatta. In 8 32 2 the form vAdhU appears for the first time in BW, whereas A retains here and in the following sections the form Em. In 391 a blending of que and atU - as the form TUZT just mentioned - appears in A in the form vRddhora pyadeg (BW vAdhUrapyadeg), and henceforth ABW agree in the exclusive use of the form aty to the end of the tale. The author of the UT was a careful writer. He strictly observed the rules of grammar, his text is free from Prakritisms; his language, like that of most Jain writers of Gujarat, is only occasionally influenced by the style and the vocabulary of his mother tongue). It is not likely that such an author should have employed two forms for the name of the same person. Either the Sanskrit, or the vernacular form must have originated in a gloss, and, as agrees with the metrical version in giving the Sanskrit form of the name throughout, I follow C in this case even against ABW and occasionally D. But it is possible, too, that the Gujarati-form vAdhU at the side of sAdhudatta and sAdhU, the name of Vyddhidatta's brother, goes back to the author himself?). If this view be right, gfect or 757 must originate in a gloss, and should be removed from the first part of the text, though all our MSS. support it here. 1) Buhler, AKPAW. 1883, p. 885 f. 9 This is Windisch's opinion, 1. c. p. 889. But I cannot believe with Weber (1. c. p. 577, n. 2) and Windisch (1. c. p. 889), that the first and the second part of our story go back to different authors.

________________ 13 Introduction. For the convenience of quoting my text I give the numbers of its tales in Roman figures in the margin. These figures are included between brackets after an emboxed story, where the main story continues. For the same reason I have divided the body of the text into 90 sections (S), the numbers of which are similarly given in the margin, but in Arabic figures. My critical notes contain not only the complete variants of my MSS., but also a great part of their blunders. No serious mistake has been omitted in the varia lectio. For these blunders, the mention of which might seem to uncritical readers at first sight superfluous, are of the highest value to the scholar, inasmuch as they give him the key to the relations which exist between the different MSS., and as they often afford the very basis for critical work). A later editor who perhaps will have more and better MSS. than I, will be enabled, by studying and comparing with the readings of his materials the blunders recorded in my notes, to insert his own MSS. in their right place in the pedigree given above, and in case his MSS. show no relation whatsoever to , to give a text which comes nearer to the MS. written by the author himself than my present edition. It would, however, have been impossible to note down all the blunders of my MSS., especially those of the very faulty copies B and C. Clerical errors as prAhaH, atha:, degsaktyA for *zaktyA, sutassa for sutasya (a Prakritism of the copyist's), lagane for lame, svayaM for striyaM pratihaM for pratyahaM, dvayo 'pi for dvayorapi and the like I have neglected in my notes, wherever they occur in one single MS. and in cases where they cannot give rise to any new reading. In SS 54 I therefore give from B the clerical error the right reading 1) In this respect I may mention the fact, that it was before all by obvious blunders which had passed from MS. to MS. and from recension to recension that it was possible to clear up the history of the Sanskrit Pancatantra. A learned scholar like Gopal Raghunatha Nandargikar in his edition of Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa (Bombay 1891) p. 5 says: 'On the other hand, some European Sanskritists, particularly those who are not perfect masters of their subject and are nevertheless conscientious, follow a different rule [viz. different from that laid down by Max Mueller]: they jot down all the blunders they meet with, not excepting printers' mistakes, as varietas lectionis. In very ancient, and in archaic, unintelligible works, such as the Vedas and Chanda's poems [!], this is ordinarily a safe rule to follow, but, strictly enforced, it results in a Chinese tailor's work, copying patch and all. It cannot lay claim to the credit of intelligent critical editing.' To these word. I beg to object, that the texts of the Vedas are known to be handed down with considerably greater accuracy than mediaeval texts, especially mediaeval prose texts. For the Veda was believed to be a divine literature, whereas in profane works most copyists permitted themselves slight or even serious alterations. Very often a blunder leads to the original reading, whereas correct readings are often the result of conjectural restoration of a faulty passage. For conjectural criticism was practiced by the mediaeval pandits as well as by European editors.

________________ Introduction. I. Story of Merchant Campaka. being tataca as some scribe copying B might have corrected this tacca to itazca; and in $ 892 I give the faulty reading bhAryAsuto, which some copyist might have corrected to sabhAryAsutI . On the other hand I have neglected most of the numerous marginal and other additions made by later hands, especially the numerous stanzas written on the margins of B. For these additions are clearly not taken from a genuine, or even from any, MS. of our T. As to the corrections entered by later hands in my MSS., I give them, wherever they are good; in these cases, of course, I always explicitly state the fact that these emendations go back not to the copyist himself, but to some later corrector. The Chief Librarian of the East India Office, London, Mr. F. W. Thomas, kindly revised the above lines in respect of their style. Moreover, he as well as Shastravisharada Jainacharya Shri Dharmavijaya Suri of Benares, and Mr. Premchand Keshavlal Mody, B. A., of Ahmedabad, provided me with the MSS. on which my edition is based. The Sadhu Indra Vijaya, senior disciple to Dharma Vijaya Suri, kindly explained me the expressions zrIkaraNAdhyakSa ($ 740), khaTIka, and jhagaTaka (in the Sanskrit texts printed in the introduction to the German translation); he gave me his opinion on rasa ( 7410), and confirmed my explication of vaijJAnazAlika ($ 115 ). I here express my sincere feelings of gratitude for the kind help afforded to me by these gentlemen. 14 // arham // ' 10 16 I. 1 campA nAma nagarI saugandhika[gAndhika] tAmbUlikakAndavika suvarNakAramaNikAra[sauvarNikaMmaNivartakaM ] nANavartaka sukhabhakSikAkAraM kaNApaNikadUSyakacarmakAraMkAMsyakAramAlAkArasUtradhAraM ghRtApaNikatai likasaucikakArpAsikabhANDazAlikakASThazAlikaraja kapaTTikavejJAna zAlika tantuvAryaprabhRti - caturazIticatuSpatharamaNIyA / tatra sAmantapAlo rAjA / tatra" vRddhidatto vyavahArI / tasya ca " suvarNAnAM SaNavatikoTayo 'bhISTadevatAvaddevatApavarake pUjyante / sa ca nityaM kusIdatvena" prativarSa karNaghRtalAdisaMgrahAvasaravikrayaNena sthAvarakrayANakasthApanayA bahumUlya muktAphalaratnakrayAdinA ca vittamarjayAmAsa / tathApi devagurupUjAtithisa tkArAdisukRtarahitatvena nijaM manujajanma" vyarthayAmAsa / 20 21 26 anyadA pAzcAtyarAtrI' jAgarUko yo 'syA lakSmyA bhoktA 7
