Following is the progress report during this quarter. We have inserted in this issue, a copy of "JAINA at a Glance", which you can pull out and keep as a reference. You can call upon any Executive Committee member or the Head Quarter for any JAINA related need. Additionally, you can call upon any member society president when you visit in a town, and visit the temple. On line JAINA convention 2003 registration has already started. Please register before Jan 15 2003 to get early bird rates. It is $90 for each person 12 and up, and $60 for each child under 12. Please look inside for full details. Also, there is other concurrent convention; hotel rooms will be in short supply. Hence, book your rooms as early as possible. It was a great pleasure to join the Chaitya Pari party organized by Jain center of America, New York on Sept 29, 2002. 19 Buses full of members left Queens for Jain Temple near Atlantic City NJ. Mr. & Mrs. Ghelani and other members of the sangh received us and treated us tremendously well. It is an excellent example of how even a small community can serve a group of 1000 yatris. The executive committee and members of Jain Center of America, New York organized the whole event very well. Our Hearty Congratulations to Keshubhai Chandaria for receiving the Golden Jubilee Award from Government of Canada. JAINA has been invited by Institute of Jainology, to participate in a delegation to Prime Minister Shree Atal Behari Vajpayee. He will be awarded to be a Patron in Chief of the Manuscript Project. Mr. Nemu Chanderia will represent JAINA and deliver along with JAINA's letter, JAINA at a Glance and Education CD. We now have four more Jain centers as member of JAINA. Hence we now have 61 Jain Center members. The Shram Yatra organized by Mr. Ramesh Shah and YJA jointly will visit India to give a lending hand to efforts to rebuild devastated Kutch area. It is expected that 10 or more students will join to go to India. Wheels of hope and medical supplies project progressing at steady pace all throughout the year. Vardhman Nagar construction is steadily building up now. Starting Dec. we will have residents come in to stay in their houses. The dispensary work has begun. Again, as usual the Executive Committee is here to serve you, and we welcome any suggestions for our review. JAINA is working to enhance your activities at the center. Yours truly, Bipin Parikh, President JAIN DIGEST. "Wheels of Hope"- A JAINA Medical Equipment and Supplies program provides Surgical, Laboratory, and Operating room supplies. This program has also provided beds, mattresses, wheel chairs, walkers and crutches for the disabled and the handicapped. What are the reasons for tremendous success of this camp? Vijay Chheda, their US based trustee summarizes it below: * Professional environment and plenty of help from Paramedical, Lab technicians, and Nurses Loyalty from a number of doctors from USA; some of them have been attending the camp for the last 10 years. Patients requiring major surgeries are transferred to Mumbai. The trust provides all treatments free of charge including surgeries in Mumbai. This year there is a special focus and concentration on children's problems and diseases. You will be very happy, richly rewarded and blessed by donating your talents, expertise and a bit of your time to help the poor, the sick and the disabled! It provides the news about activities of all 61 Jain Centers of North America and their members. It educates us in the field of religion by publishing religious articles. It provides us the news about the activities of our youth. It also brings together Jain Youth of marriage age by publishing a matrimonial column. It publishes news about Jains living in other parts of world and particularly in India. The most important task of Jain Digest is to provide identity to Jains. Each issue of JAIN DIGEST is a result of love for scores of volunteers. The editor in chier is assisted by regional edito associate editors, regular and guest columnist all living in different part of continent. They all work by fax, phones and E-mail to put together a snapshot of our community in timely fashion producing the most visible evidence of unity among Jains of North America. Without pining monetary value on time and efforts of the volunteers, it costs about $40,000 per year to publish four issues of Jain Digest and send to every family in North America and Jain Sanghs abroad free of charge. The JAINA has created endowment fund for this purpose. So far $75,000 has been collected in this fund from Jain families who have contributed by becoming a life member of Jain Digest. The principle of endowment fund is never used to support Jain Digest, only the interest income is taken out every year to support Jain Digest. At the moment it amounts to about $4000 per year. Advertisement brings about another $6000 per year leaving $30,000 deficit per year. JAINA is committed to continue quarterly publication of Jain Digest free of charge by raising funds from generous donors. We don't know how long these donors will continue to subsidize Jain Digest. Ahimsa (non-violence) The Jain ecological philosophy is virtually synonymous with the principle of ahimsa (non-violence), which runs through the Jain tradition like a golden thread. "Ahimsa parmo dharmah" (Non-violence is the supreme religion) Mahavira; the 24th and last Tirthankara (Path-finder) of this era, who lived 2500 years ago in north India consolidated the basic Jain teachings of peace, harmony and renunciation taught two centuries earlier by the Tirthankara Parshva, and for thousands of years previously by the 22 other Tirthankaras of this era, beginning with Adinath Rishabha. Mahavira threw new light on the perennial quest of the soul with the truth and discipline of ahimsa. He said: "There is nothing so small and subtle as the atom nor any element so vast as space. Similarly, there Is no quality of soul more subtle than non-violence and no virtue of spirit greater than reverence for life" Ahimsa is a principle that Jains teach and practice not only towards human beings but towards all nature. It is an unequivocal teaching that is at once ancient and contemporary. The scriptures tells us: "All the Arhats (Venerable Ones) of the past, present and future discourse, counsel, proclaim, propound and prescribe thus in unison: Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture or kill any creature or living being." In this strife-torn world of hatred and hostilities, aggression and aggrandisement, and of unscrupulous and unbridled exploitation and consumerism, the Jain perspective finds the evil of violence writ large. The teaching of ahimsa refers not only to wars and visible physical acts of violence but to violence in the hearts and minds of the human beings, their lack of concern and compassion for their fellow humans and for the natural world. Ancient Jain texts explain that violence (himsa) is not defined by actual harm, for this may be unintentional. It is the intention to harm, the absence of compassion that makes action violent. Without violent thought there could be no violent actions. When violence enters our thoughts, we remember Tirthankara Mahavira's words: "You are that which you intend to hit, injure, insult, torment, persecute, torture, enslave or kill." 2. Parasparopagraho jivanam (Interdependence) Mahavira proclaimed a profound truth for all times to come when he said: "One who neglects or disregards the existence of earth, air, fire, water and vegetation disregards his own existence which is entwined with them" Jain cosmology recognizes the fundamental natural phenomenon of symbiosis or natural dependence, which forms the basis of the modern-day science of ecology. It is relevant to recall that the term 'ecology' was coined in the latter half of the nineteenth century from the Greek word oikos, meaning 'home' a place to which one returns. Ecology is the branch of biology, which deals with the relationships of organisms to their surroundings and to other organisms. The ancient Jain scriptural aphorism Parasparopagraho jivanam (All life is bound together by natural support and interdependence) is refreshingly contemporary in its premise and perspective. It defines the scope of modern ecology while extending it further to a more spacious 'home'. It means that all aspects of nature belong together and are bound in a physical as well as metaphysical relationship. Life is viewed as gift of togetherness, accommodation and assistance in a universe teeming with interdependent constituents. 3. Anekantavada (the doctrine of manifold aspects) The concept of universal interdependence underpins the Jain theory of knowledge, known as anekantavada or the doctrine of manifolds aspects. Anekantavada describes the world as a multifaceted, ever-changing reality with infinity of viewpoints depending on the time, place, nature and state of the one who is the viewer and that which is viewed. This leads to the doctrine of syadvada or relativity, which states that truth is relative to different viewpoints (nayas). What is true from one point of view is open to question from another. Absolute truth cannot be grasped from any particular viewpoint alone and because absolute truth is the sum total of all the different viewpoints that make up the universe. Because it is rooted in the doctrines of anekantavada and syadvada, Jainism does not look upon the universe from the anthropocentric, ethnocentric or egocentric viewpoint. It takes into account the viewpoints of other species, other communities and nations and other human beings. Samyaktva (equanimity) 4. The discipline of non-violence, the recognition of universal interdependence and the logic of the doctrine of manifold aspects, leads inexorably to the avoidance of dogmatic, intolerant, inflexible, aggressive, harmful and unilateral attitudes towards the world around. It inspires the personal quest of every Jain for Samyaktva (equanimity) towards both jiva (animate beings) and ajiva (inanimate substance and objects). It encourages an attitude of give and take of live and let live. It offers a pragmatic peace plan based, not on the domination of nature, nations or other people, but on equanimity of mind devoted to the preservation of the balance of the universe. 5. Jiva-daya (compassion, empathy and charity) All though the term "ahimsa is stated in the negative (a-non, himsa-violence), it rooted in the host of the positive aims and actions which have great relevance to contemporary environmental concerns. Ahimsa is an aspect of daya (compassion, empathy and charity), describe by a great Jain teacher as "the beneficent mother of all beings" and "the elixir for those who wonder in suffering through the ocean of successive rebirths". Jiva-daya means caring for and sharing with all living beings, tending, protecting and serving them. It entails universal friendliness (maitri), universal forgiveness (kshama) and universal fearlessness (abhaya). Jains, whether monks, nuns or householders, therefore, affirm prayerfully and sincerely, that their heart is filled with forgiveness for all living beings and that they have sought and received the forgiveness for all beings, that they crave the friendship of all beings, that all beings give them their friendship and that there is not the slightest feeling of alienation or enmity in their heart for anyone or anything. They also pray that forgiveness and friendliness may reign throughout the world and that all living beings may cherish each other. (Continued outside back cover) 2 Page #23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Jains, Jai Jinendra! Thanks to all for giving me the opportunity to serve as President of JAINA. I consider it to be a great honor, and I will do my best to further the JAINA cause. First, I would like to congratulate all of the past presidents for making JAINA a truly world-renowned organization. They have done a great job in promoting JAINA, such that it is now recognized by world-leading organizations such as the United Nations, World Religion Council, and the US and Indian governments. Your JAINA is working very hard to facilitate your Jain living needs. It is indeed a pleasure and a privilege to watch so many JAINA volunteers selflessly promoting various JAINA activities. Let me mention just a few: * * * Pathshala teacher's conference was held in Los Angeles with the support of the Jain Center of Southern California, Los Angeles. 26 North American Jain Centers' teachers attended the conference. Celebration of Ahimsa Varsh: Started with Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan's ahimsa conference in Edison, N.J. on March 13-14 2002. United Nations Celebration of Mahavir's Message meeting. 165 members participated of which at least 40 Non-Jain members were present and shared their views on Ahimsa. Thanks to Arvind Vora and the Jain Center of America, New York for organizing this program successfully. The first nationwide video JAINA broadcast presentation on TV Asia was on March 28, 2002. The theme was Mahavir's message and the broadcast was graced by the messages from Gurudev Shri Chitrabhanuji and Dr N.P. Jain. Beginning the JAINA Day Program at the Jain Center of Chicago in the form of a town hall meeting was on March 31$ 2002. Mr. Dilip V. Shah is planning more meetings nationwide. Mr. Ramesh Shah's "efforts for hospital supplies to India" was very much appreciated by members of local center. The Pratishtha mahotsav at Boston was a great success. Also the Pratishtha mahotsav in Detroit temple for 24 tirthankars in Bhoomti went very well as planned. World Community Service of JAINA has joined hands with World Medical Relief, Inc of Detroit and SloanKettering cancer research center of NY and obtained medical equipments and supplies worth one million dollars for the Ujjain Charitable Trust Hospital. The container full of life saving materials for the poor and the needy is already on its way to India. A Jain school built in Lachhwad (Bihar) from the donations collected jointly by the Tirthodhdhar Committee and the Pilgrimage Committee is fully functional - Thanks largely due to efforts and guidance of Acharya Shri Chandanaji of Veerayatan. I call upon all of you to sponsor a child's education cost of $250 for five years in the land where our Lord Mahavir was born and where today Jainism is almost extinct. Please contact Kirit Daftary or Dilip V Shah if you would like to sponsor a child. YJA Convention 2002 was a grand success. Every participant was happy that they could attend the convention in Mahwah NJ. Soon after that, the YJA members selected the new executive board. The Co-chairs are: Ronak Shah and Suchita Shah. They have many new activities planned around the Internet and many regional conferences. Let us applaud a great job done by previous exec. Committee led by Chintan, Birud and Ronak. Congratulations to Pravin Shah of JAINA Education Committee for releasing JAIN Education CD containing 2,000 files, which contain 10,000 pages of, printed material covering variety information on Jainism in English. The cost of each CD is only $5.00 including postage. Dr. Pradip and Darshana Shah are coordinating the distribution of the CD. Email - Pradoks1@aol.com if you wish to get one. Our World Community Services projects are progressing at designed pace. "Varthaman Nagar" near Bhuj has already started construction of houses and school plans are completed. The medical assistance program has shipped many containers full of hospital supplies to designated hospitals in India. JAINA started the "World Trade Center Victim's Relief Fund" and stand ready to help in anyway it can. JAINA has already contributed $13,000 to the victims to Fireman's Fund. * Jain Education Intemational Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ In the same venue, Veerayatan's Acharya Chandanaji's organization has set up 23 regular and vocational teaching institutes in Kutch and Saurashtra. Some of our young adults, Shayana Parekh and Kimberly Parekh, are going there to teach vocational education for one or more years. Please browse on the website jaina.org and examine a variety of items available to you like JNF and JAINA Focus. The JNF-MIS (Jain Network Forum-Marriage Information Services) participation activity, which was started online during the last convention, has been continued. We have created the JAINA Focus newsletter on the same website. This newsletter is intended to get to you timely information with convenient access via the Internet. I urge all Jains to inform Mr. Samprati Shah for publication requests of any reportable achievement, which he and his committee will then evaluate for, need to include in JAINA Focus. To facilitate your donations activities we at JAINA have established credit card acceptance services. Please contact our treasurer Girish Shah for details. * In new topics, We are working on ways in which all member societies can have access to highly acclaimed scholars from all over the world. I have requested all the presidents of larger Jain Centers to provide some portion of the time for scholars to lecture at smaller centers in the surrounding areas. YJP has planned their Fifth annual convention on October 12-14 in Montreal, Quebec. Please contact Sanjay Shah or their website. * Planning for the YATRA 2003 of Sameet Sikhar and nearby Tirths covering 87 Kalyanak bhoomis is well underway. Anyone interested should register soon as number of seats is limited and strictly on first come first served basis. Contact Dilip V. Shah at dilipvshah@aol.com for details. * 12th Biennial JAINA Convention is planned for July 3-6 2003 at Cincinnati. Under leadership of Anop Vora, Dr. Surendra Singhvi and Soha Shah with Convention Board and many committees, all activities are progressing at full force. Don't forget to register early in early bird phase starting Oct 15 2002. Our plans are underway to broadcast via Internet on topics like "Let's visit Delwada Temples" or "The lecture series for Paryushan parva" or "How similar is Jainism and modern science" etc. JAINA has decided to work on another milestone in instilling Jain Sanskar into our children at a very early age. The JAINA Publication Committee (JPC) has started an ambitious project of publishing a series of Jain Sanskar Animated Stories on CDs or VHS tapes for Children. Contact Dr. Premchand Gada at gadapb9jafna@pol.net for details. Again, I thank you very much to let us (the Executive committee) serve you. And with your support, we plan to do much more. I want to build many sadhermic bhavans near our Jain Centers. Thank you, and Jai Jinendra. - Dr. Bipin Parikh - President, JAINA THE JAINA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: 2001-2003 # TITLE NAME CITY ST. TEL. They offer the world today a time-tested anchor or normal imperatives and a viable route plan for humanity's common pilgrimage for holistic environmental protection, peace and harmony in the universe. JAIN COSMOLOGY Jains do not acknowledge an intelligent first cause as the creator of the universe. The Jain theory is that the universe has no beginning or end. It is traced to Jiva and ajiva, the two everlasting, uncreated, independent and co-existing categories consciousness in Jiva. That which has no consciousness is ajiva. There are five substances of ajiva: 1. Dharma - the medium of motion 3. akasha - space 5. kala-time Pudgala (matter) has form and consist of individual atoms (paramanu) and conglomerates of atoms (skandha), which can be seen, heard, smelt, tested and/or touched. According to Jains, energy, or the phenomena of sound, darkness, shade, heat, light and the like, is produced by conglomerates of atoms. The Jiva (soul) has no form but, during its worldly career, it is vested with a body and becomes subject to an inflow of karmic 'dust' (asravas). These are the subtle material particles that are drawn to a soul because of its worldly activities. The asravas bind the soul to the physical world until they have brought about the karmic result when they fall away "like ripe fruit" by which time other actions have drawn more asravas to the soul. 2. adharma - the medium of rest 4. pudgala - matter With the exception of the arihantas (the ever-perfect) and the Siddhas (the liberated), who have dispelled the passions, which provide the 'glue' for the asravas, all souls are in karmic bondage to the universe. They go through a continuous cycle of death and rebirth in a personal evolution that can lead at last to Moksha (eternal release). In this cycle there are countless souls at different stages of their personal evolution: earth-bodies, water-bodies, fire-bodies, air-bodies, vegetable-bodies, and mobile bodies ranging from bacteria, insects, worms, birds and larger animals to human beings, internal beings and celestial beings. The Jain evolutionary theory is base on a grading of the physical bodies containing souls according to the degree of sensory perception. All souls are equal but are bound by varying amounts of asravas (karmic particles), which is reflected in the type of body they inhibit. The lowest form of physical body has only the sense of touch and are therefore able to experience pleasure and pain, and have souls. Mahavira taught that only the one who understood the grave detriment caused by destruction of plants and trees understood the meaning and merit of reverence for nature. Even metals and stones might have life in them and should not be dealt with recklessly. Above the single-sense Jivas are micro-organisms and small animals with two, three or four senses. Higher in order are the Jivas with five senses. The highest grade of animals and the human beings also possess rationality and intuition (manas). As a highly evolved form of life, human beings have a great moral responsibility in their mutual dealings and in their relationship with the rest of the universe. It is this conception of life and its eternal coherence, in which human beings have an inescapable ethical responsibility that made the Jain tradition a cradle for the creed of environmental protection and harmony. NAMO ARIHANTANAM I bow to the arihantas - the ever-perfect spitural victors MANO SIDDHANAM I bow to the siddhas - the liberated souls NAMO ARYAIYANAM I bow to the acharyas - the leaders of the Jain order NAMO UVAJJHAYANAM I bow to the upadhyayas - the learned preceptors NAMASKAR MANTRA NAMO LOE SAVVA-SAHUNAM These five obeisances SAVVA-PAVAPPANASANO Erase all sins I bow to the saints and sages everywhere in the world ESO PANCH NAMUKKARO MANGALANACH SAVVESIM Amongst all that is auspicious PADHAMAMHAVAI MANGALAM This is the foremost. On the front cover: Symbol of JAINA officially adopted during the 2500th anniversary of Lord Mahavir's Nirvana (1975). The hand signifies friendly re-assurance and ethical responsibility of every individual. The word Ahimsa (Non-Violence) appears in the center of the palm. Anandghanji composed the most popular "Tirthankar-Stavan-Chovisi" which contains 24 Stavnas named Charam Nayan Kari Marag Jovatan Re, and dedicated to each Tirthankar. In addition he has composed Bhulyo Sayal Sanasar; more than two hundred Bhajans which resemble the style of wring Jene Nayane Kari Marag Joiae Re, of Mira bai and Kabirji and Surdasji. AFFILIATE NEWS: JAIN MEDITATION INTERNATIONAL CENTER In the 13th Stavan, the author praises Lord Vimal Nath as Anandghanji has attained self realization and is over joyed by the divine grace he has received from the Lord. Verse 4 of the 13ch stavan is an epic by itself: Sahib Samarath Tu Dhani Re, Pamyo Param Udar; Man Visarami Valho Re, Aatam Cho Addhar. Vimal Jin Ditha Loyan Aaj, Mara Sidhya Vachhit Kaj Anadghanji says to Lord Vimal Nath that my mind has now found a permanent place to rest in your lotus feet as I have found the most graceful and generous Master who has gifted me with self realization. Seeing the divine "Murti" of the Lord, Anandghanji says all my problems and miseries are over and now I am the ever lasting soul with bliss and happiness as he describes in the following Stavan: Ab Ham Amar Bhaye Na Marenge Asha Oran Ki Kya Kije; Gnan Sudharas Pije The master key for attaining self realization is summarized by the author in the 15th Stavan. Let us review the most important verse of this immortal composition of the author: Vegetarian Society had organized this year's convention at Udaipur, the picturesque lake-city. Gurudev, the spiritual guiding spirit of the Society, traveled to Udaipur immediately upon his return from the United States. The convention was held from Sept 28 to Oct 2nd, 2002 at Hotel Paras Mahal. The theme of the convention this year was wealth of Health through Yoga - Mental, Physical and Spiritual. The program was structured and conducted very ably by Dr. D. G. Gunde, who is a Senior Orthopedic Surgeon and the Director of G.J.G. Yoga Academy, having conducted over 500 workshops all over the world and also for leading corporates. Other useful programs were: Diet Therapy by Dr. Pratima Joshi; Man and the Mind by Shri Anil Kumar Malpani; and Conservation and Recycling of Resources by Dr. M.M. Bhamgara. Messages regarding the relevance of vegetarianism and the success of the conference were received from the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and other leading spiritual leaders. MAHAVIR INTERNATIONAL Pravachan Anjan Jo Sadguru Kare, Dekhe Param Nidhan Jineshvar; Hruday Nayan Nihade Jagadhani, Mahima Meru Saman Jineshvar. Dharama Jineshvar Gau Rangsu Taking advantage of Gurudev's presence in Udaipur, Mahavir International organized a meeting at the Town Hall to discuss the urgent latest developments in the Meat Industry in India. The Tenth Plan proposals of the Ministry of Agriculture were discussed, particularly to set up another 50 slaughter houses. Gurudev spoke on the need to curb violence against innocent animals, which have wider serious repercussions by culminating violence in society. Minister Dr. (Mrs.) Girija Vyas, a noted scholar, also spoke on the occasion . Happily, it was decided to drop the proposal for the additional 50 slaughter houses. Anandghanji declares the universal principle for self realization which can only be attained when one receives the true grace of the teacher (Sadguru). When the third eye called the divine vision or "Agnanetra" opens up, one can see the treasure of the universal truth and infinite knowledge in his own self and the illusion of the materialistic wealth vanishes. At the same time all the bondage of Karma melts away and one attains the state of a Siddha. In conclusion. Yogiraj Anandghanji has made a monumental contribution to the spiritual seekers of all faith by showing us a complete step wise process in each of his compositions on how to immerse in the divine nectar of Adhyatma "Masti" and expe- rience the divine peace by surrendering to the Lord. Let us pray to Lord Mahavir for His divine Grace using the 1" verse of Anandghanji's 24 Stavan: JAIN PRAYER AT QUEEN'S GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS In London, Alliance for Religions & Conservation had organised a multifaith function to Celebrate our Special Creation and the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. 9 faiths had been requested to present their message to the people of faiths had been requested to present their me this earth. lains through Institute of Jainology had chosen to recite 'Maitri Bhavnu Pavitra Zarnu'. Equanimity coupled with nonviolence is the essence of religious science. Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He has been universally acknowledged as the apostle of Ahinsa, the nonviolence. As such October 2 or some other date in the month of October is celebrated as Ahinsa day. It is therefore worthwhile to write about nonviolence in this issue of Jain Digest, particu- larly bringing out his contribution to the concept of Ahinsa. Almost every individual belongs to some religion. The Indo- Aryan religions are more concerned with wandering of the worldly beings from birth to birth and their principal objective is to get rid of the said wandering and to attain the liberation. The term 'liberation connotes the perfect purity. As such, spiri 1- tual pursuit consists of overcoming the defiling instincts so as to attain the purity. These overcoming and attainment interact upon each other. It is not possible to attain the purity without overcoming the defilement and merely overcoming it without the objective of purification leads nowhere. Lord Mahavir laid emphasis on the former, because at that time there was too much talk of inherent purity of soul. There were many persons, who laid down their own doctrines. Quite a few of them insisted that soul is pure and it always remains unadulterated. As such the spiritual pursuit consists of nothing else but of understanding the inherently pure nature of soul. They were right in the absolute sense. It is, however, a fact that the worldly soul happens to be in the state of imperfection. The exclusive emphasis on the inherent purity leads to ignoring the present imperfect state. Jainism therefore lays emphasis on the way of attaining the purity and lays down nonviolence, restraint and austerity as the means. As such, Dashvaikalik Sutra states: Dhammo Mangalam Utkittham, Ahinsa, Sanjamo Tavo; Devavi Tam Namanssanti, Jassa Dhamme Saya Mano. It means: Religion, comprising nonviolence, restraint and austerity, is supremely blissful, even gods bow to him, whose mind always stays in religion. There is a vital significance in associating restraint and austerity with nonviolence. It is not possible to observe nonviolence without resorting to restraint. A nonviolent person cannot afford to behave as he likes. He needs to lead a restrained life. Moreover, he has to undergo the rigors and hardships, that he may come across. For being equipped to undergo the same with equanimity and peace of mind, he needs to observe austerities. As such, restraints and austerities are inalienable parts of nonviolence. Ahinsa can be conceived in three phases. The first one is: 'Live without hurting others. In this concept nonviolence is restricted to human beings. That is normally observed by all the civilized societies. The second is: 'Live and let live. In this concept nonviolence is extended to other living beings. That is mostly observed in India. The third is: 'Protect other life even at the cost of your own.' That is Jain concept. With that concept in mind, Lord Mahavir risked his life and went to the abode of in m venomous snake Chandkaushik for conveying the message of nonviolence That concept is vividly exemplified in the following story. One of the principal disciples of Lord Mahavir was Muni Metarya. He is popularly known as Metaraj Muni. Once he went to the house of a goldsmith for alms. The goldsmith was making barley shaped grains of gold to be embedded in jewelry. Seeing the Muni at his door, he left his work and went inside to get some food. Meanwhile, a pet bird came and swallowed the golden grains taking them to be the barley. As the goldsmith came out with food, he saw that the golden grains were missing. Hence he asked the Muni about the same. For Muni it was a dilemma. He could not tell a lie and if he spoke the truth, the goldsmith would kill the bird for getting the grains out of its stomach. The Muni would then become instrumental to causing the violence. He therefore kept mum. The goldsmith asked him again and again, but the Muni would not reply. Since no reply was forthcoming, the goldsmith concluded that the Muni was hiding the grains somewhere. He could not afford to lose the costly grains and therefore decided to use force for getting the same back. As normal force did not yield the result, he decided to resort to more violent means. He brought a moist lace of leather and tied it tight around Muni's head. Then he made the Muni to stand under the sun. As the lace began to dry by the solar heat, it started compressing Muni's head. The compression continued to increase, as the lace became drier. Ultimately, Muni's eyes came out on account of too much pressure. But he took the pain as a consequence of his evil Karma and bore it with equanimity. That accelerated Nirjara, the process of eradicating Karma. All his Karmas were thus destroyed and he gained the omniscience. Jain Education Interational JAIN DIGEST. Metaraj, who was raised in the home of a Jain 26/JAIN DIGEST- WINTER 2002 Page #45 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Ahinsa, the nonviolence(cont.)... The strength of Satyagrah lies in the fact that every one has a soft corner at heart. That may be shrouded by the evil tendencies, but it can be awakened by compassion and by willingly undergoing the pain and hardships that may be caused by the adversary. What is needed is a heart throbbing with love and affection. That is called Vatsalya. One need not harbor ill-feeling for any one. That can prompt even the wicked to reciprocate. The internal purity and just as well as moral character can arouse kind feeling even among the wicked people. Gandhiji had pacified the temper to an extent where he felt affection even for those who differed from him. He had eradicated the fear. Alone and unprotected, he braved the threats of assassins. He declared that if he were to die comfortably in bed, he should not have been called the Mahatma. Food meant to him nothing more than the fuel to keep the bodily machine running. He kept rigorous control over all other needs and had annihilated the desires The concept of nonviolence was till then mostly restricted to not causing physical hurt. The concept meant that if some one hurts or abuses us, we should not reciprocate and should forgive him. Gandhiji insisted on extending the concept to every level. If a drunk abuses, if a delirious hurts us, do we retaliate? Do we not pity their lot? The wicked also are disease stricken and should be dealt with compassion. His concept of just treatment to everyone, refusal to tolerate injustice and equality of every one led him to fight against the social evils like untouchablity. He called it a bane and fought against it till it was eradicated. Similarly he removed the fetters that the women were suffering from and brought them in line with the males. His main contribution lies in use of Ahinsa in the political realm. Since foreign rule was the greatest injustice to the people of India, he started the struggle for independence and gave the call for civil disobedience. By abstaining from violence during the struggle, he wrested the moral advantage from the British rulers. By breaking the law peacefully, he showed the injustice of the law. By accepting punishment voluntarily, he confronted the captors with their brutality. By undertaking fast unto death, he demonstrated the extent to which he was willing to go for defending the truth. He thus rendered the continuation of British rule an impossibility. That eventually resulted in grant of independence. Gandhiji's approach is grossly being misused at present. The people resort to Satyagrah for redressing their grievances, but disregard his insistence on moral standards. Their grievances are mostly feigned and are against the interests of the society. They forget that Gandhism minus morality is not merely zero; it has a negative value. The sooner they turn from that, the better would it serve Gandhiji's cause. Surprisingly enough, Jains had adopted several abuses from the Hindu community. Untouchability was the foremost. Since we had borrowed the concept that eclipse occurs by virtue of obstruction caused by Rahu and Ketu, and since they were considered evil planets close to the rank of Shudra, we believed our temples to be polluted by an eclipse and they were required to be washed after an eclipse. We had also adopted the lower stature for women and were embedded with the concept of higher and lower classes, etc. The Jain concepts of non-possession and the purpose of monastic life were distorted. Gandhiji's mission changed that. His contribution to Jainism is thus immeasurable. No wonder that thousands of Jains, inclusive of some monks, joined his movement and accepted his leadership. His concept of non-possession or Aprigrah is of utmost importance to Jainism. He termed non-possession as essential for observance of Ahinsa. Non-possession normally leads to inactivity, to parasitism; Gandhiji rendered it active while practicing it to the utmost extent. Many of his close followers managed to see that their sons were well placed. Nehru, in particular, virtually set up his dynasty. But the progeny of Gandhij became a part of the common folk. In the name of Ahinsa we, Jains, have developed pacifism. We have encouraged inactivity on the ground that every activity leads to Karma. But Jainism has no objection to the laymen undertaking the required activities. It urges doing everything with Yatana, the awareness. We are familiar with the concept of Samiti. Yatana is the essence of Samities. We should observe that to the possible extent and undertake the activities with detached mind. We should also develop the sense of amity for all. By virtue of birth in a Jain family, we have inherited the privileges, like vegetarianism, non-alcoholism, tolerance and not killing or hurting. We should become conscious of those privileges and go ahead by developing servicing and helping attitude. Can we afford to remain unconcerned at the distress faced by others?. On the global scale we are now witnessing two contradictory trends. One is the rise of vegetarianism in West on health ground. We need to bring the significance of prevention of cruelty to the notice of such people. The second is the rise of terrorism in the form of hijacking, suicidal attacks etc. Its roots lie in fanaticism, intolerance, misplaced faith and easy availability of weapons of mass destruction. How to avert that is a problem. It seems that only way is to extend compassion and the right understanding to the evil-doers. There is no alternative. That method will take time but we need to have patience for that. The new board convened this past August in Chicago for four days. There was very little sleep and a lot of chai, but the projects that were drafted plan to be the best ever. Our hope and mission for this year is to play "a much great part in our member's daily lives." To that end, YJA has taken some significant steps... YJA will host six Regional Conferences during the next six months. "Regional Fest" will kick off Thanksgiving Break in Houston and conclude during Martin Luther King weekend in Atlanta and Chicago. Other destinations include Toronto, Los Angeles, and Easton (PA) during Winter Break. Spots are filling up fast. Register online at www.yja.org or contact karishma.shah@yja.org for more information. YJA created "Michammi Dukkadum" e-cards for Jains worldwide to show their forgiveness. YJA also added a new segment to the website explaining the meaning and importance of Paryushana. With continuing website projects, we hope to spread Jain ideals to young Jains across North America. This December and January, YJA will be sending 10 youth to the Veerayatan site in Bhuj (Kutch), India. Veerayatan is an international organization established over 20 years ago by Acharya Shri Chandanaji, the first woman to receive the title of Acharya in the Jain tradition. Veerayatan is committed to extending the concept of spirituality and service to humanity. The youth will be helping the earthquake affected town by teaching, providing health care, and performing administrative tasks. YJA can also use your financial help to subsidize the Jain youth who will be helping those less fortunate. Please contact ami.shah@yja.org for more information and how you can help! With YJA growing year after year and continually initiating more projects, this year's board has created an ad-hoc committee for YJA Convention 2004. This creation will allow YJA Executive to focus on other national projects while still hosting an unbelievable national convention. The ad hoc committee will supervise the local convention committee in the throwing the best convention yet! If you are interested in joining the select ad-hoc committee, please email chairs@yja.org. Jain Education Intemational Page #53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Compassion in Action YJA has teamed up with Veerayatan, an organization dedicated to spreading service and spirituality to humanity, this winter to give back to those less fortunate in our homeland. YJA's sole goal is to "spread and promote Jainism through the youth" and there is no better way to fufill that then to put "Ahimisa in Action." We are sending 10 youth to Bhuj, India from December 25th to January 10th. The Bhuj site was created in response to the Earthquake in Gujarat. These youth will help teach and perform administrative tasks during the day. They will make a tremendous difference in the lives of orphaned kids in the Bhuj area, by putting compassion in action. Please help by making a donation, which will go towards subsidizing the youth YJA will send. Please contact Ami Shah, ami.shah@yja.org, for more information on how to help out in this wonderful cause. Host City Convention Committee Wanted! This past July 4th, YJA hosted its 5th biennial nation youth convention in New Jersey entitled "Walking the Path of Jainism." It was an overwhelming success. Nearly 1000 youth gathered and shared their heritage, learning from scholars and meeting other like-minded youth from all over the world. With YJA Convention 2002 closed, the journey begins for YJA Convention 2004. The New Jersey Convention Committee performed an outstanding job, providing more sessions and greater variety than any previous convention. It will be a tough feat to beat, but each YJA Convention continues to be better every time. YJA Executive will release the bid guidelines for Convention 2004 in January 03. Potential host cities will have two-three months to write a bid packet, providing details for the next convention and stating why they should be the host city. If you are interested in hosting a convention, please email cochairs@yja.org. A convention takes a year a half of solid work, fifteen committed members, a supportive community, but the culmination of all that hard work is unbelievable.
