S. 3 4 7 11 12 13 17 From the Editor The influence of Indians, specifically Jains, over the last three decades is showing up all over the North American Continent. With this influx there is an ever increasing number of Jain and Hindu-Jain temples that are being established demonstrating the Indian community's willingness to encourage a deepening of their roots in this new land. We find that the temple is a focal point for our religious, traditional and cultural activities. The photograph of Mahavir Swami from the Jain Temple of Houston Texas on the cover symbolizes the great effort that is taking place throughout North America to establish these new temples. Alberta, Cincinnati and Philadelphia are among the cities that have recently had Pratishtha Mahotsav while Buffalo, NY will be celebrating Pratishtha on Memorial Day weekend, 1996. This issue carries a data form for the Jain Directory being published by the Jain Society of Greater Boston. They are providing a very valuable service and I urge you to fill out this form and send it on to them as soon as possible. Our belief and commitment to nonviolence and vegetarianism have created strong informational interest in Pizza Hut's pizza and mad-cow-disease. This issue carries information on these subjects. The Jain Digest's wider circulation has created the need for additional funding. Harshad Shah Cover: Bhagwan Shree Mahavir Swami - Houston, TX. May 1996 President's Message In January, I visited India and met with many Jain leaders. I had the opportunity to visit Moolbidri, an ancient and sacred place for Jains, which dates from the 5th Century. The temples are very old and contain idols made from various types of precious gemstones. A visit to places such as: Bahubali, Gomateshwar, Dharmasthal, and Humcha reminds one of our ancient and rich heritage. In Ahmedabad, I had the opportunity to meet and have discussions with community and religious leaders from various Jain sects. They expressed appreciation for the efforts of JAINA and have offered to participate with JAINA in future international projects. JAINA's Executive Committee met in Dallas, TX on March 8 - 9, 1996. The townhall style meeting was well attended. Many of the issues and concerns that were raised at the meeting have been assigned to the appropriate subcommittee for resolution. The Jain Centers of Houston and Philadelphia successfully organized their Pratishtha Mahotsav and the Jain Sangh of Alberta, Canada and the Jain Center of Buffalo, NY have scheduled their Pratishtha Mahotsav on April 7, 1996 and May 26, 1996 respectively. The Young Jains of America will hold their Second Biennial Convention in San Francisco, CA from July 4 7, 1996. This convention will provide a forunrto explore and share information about Jain philosophy, rituals, beliefs and ideas. The theme of the convention is, "Jainism: Integrating Philosophy and Practice." A record number of young people have registered to attend. I sincerely urge each and every one of you, who receives and reads the Jain Digest, to become a Life Member by donating $101 or giving generously to JAINA's General Fund, see page 24. HEADQUARTERS NEWS Chitrabhanuji's Anniversary and Birthday Celebrations Executive Committee Meets in Dallas/Fort Worth The Executive Committee of JAINA met in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on March 9, 1996. The members who were present were: Manibhai Metha, Dhiraj Shah, Kushal Bhaiji, Hansaben Varia, Jagat Jain, Bipin Parikh, Ramesh Jain, Prem Gada, Dilip Shah, Aravind Vora, S. Khamesra, and YJA representatives: Nikhil Shah, Rakesh Shah and Rish Mehta. A committee chaired by Arvind Vora is making plans to celebrate, at the national level, the dual events of the 25th anniversary of Gurudev Chitrabhanuji's arrival in North America and his 75th birthday. An itinerary of Chitrabhanuji's visits to various centers around North America is being worked out. As part of this celebration, the Jain Youth Association of New York, NY in coordination with JAINA is sponsoring an Essay Competition that is open to Jains, of all ages, who reside in North America. The focus of the competition is - Gurudev Chitrabhanuji: Jain Wisdom for the Youth. The age groups are: up to and including 10, 11 to 14, 15 to 18, and 19 and above. Anyone entering should review the following books by Chitrabhanuji: The Miracle is You, Realize What You Are, Ten Days Journey into the Self, Philosophy of Soul and Matter, and Twelve Facets of Reality. You may also want to read the two biographies A Man with a Vision by Rosenfield and Wave of Bliss by N. P. Jain. All entries must include your name, address, phone number and age. Jainism believes that the Universe and all its substances or entities are eternal. It has no beginning or end with respect to time. The Universe runs on its own by its own cosmic laws. All substances change or modify their forms continuously. Nothing can be destroyed or created in the Universe. There is no need of some one to create or manage the affairs of the Universe. Hence, Jainism does not believe in God as a creator, survivor and destroyer of the Universe. However, Jainism does believe in God, not as a creator, but as a perfect being. When a person destroys all his karma, he becomes omniscient and omnipotent. He is a liberated soul. He lives in the perfect blissful state of Moksha. This living being is a God of the Jain religion. Every living being has the potential to become a God. Hence Jains do not have one God, but Gods are innumerable and their number is continuously increasing as more living beings attain liberation. CANADA Mahindra Mehta Regional Editor Edmonton, AL On April 7,1996, over 425 people including Jains from all over Alberta witnessed the Pratishtha Mahotsav in Edmonton. Pratimaji of Bhagwan Rushbhdev and Parsvanath were installed in the Jain Temple. Pratishtha Mahotsav, Alberta Ottawa, Ont. The Ottawa Jain Society celebrate Mahavir Jayanti on March 31, 1996. Although the community is small the event has become a tradition with a large number of Jains and non-Jains participating. This year almost 400 people joined in the celebration. Toronto, Ont. The Jain Society of Toronto elected its new Executive Committee for 1996-98 under the leadership of the new President, Sobhagya Khamesra. The Society wishes this new Executive Committee much success in their many undertakings. Mahavir Jayanti was celebrated on April 7, 1996 with nearly 800 attendees. May 1996 REGIONAL NEWS NORTHEAST Vinay Vakani Regional Editor Buffalo, NY The Jain Society of Buffalo is very busy in making plans for the Pratishtha Mahotsav which will be taking place at the Hindu/Jain Temple on Memorial Day weekend, 1996. Washington, DC The 1996 elections for executive committe were held and a new slate of officers were elected under the leadership of President, Manoj Dharamsi. Six hundred people celebrated Mahavir Jayanti on March 30, 1996. Regular classes for children began ten years ago and now we have 50 students attending regularly. There is a set curriculum with graduation requirements which include course work, presentations and an oral examination. A unique "Adopting the Jain Center for a Day" program has been recently initiated to help offset the operating expenses for the Jain Society. This program encourages member families to select one or more days of the year to celebrate a happy occassion, observer an auspicious day or commemorate a special event. The family pledges to make a minium annual donation of $101 for that day, for at least 5 years. On the day they have adopted the family is encouraged to visit the Center, perform religious activities, help with cleaning and maintaince, or arrange children centered activities. So far we have over 90 familites that have adopted one or more days. The Society has joined with 11 other Hindu Temple organizations in the Washington area to form the Association of Hindu/Jain Temples of Metropolitian Washinton. The interfaith Diwali program is expected to have over 10,000 participants. JAIN DIGEST SOUTHWEST Jadavji Kenia Regional Editor Dallas, TX The Jain Society of North Texas has had visits from Samaniji and Sunandaben Vora who spoke on Aatma-Karma interaction and the value of human life among all possible forms of life. In November many of our members attended the Pratishtha Mahotsav in Houston. In December, our Youth Group sponsored a canned food drive. Over 400 lb. of vegetarian food was collected for the needy. Adults also participated in the "Shoe Box Ministry" project where toiletries were donated to the homeless people in the DFW metroplex. Our monthly meetings include: discussion of the Tattvarth Sutra, poojas, Swadhyay and a once-a-month board meeting. Discussions always include something new to learn. Currently there are 4 youth classes every Sunday. Younger children meet twice a month and the older ones meet 3 to 4 times a month. After class the older children meet as the Jain Youth Group. In March, 1996 we hosted the JAINA Executive Committee for their regular meeting. Our Youth Group hosted a multi-faith conference for Jain young people from Austin, Houston, Lubbock, Tulsa and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Speakers representing Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Zoroastrianism spoke. We concluded the month with a huge gathering to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti on March 31, 1996. Day Two began with a Bhaktamar Pooja program conducted by Bhattarak Shri Charukirthiji with approximately 150 families participating. It was done with a great sense of spirituality. On Day Three we celebrated Panch Kalyanak Pooja conducted by our Shankheshwar Parshvanath Mandal. The attendance was beyond our expectations. Days Four and Five there was Padmavati Devi Pooja and activities which included Namokar Mantra Jaap and lectures by invited dignitaries - Kastursagarji Maharaj, Bhattarakji, Amrendra Muniji, and Samaniji Madhurpragna and Charitpragna. Day Six festivities included Siddha Chakra Poojan conducted by Shri Babubhai Kadiwala and an evening Bhavna. On Day Seven the festivities started in the morning with Adhaar Abhishek Pooja. In the afternoon, Babubhai Kadiwala directed the stage program of Bhagwan Mahavir's Janma Kalyanak followed by Bhavna in the evening. Day Eight was a spectacular mile-long procession which included a horse driven buggy, 3 floats, a convertible and other passenger cars. Approximately 1,500 people participated in the procession which was led by a Jain Youth Band and included Raas-Garba and chanters. The procession was followed by a public meeting addressed by Kastursagarji, Bhattarakji, Amrendra Muniji, Samani Madhurpragnaji, Samani Charitpragnaji, Pandit Dharamchand, Sulekh Jain, JAINA's president, Manibhai Mehta, Prakash Parikh, President of Gujarati Samaj, Virendra Parikh, President of Vishva Hindu Parishad, the Indian Vice-Counsel in Houston and our U.S. Congresswoman, Sheila Lee Jackson. The morning of day nine began with 108 Arhat Abhishek Mahapooja and was followed by Pratima Sthapan of Tirthankar Bhagwan and Dev-Devis and chanting of mantras by Shri Babubhai Kadiwala, Maharaj Kastursagarji, Shri Bhattarakji and Shri Amrendra Muniji. It was a once-in-a-life-time experience. The temple was packed to capacity and a helicopter showered flowers at the exact time of Pratishtha. The new temple was formally opened on day ten. Sattar Bhedi Pooja was performed. We were very fortunate to have Muni Shri Kastursagarji Maharaj and Bhattarak Shri Charukirthiji from India to help guide us through the Pratishtha Mahotsav. Hundreds of Jains called them to express their displeasure at finding out that their pizza sauce contained beef base. But their Customer Service representatives were trained to distract and diffuse all inquiries on this issue: they did everything from pleading ignorance to denying that beef base was ever used! But many Jains were not satisfied with this ambiguous response, and asked for a written statement. The various written statements from them, however, conflicted with each other! Some letters said that their pizza sauce contained beef base; others said that only their bread stick sauce and stuffed-crust pizza sauce have nonvegetarian ingredients. Has the public pressure now made them switch to a veggie base? Or do they not know what they're using? When asked to explain these contradictions, they were unable to provide an explanation. MAD COW'S DISEASE We are deeply saddened to learn of the millions of cows in the U.K. which will be put to death, due to concerns about Mad Cow's Disease, or, BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). JAIN DIGEST How did it spread to such a large number of cows? The animal industry's view of the cow as a machine results in their complete disregard for ethics, or the health and well-being of these gentle creatures. Cows are routinely rendered remains of other dead cows, sheep, and other animals!! This unnatural act thus has turned a vegetarian animal into a non-vegetarian - or worse yet, a cannibal! Why would the animal industry feed dead animals to other animals? As Howard Lyman explained on "Oprah", it costs about a hundred dollars to properly dispose of a diseased dead cow. But by "rendering" her, and using it as feed for other cows, agri-businesses not only avoid paying this amount, they save on feed also. This has accelerated the spread of bovine disease. So recently it has been banned in the U.K. as a result of concerns about B.S.E. but is still widespread in the U.S.! So far the U.S. FDA and the USDA have turned a blind eye to this issue. Let the FDA and the USDA know your views. World Community Service world Community Service Dhiraj Shah - Chair with the help of the Jain Center of America, NY, the World Community Service presented a check for $7,000 to Dr. Anil Patel, director of the Women's Health Center. The Center is located on the banks of the Narmada River which borders Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The Center trains traditional birth attendants in safe, modern methods of child delivery and helps fulfill an overwhelming demand for Pre and Post-Natal care by offering a hygienic and safe clinic and delivery room. Should YJA and other youth groups be do- ing more? Well here's your opportunity to get directly involved with YJA. For the first time in its history YJA will be opening up its executive board positions to general elections by its members. Cur- rently, YJA is divided up into six regions, with two board members each: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Southeast, Midwest, and West. In addition, the Executive Board has three general coordinators who are chosen by the board at the beginning of the term. To ease the transition for this first election, there will be one position per region open for election. This will prevent a potentially high turnover from disrupting board continuity, particularly since we expect the upcoming convention to cause youth interest to be greater than ever. The returning board members will also be able to better guide the newly-elected board members. Despite convention, financial strain, YJA continues towards its mission with new programs and activities Foster Focus is another of YJA's current projects. This "adopt-a-center" program allows youth groups across North America to work on nationally-driven projects. This year, the Atlanta Jain youth group is coordinating an exhibit and poster session for the convention, while the St. Louis youth are compiling the second edition of the YJA Scrapbook. his team, much of the literature is almost complete. For our local representatives (we have at least one such youth liaison for almost every Jain organization in North America), we plan to distribute a YJA Resource Kit containing information ranging from lists of external organizations to outlines of activities with the youth groups can do. In order to expand our youth network around the world, YJA plans to develop active relationships with international contacts in the United Kingdom, Africa, and India. If you have access to the internet, then you can find a storehouse of information and the latest news on the YJA Home Page (www.utexas.edu/students/yjal). Our recently redesigned web site features up-todate information on YJA, international, and regional news concerning Jain youths. You can even register as a YJA member on-line. The home page has proven to be a great medium of communication. Unfortunately, our future projects are dependent on funding. All of our future projects will be difficult to materialize without the help, including financial support, of our strong Jain community. YJA needs your help. As you may know, YJA is planning the biggest ever Jain youth convention, with over 500 participants and a budget of $150,000. Yes, we are charging registration fees, but we kept the fees low so that youths (mostly non-working students) could still afford to come. We thus need to raise $50,000... and we've been steadily approaching this goal, thanks to the help of many. The Jain Center of Northern California held a Sangeet fundraiser that raised $10,000 from tickets and raffle sales in a single night! In addition, the Northern California Jain community has also pledged another $7,000 to the convention. Now, that's incredible. Unfortunately, we still need to raise more.
