JAINA's sun is rising. Do you see the rainbow....? The Pittsburgh JAINA Convention, where the current executive committee assumed responsibility for guiding JAINA, heralded the arrival of an era of unity, democratization, professionalism and financial stability in our organization. Contents Headquarters News .................. 3 Calendar of Events ....... ... For Your Information.............. Regional News ....................... Affiliate News .................... Convention Program ............ Committee News.............. International News .............. 22 A History of Jainism ............. 23 Happy Occasions .................. Publication Fund. New Life Members............... Matrimonials ....................... JAINA is flying and I see the sun rising in the sky over the Jain communities of North America. I see a rainbow, with a spectrum of colors that symbolizes hope for Jains all over the world. Just like these seven colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo, and violet symbolize many wonderful things, let me share that vision with you-my hopes, wishes and vision for the future. .............. JAINA providing literature, funds and the manpower to strengthen or start a pathshala in every Jain center. An ever increasing senior citizens' programs, extending a helping hand to our elders and benefit from their experience. From the Editor Increasing the number of temple facilities serving the Jain community. Moving forward - because of the JAINA Charitable Trust, "A Million by the Millennium" and the many other fund raising programs, JAINA is becoming stronger financially. JAINA is on a solid financial foundation upon which to build for the future. Building a healthy community through the increased participation of everyone. This can be seen in the involvement of ladies, our children and those people who are Jain by choice. Jai Jinendra. Jain Digest salutes the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago for hosting the eighth Biennial JAINA Convention. Headquarters News lists the many ac- complishments of the current group of over 200 volunteers, still much more needs to be done. Our best wishes are with the upcoming group of volunteers who will lead the way in the on going process of improving JAINA. Our active participation at all levels will insure a vibrant and forward moving organization. JAINA is an association of associa- tions. Today there are 50 Jain centers in North America. Their incoming directors are recognized in this issue. We would like to publish a series of articles on the history of many of these centers. The current issue carries the history of the Jain Center of Alberta, Canada. In addition, we would like to write about the venerable Jain institutions throughout the world. Young Jains of America and Letters to the Editor will appear in the next issue. Your help is needed in keeping our mailing list up to date. If you have moved, please let us know. Finding that you have moved through the post office costs JAINA additional funds. It means that the magazine is discarded by the post office and you missed out! We must eliminate this waste. Welcoming the vital and fresh ideas of the younger generation into JAINA. Last year their convention in Chicago drew over four hundred young adults, gathered to discuss their role in the future of Jainism. More than 3,000 children and young adults are expected to attend the 1995 - 8th Biennial JAINA Convention. Increasing the interfaith activities, which nourish tolerance and compassion and develop an understanding of other religions. By blending this spectrum of ideas we get peace, tranquility and harmony. Through the practice of Ahimsa and Anekantvad in our daily lives we come together and accommodate each others differences in order to build our community's contribution to an important, healthy, understanding and growing aspect of the world community. Jai Jinendra. Mahendra Khandhar, the Founder and President, presented a plaque to Subodh Sheth, the immediate past president, in recognition of his leadership and the contributions of his executive committee members. An exciting schedule of events has been planned for 1995 that will address adult and family participation. The Fifth Annual Medical Camp was held on Sunday, May 21, 1996. This event will be jointly sponsored by the Jain Center of Southern California and the Jain Bhavan. Jain Study Circle, Inc., New York, NY held its Annual Meeting on April 16, 1995 at Mahendra and Asha Pandya's residence on Staten Island, NY. After completing the Annual Meeting there was a lively discussion on the main topic of the meeting - Penance (Tapashya) in Jainism. As expected, the participants in the evenings discussion brought forward the role of penance or tapashya in Jain philosophy that they considered important. Some of the participants thought that tapashya was a means to develop self discipline, controlling desires and emotions; others considered it to be a cleansing process. An individual's capacity to perform tapashya, especially long-term-fasting, including the possible interfering with one's normal duties was also discussed. Duli Chand Jain noted the fine line between the selfsacrifice and self-directed violence. The Jain Study Circle conducts Quarterly Meetings in the New York metropolitan area. At these meetings no one gives discourse or lecture, but each participant is encouraged to express their own thoughts on the topic of discussion. Any one who is interested in attending these meetings, please contact Harshad Doshi at 718/ 961-7408. The Jain Meditation International Center, New York Gurudev Chitrabhanuji was on tour to Hong Kong and Singapore during the month of March, 1995. Jains are involved in religious practices throughout these areas. The Jain Society of Hong Kong arranged for a five day lecture series during which many people of all religions participated. A three day seminar was arranged in Singapore. In this tour Gurudev Chitrabhanuji spoke about the deeper meaning of nonviolence and that it implies more than kindness to all living things and the practice of vegetarianism, but also abjures violence to ourselves. Jain Association of Young Adults (JAYA), Los Ange les has elected a new committee Nilay Dedhia, President; Satyam Patel, Vice President; Rajesh Shah, Treasurer; Ashita Shah, Secre- tary; Jalpa Dalal, Hemal Dalal, Pina Shah and Amisha Mehta as Members-at-large. JAYA is actively recruiting young adults 16 years old and above to coordinate social and religious activities and to share experiences and knowledge of mutual interest. JAYA's activities are also coordinated with the Jain Center Youth Council (JCYC) of Jain Center of Southern California and JAINA's Young Jains of America (YJA). For further information please contact Rashmi Shah, JAYA coordinator, at 310/541-8367. A forum on "Growing Up In America" that was jointly organized by JAYA and JCYC was held on Sunday, March 12, 1995 at the Jain Center of Southern California. The purpose of the forum was to discuss the challenges and concerns of growing up in bi-cultural environment - Indian and American. The forum was moderated by Sailes Jain, a pathshala teacher and was attended by 50 or more students ranging in age from 10 to 16 years old. A panel of 11 young, Indian, professionals, who had spent most of their young adult life growing up in America, responded to questions posed by the students. The panelists provided excellent insights into the challenges of growing up in America and how the differences in the Indian and American cultures may pose significant challenges for young people of Indian heritage growing up in America Many times Indian parents have not adapted to such differences and understood the cultural differences these factors and generation gap have led to problems and conflicts between parents and their children. However, the opinions and experiences shared by the young professional panel tended to conclude that - open communication, frequent dialogue, mutual understanding and a positive attitude are the key elements for fostering successful childparent relationships for Indian families in America. One major problem identified was, Indian parents lack the knowledge about the vast number of career options, opportunities and possibilities that are open for students. Parents tend to focus Concept of God in Jainism Jainism believes that the universe and all its substances or entities are eternal. It has no beginning or end with respect to time. The Universe runs on its own accord by its own cosmic laws. All substances change or modify their forms continuously. Nothing can be destroyed or created in the universe. There is no need of some one to create or manage the affairs of the universe. Hence Jainism does not believe in God as a creator, survivor and destroyer of the universe. However, Jainism does believe in God, not as a creator, but as a perfect being. When a person destroys all his karma. he becomes omniscient and omnipotent. He is a liberated soul. He lives in the perfect blissful state Moksha. This living being is a God of the Jain religion. Every living being has the potential to become a God of the Jain religion. Hence Jains do not have one God, but Gods are innumerable and their number is continuously increasing as more living beings attain liberation. It has also donated $33,000 to support a project sponsored by Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana. provide education for these displaced children. Once again the World Community Service of the JAINA provided $33,000 for this project. The BJS has a clearly defined vision and organizational structure. At the primary level it is an organization of volunteers, who are all Jains, who formulate policy and approve budgets. At the secondary level it is a professional organization consisting of people who implement the objectives and ensure their achievement. The BJS plans a Gurukul Style School for NRI Children The future plans of the BJS include education, Gurukul style, for the sons and daughters of NRI Jains. The school will offer an indepth exposure to the Jain religion and its teachings while maintaining the highest standards of education. Their aim of this school is to groom an international Jain citizen. The school is planned to be established in Pune. In addition, BJS plans to run a special three week seminar that will provide an indepth introduction to Jain religious practices and their significance. The course will not only include lectures and visits to the prominent Jain ashrams, but also will allow the participant to meet with the India Industrialists to discuss future opportunities in India. This seminar will be open to all NRI and will be operated on a not-for-profit, noloss basis. The plans to establish a Jain Univeristy are not too far off in the future. Shantilal Muttha, President of the BJS was in Buffalo, NY recently to receive the JAINA's donation to the BJS. JAINA has also provided help to the victims of the floods in Mississippi, the drought victims in Gujarat, India and the refugees of Rwanda. Bhartiya Jain Sanghatana The Bhartiya Jain Sanaghatana (BJS) is India's foremost social service organization specializing in child and woman welfare, support for the handicapped, public health and awareness programs, calamity and disaster management, emergency relief work, scholarships for the underprivileged and many more humanitarian activities. It has achieved enormous success in promoting and gaining social acceptance of the concept of mass marriage. This concept has made people realize that daughter's happiness is in no way connected with how much money is lavished on her wedding day in the form of dowry. Related issues that BJS has identified include: the young widow, divorcees, improper match-making, the rise in divorce rate and the drop in birth rate of female children. The BJS has propagated the idea of re-marriage and vadhu var sammelan (a meeting ground for couple before marriage) to tackle this issues. Above all, BJS has played a pivotal role in establishing peace during the communal riots between Muslims and Hindus in December, 1992. Several prominent Jain and non-Jain spiritual leaders undertook Pada Yatra to establish peace and harmony. In September, 1993 the BJS was called upon to support the victims of the earthquake that struck in the Marathwada region of the Maharashtra. It provided an infrastructure for the rescue mission for the tens of thousands of people who had lost every- thing. It provided tons of food, clothing and medical supplies at the earthquake site within hours. World Community Service of the JAINA provided funds to rebuild 55 houses destroyed during that earthquake. Realizing that the earthquake had affected children midway through their school year, BJS took a thousand boys under its care with an aim of providing them with a chance to rebuild their broken lives. A school and orphanage was set up in Pune, India to Opening Ceremony. Vasai, India JAINA Starts Free Dispensary The WCS started a primary health care center to serve the needy and the pilgrims in the village of Vasai, Kutch, Gujarat, India on January 4, 1995. This is the first of many clinics envisioned by JAINA to be started in India. The Clinic is staffed by a full time physician and a doctor's assistant who will treat sixty patients a day. Pope John Paul II Rome, Italy - His Holiness Pope John Paul II welcomed a delegation of Jains in a private audience on February 15, 1995. The members of the delegation were participants in an Interfaith Dialogue that was organized by the Institute of Jainology, an international body of Jains in England. The delegation met with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue on February 14. 1995 where it was agreed upon that: 1. It is appropriate that a dialogue be fostered between Jains and Catholics and that the meeting had been a useful contribution to the strengthening of that dialogue. 2. Jains are encouraged to enter into contact with Catholic authorities in the countries where they reside. This is particularly important in India. 3. It was recognized that there is no central authority in the Jain community. Nevertheless the Institute of Jainology in London, England can play the role of coordinator. 4. The Council agreed with the Institute that the dialogue could involve the following: * an exchange of publications * periodic exchange visits * information exchanged on the progress of the dialogue in the different areas, such as joint meetings on topics relevant to both parties. Members of the delegation were: His Excellency Dr. L. M. Sanghvi - the High Commissioner for India to the Court of St. U Thant Peace Award for Sanghvi New Delhi, India - Dr. L. M. The Jain population begin to increase in the early 1980's at the height of the oil boom. Many came from Africa, India and England. The Jains became very active and participated in community service with various Indian groups and societies. The Jains became an intregal part of many of these societies and held high positions in them. Jains are highly respected by all communities. In 1988, the family of Mahendra Jain brought Bhagwan Mahavir's Pratimaji to Edmonton. The Hindu Culture Center gladly offered a space in their Center to install the Pratimaji. In 1989, the official Pratishta was conducted in Edmonton and Bhagwan Mahavir's Pratimaji was installed with a traditional celebration and with much religious fervour. This event was attended by representatives of all the Indian communities from all over Alberta. Nearly 600 people came, making it the largest gathering of its kind for a religious function. The ceremony was performed by Shree Sushil Kumar Kalia and a Souvenir Book was published and distributed to all free-of-charge. This was an important step in bringing the awareness of Janism to Albertans. Since that event all important religious days and festivals are observed regularly in the Hindu Culture Center. The Province of Alberta is one of the richest provinces in Canada, with 255,285 sq. miles and a population of nearly 2.3 million. Edmonton is the largest city and capital of Alberta with a population of 700,000 people. The first settlers came to Alberta in 1861. It's economy is based on oil, gas, coal, wheat, forestry and their related industries. It also has a flourishing tourist industry. There are over 30,000 Indians living in Alberta. There are 35 Jain families. Most of them live in the two major centers of Alberta - Edmonton and Calgary. There are six temples of various denominations and six gurudwaras, one of which is the largest outside India. A replica of Golden Temple of Amritsar, is nearing completion in Edmonton. There are three Hindu Temples and six Gurudwaras in Calgary and several others in other towns in the Province. In 1992, the Jain families with the blessings of the Hindu Cultural Center and Jains all over Alberta, began raising funds to build a Jain Temple within the Hindu Temple complex in Edmonton. The Temple was officially opened during the Mahavir Jayanti Celebration in 1993. Over 400 people gathered to participate in the Pratishta ceremony, in spite of a severe snow storm. A second souvenir book was published. The new resident priest, Shree Shiv Shankar Dwevedi, conducted the ceremony. The priest now conducts all of the ceremonies on all important occasions. Thus Jainism has reached an important milestone in Alberta. As the number of Jain families has increased, the Jains began to celebrate some festivals such as Puryushan and Nirvana Day privately by late 1970's. These celebrations began to influence other communities, especially the Hindus. Jains have always maintained a small prayer room in their homes. In 1990 and 1993, His Holiness Shri Charukirti Bhattarak of Moodbridi, India visited Alberta and addressed many including an address at the University of Alberta. His visit was widely publicized because it was the first visit by a Jain Monk to Western Canada. In 1990 the first home Chairyalaya (Jain Temple) was established in the home of Jitendra and Savita Shah in Edmonton. Pran Pratishta was conducted by Shree Charukirti Maharaj. Mulnayak (principle idol) is Bhagwan Parswanath. Everyone is welcomed for darshana and pooja at their home. In 1980, Mrudula Mehta observed an eight day fast during Puryushan and all the Jain families met at Mehta's house to celebrate this occasion. This event began the community's aware- ness for the need of a regular meeting place where dialogues and observances of important festivals could take place. Jain families conduct pooja every Sunday at the temple and meet regularly during the year. Two more Pratimajis of Bhagwan Rushbhadev and Bhagwan Parswanath have been ordered from India and will be installed in the Temple in near future. Jains celebrated the Mahavir Jayanti officially in the Hindu Temple, Edmonton in 1986. Many Jains travelled from all over Alberta to participate. A pooja book was published for this occasion. Shree Sushil Kumar Kalia, the Hindu Culture Center's Priest who conducted all poojas for the Jains gave them much encouragment. This is a first in a series of articles that will chronicle the development of the Jain movement in different parts of North America. If you have the history of your Jain Center chronicled in your area, send it to the Jain Digest in care of the Editor in Chief. The Jains in Calgary are also very active. They meet regularly and celebrate all the important festivals. On many occasions all Jains, from all over Alberta travel to Edmonton where a Jain Center has been established.
