Jain Centers throughout North America held meetings to pay tributes to him as he touched many of us through his personal charm and his noble deeds. For JAINA, he, along with Gurudev Chitrabhanu Ji, became one of the spiritual founding fathers. This Shraddhanjali issue of Jain Digest includes personal reflections of Jains from all walks of life. These remembrances were complied by Hansa Varia, Jadavji Kenya, Anant Jain, and Atul Khara. The accompanying special commemorative issue was put together by International Mahavir Jain Mission, Siddhachalam. The primary objective of Jain Digest is to inform us of activities of Jain communities throughout North America. The magazine reports on activities of JAINA head June 1994 2010_02 President's Message The sudden demise of His Holiness Acharya Sushil Kumar Ji has struck a severe blow to every believer of non-violence, Jains throughout the world and in particular, every Jain Community in North America. Although he is no longer with us his spiritual force lives on and accompanies us with confidence, charging us with the task of fulfilling the dream of spreading the principles of non-violence and anekantwad (multiplicity of views) as taught to us by Lord Mahavir and the other Tirthankers. Guruji, as he was affectionately called by his devotees, was a spiritual force behind JAINA, an organization that serves all Jains in North America. His ceaseless efforts to help us maintain our religious heritage and organize ourselves locally, nationally and internationally will be deeply missed. He was a great visionary, an Apostle of Peace and a torch bearer for the principles of Jainism. He recognized the needs of today's changing world and gave us Siddhachalam, the first Jain Teerth (pilgram place) outside of India which plays a major role in spreading the principles of Jainism. His absence will be profoundly felt, especially at the first Young Jains of America Covention in Chicago this July. Everyone has been eagerly waiting for this event. Our children have done an excellent job in organizing it. The convention's theme, Religion and Culture-Learning for Tomorrow reflects our children's awareness of the importance that the principles of Jainism will hold in their future and their readiness to pick up that torch and carry it forward. I am confident that this convention will become a memorable memorial to that spirit and the future of Jainism in North America. JAI JINENDRA. I will miss him. Rajiv Jain (16), Laguna Niguel, CA. ACHARYA SHRI SUSHIL MUNI JI AFFECTED US ALL Guruji taught us about the importance of the Jain reli- gion. We learned about many of the Jain principles and forms of meditation. We were very impressed with his candid knowledge of Jainism and his teaching methods. The Jain community will miss Sushil Muni's inspirational lectures. Neha N. Dedhia (18), San Jose, CA. His own life was an expression of the absolute non-injury in thought, word and deed. His eyes revealed and expressed this extreme compassion for the suffering of all mankind... What is actually needed is that the societyshould be re-educated in the true meaning and purpose of religion, and religions themselves should be pruned of all superstitions and all the factors of disharmony, and non-essential details should be ignored and essential principles emphasized and brought to the notice of all. Thus, his mission was to regenerate all religions in their own social set-up. Surendra Jain, Greenville, SC Guruji was a nice and caring man. He helped a lot of people in the world and everyone loved him. It is sad that he is gone now. I have so many memories about him... He had a lot of knowledge. If you tell him a name (or a word) and then ask him what that meant, he will know... When he was 60, he still continued to devote his life to peace, non-violence, and protection of animals... We will all miss him because he is not here with us today. I wish he was still alive right now. Sheel Mehta (10), Hoffman Estates, IL. REMEMBER Realizing that absolute non-violence was not feasible in a twentieth century life style, Guruji advocated minimum violence. He taught us that "... being a true Jain may seem like you would have to be perfect, but there are things we can do in our daily lives which will help us toward this perfection. Not eating meat, minimizing consumption, such as extra clothes or too much food, are just some of the things one can do. However, do not let somebody make these decisions for you. It is solely up to you. It is important that whatever angle of Jainism you wish to follow, that you do it from the heart, and not what your parents or anyone else tells you. Kiran Jain (17), Placentia, CA. Remember his walk, remember his style, Remember his talk, remember his smile. Remember his teachings, Remember his preachings. Remember "Om Namo Arihantanam" Remember Guruji as the soul of the sun. Remember white light!" Remember his hair turning white. Remember the tone of his voice, Remember Jainism is by choice. Remember Jainism is Dharma, Remember not to get bad Karma. Remember Jainism isn't a trend, Remember Guruji was my friend. Ravi Jain, Placentia, CA. LETTING GO I believe that I took my Guru for granted. I thought he would always be around. Guruji was, is, and always will be my spiritual father. Just seeing or even thinking about him keeps me going. His presence instantly brought upon a smile. Not the kind of, 'I need to impress someone'smile, but real peace. I don't cry for him, because I know he has succeeded to a higher spiritual plane. In fact, I celebrate him. We must pray for his soul, like the proper disciple should, without any remorse. This experience, as painful as it was, is teaching me how to let go. No more can I continue to be an anchor to another's soul. Sanjiv Jain, Laguna Niguel, CA. Shri Sushil Muniji was respected outside the Jain community. He was very instrumental in promoting the most basic Jain principle of Ahimsa all over the world. He inspired many communities to build Jain temples outside India. His forward thinking allowed many Jains overseas to learn more about Jainism. Narendra Maniar, Atlanta, GA The Augusta Jain Community owes a great tribute to Acharya Sushil Muniji for he was the one who conducted the Mahavir Swami Murti Pratistha at Hindu Temple of Augusta in September, 1991. We will always remember him for his contributions to our community and the world. Augusta Jain Community, Martinez, GA. AND THAT'S HOW I FEEL I knew Guruji for my whole life. I am not an expert on who he actually was but I do know him a considerable amount. He always put others before himself. His heart was free of evil and filled with love. Guruji was a person who I was able to talk to and he would understand. I will say a prayer for him tonight and hope (Guruji) possessed thorough knowledge of other religions and human understanding at world-wide level. Mahendra K. Dosi, Alpharetta, GA. It is intriguing to note how Jainism, as a non-vedic, anti-brahmanical, sect has survived in India, and now spreading intact across the oceans. There is no doubt this high degree of mobilization of the Jains as a community across North America is to a great extent attributable to Acharya Shri Sushil Muniji's efforts. In the tradition of some of the monks in 100 B.C. to 850 A.D. who, in order to maintain the Jain tradition, had to gain royal support, and therefore compromise religious order to some extent, Sushil Muniji too, searched for a paradigm shift in the Jain beliefs. In doing so, he was controversial, yet very effective. We must continue his work through harmony and unity within our divergent practices and beliefs, while also maintaining good relations with the communities at large. Dr. Anant Jain, Dallas, TX. (Guruji) always gave logical answers to lot of mysterious questions related to Jainism. His knowledge on Jainism was deep. He said he had recited Namokar Mantra more than 900,000 times in his life...... Guruji always believed in the powers of Namokar Mantra and he preached his followers to believe in it whole-heartedly. Navin S. Dedhia, San Jose, CA Guruji was a Sadhak and a social visionary. Throughout his life and up to the last moment he worked hard for the unity, harmony and peace in the community, country and the (world) environment. It is a great loss for the humanity at the time when his quest for a non-violent and peaceful coexistence wasgaining acceptance among the world leaders. Mahendra Shah, Fl. Acharya Sushil Muniji has done more than any one single individual in bringing the Jains together in America and in providing the courage in practice of Jainism. My children and this community gained courage, vision, and pride in practice of Jainism through his teachings at Jain camps in Niagara Falls. Ravi Pahade, Getzville, NY. Sushil Muniji's death is an irreparable loss for Jain community. His message of non-violence, peace and oneness of all living beings with the world at large will stay forever with us. Guruji's SIDDHACHALAM Ashram in New Jersey is a living example of his hard work, dedication to a cause and self service. Manoj C. Maniar, San Diego, CA. Acharya Sushil Kumarji Maharaj was a dynamic teacher. During many of his visits to the Dallas area he taught us techniques of meditation and Arhum Yoga. These techniques became an asset to my traditional counseling skills, and from my professional and personal experience I know that they have proven to be very effective in healing and stress management. Guruji was a promoter of peace and non-violence, and has made a significant contribution in the field of holistic approach to healing. His great teachings shall live with us forever. Nalini Shah, Richardson, TX. 16 2010_02 Acharya Sushil Kumarji Maharaj was one of the trail blazers for youngsters growing up in North America. He taught them the fundamentals of Lord Mahavir's teachings, which has given them confidence in themselves and faith in their religion. He was a visionary and an ambassador of peace and a champion of the teachings of Lord Mahavira. Jain Center of Central Ohio, Columbus, OH. Guruji had a unique way of explaining difficult concepts by using simple stories. Here is an example of his way of clarifying the difference between Dravya Karma and Bhava Karma. "...A man was driving a bicycle, and he hit another man. If the man gets up after getting hit and confronts the rider of the bicycle, what should the rider do? The cause of collision is the part operation of Dravya Karma. If both people fight or argue viciously, they form Bhava Karma, which in turn will cause fresh new Dravya Karmas. If the rider apologizes and says he was really sorry from the heart, then no more bad Karmas are formed... Path of Khsama (asking forgiveness) is the greatest wisdom a human should have. Nirmal Dosi, Scholar's Visitation Committee, JAINA. Guruji was more than a religious leader. He symbolized patience, strength, and happiness. He taught me things that I would never hear my parents or teachers say. He showed me how to believe in something that offers protection and comfort. He was not only a teacher and leader, but my good friend. I could ask Guruji any question, no matter how silly, and he would have an answer. He would reply with as silly an answer as the question I asked." Mamta Jain (15), Irvine, CA. A FRIEND A friend with a heart pure and clean, a child's heart, unbiased, undivided love, knew no bounds. The only time I couldn't bring myself to smile was two Fridays ago when my mom called me and told me about Guruji's passing away. Like many of us here, I cried and felt a deep sense of loss. And even though we are taught by faith that death is neither a beginning nor an end in and of itself, I still can't help but feel sad at this time. I would like to end today with a small poem about a true guru. Most of his life he (Guruji) worked for promoting brotherhood and fraternity among the different groups of people, particularly he endeavored to forge unity of all Jains. Though he belonged to Sthanakvasi sect, he set up there (at Siddhachalam) the Jain temple with Shwetambar as well as Digambar idols. He also did not insist on wearing Muhapatti which had been inseparable emblem within Sthanakvasi sect. His concept of unity of the Jains has been articulated in the Jain Center at Bartlett (JSMC). Ketan Sheth, Tulsa, OK. One of his greatest achievements was the sense of direction that he provided for the Jain youth of America. With the establishment of Siddhachalam, Guruji gave us a central foundation from which all of us could build and expand our knowledge of Jainism. He provided us with the tools to craft our own understanding of Jain philosophy and help purify our body and soul. Guruji was a man of great warmth, compassion, and understanding. He shall never be forgotten. Ashish A. Shah (19), Orange, CT. GURUJI: A LIVING EXAMPLE OF ANEKANTVAD In early days of Guruji's stay in America, he used a traditional mask (Muhapatti), as would any Sthanakvasi monk. Vivek (my son), 7 years old at the time, curiously asked Guruji what the purpose was of the mask. Guruji not only cheerfully explained the purpose, but also gave him one of his masks, which delighted Vivek. In the later years, Guruji discontinued the use of the mask, at least in public, because it narrowly identified him as a conservative Sthanakvasi. Similarly, he encouraged establish- ment of temples, and worked hard to build a beautiful temple at Siddhachalam in New Jersey. These examples demonstrate Guruji's broad based approach and leadership to unite the entire Jain community, regardless of the traditional differences and sub-sects. Guruji provided a great living example of the practice of ANEKANTVAD. Hans Maru, Brookfield, CT. Guruji loved children. He had one single goal for them, which was to instill the finest principles of Jainism into them from a very early age. He successfully achieved that through his book Song of the Soul. He taught all children the very powerful aspect of non-violence, through which they develop the feeling of friendship for each other and learn to live in harmony with all the people in the world. To me, this is the most important contribution Guruji made in this country to change our lives. He developed our children into true Jains, which would not have been possible without his relentless effort. The establishment of the Siddhachalam temple is one of Guruji's greatest achievements, especially for a monk who belonged to Shwetambar Sthanakvasi sect. Jainism / Non-Violence and Peace when: July 1, 2, 3, 1995 where. Cherry Hill, N.J. sponsored by: The Federation of Jain Association of North America hosted by The Jain Sangh, Cherry Hill, New Jersey EARLY BLOCK REGISTRATION OPPORTUNITY TO EXHIBIT Have you ever thought about getting your entire Sangh involved? Have you ever thought giving your youth a project about Jain philosophy, stories, principals and educating them in a fun way? It would be wonderful for your local Sangh to plan an exhibit at the convention. You may win first, second or third prize... these kinds of projects create strong bonds and pride in your Sangh... and you look good as a leader!!! One of the great accomplishments of '93 convention was the exhibit from Boston Jain Center and Cleveland Jain Center. They were dynamic, participative, educational for all ages and fun!!! Our youth and children love these kinds of educational tools. At this time next year the 1995 JAINA Convention will be history. Those who did not attend will be hearing from their friends about the smashing success it was, how they enjoyed it, and how their children enjoyed it because they made new friends and learned more about Jainism. The Jain Sangh of Cherry Hill, NJ is already working very hard to make it the best convention ever. But only you, the members of other Sanghs in North America can insure the success of such a large event by giving ideas, volunteering to share some of the responsibilities and above all by attending. We are expecting 10,000 happy, excited visitors cheering their leaders, being with their friends, relatives and loved ones, but most importantly committed to Jain religion and traditions. You will want to be there. The Cherry Hill Sangh is proposing Early Block Registration wherein families can register in advance through their local Jain Center and in turn receive a discount in the registration fee and motel charges. It will also enable families, of a given center, to live in the same motel making it easy for their children to perform in one of the evening programs. Jain Center presidents are requested to get early commitments from their members during Paryushan Parva. Tocommit your local Sangh to a specified number of tickets. Names of families preregistering in this manner will appear in the convention souvenir under their Sangh's names as supporters. Suggestions for creating an exhibit: 1. Non Violence and its Benefits 2. Anekantavada 3. Aparigraha 4. Jain Monk's Life 5. 14 Dreams of Trishala 6. Jain Teerth 7. Vegetarianism 8. Re-incarnation We shall be more than happy to work with you on any ideas and subjects you may have in mind.
