अथवा
२७४. वर्षावास में रहे हुए भिक्षु को प्रहार अथवा पानी के लिये गृहस्थकुलों की तरफ जाने और थाने की इच्छा हो तो, आचार्य से, अथवा उपाध्याय से, स्थविर से, अथवा प्रवर्तक से अथवा गरिए से प्रथवा गरण मुख्य से अथवा गरगावच्छेदक से, अथवा जिस किसी की आज्ञा में विचरण कर रहा हो, उससे अनुमति लिये बिना जाना नहीं कल्पता है। किन्तु प्राचार्य से यावत् जिसकी आज्ञा में विचर रहा है, उससे पूछकर अनुमति लेकर जाना थाना कल्पता है। भिक्षु उन्हें इस प्रकार पूछता है "हे भगवन्धनुमति प्राप्त होने पर मैं आहार अथवा पानी के लिये गृहस्थों के घरों की ओर जाने और आने की इच्छा रखता हूं।" इस पर यदि वे अनुमति प्रदान करें तो उस श्रमण को गृहस्थकुलों की श्रोर भोजन और पानी के लिये निकलना तथा प्रवेश करना कल्पता है। यदि वे प्राज्ञा प्रदान नहीं करें तो उस भिक्षु को गृहस्थ घरों की तरफ भोजन और पानी के लिये जाना थाना नहीं कल्पता है।
प्रश्न - हे भगवन् ! आप ऐसा क्यों कहते हैं ?
उत्तर- प्राज्ञा देने अथवा न देने में आचार्यगण प्रत्यवाय विघ्नों के जानकार होते हैं।
274. During paryuşana, monks and nuns desirous of making a round of house-holders' homes for seeking alms, should not set out without the permission of either the acarya, or the upadhyaya, or the sthavira, or the master ( pravartaka ), or the ganin, or the head of the gana, or the founder of the gana, or whoever be the superior. They may go only if they have permission to go. A monk should so address his superior, "Sir, with your permission I want to set out towards householders' homes in order to seek alms". He may go if permission is granted; but not otherwise. Why is this being laid down? Because acaryas know of good or bad consequences (pratyavāya).
