ખરી દયા કેમ થાય? સન ૧૯૦૮ માં અત્રેની ઇસલામ હાઈસ્કૂલમાં જીવદયાના શિક્ષણ મી. લાભશંકરની સુચના ઉપરથી શેઠ મગનલાલ કંકુચંદ મારફતના-જીવદયા ખાતામાંથી રૂ. ૫૦) મોકલી આપવામાં આવેલ, અને નિબંધ લખાવવાનું નક્કી કરેલ. તેમાં ૪ અંગ્રેજી લેખે લખાયા. તે શ્રી કોન્ફરન્સ ઓફીસ મારફત શેઠ મોતીલાલ જમનાદાસ સેવકલાલ જે. પી. તથા ડે. ત્રિભુવનદાસ લહેરચંદ એલ. એમ. એન્ડ એસ. ને પરીક્ષકો નીમી તપાસાવ્યા જે પૈકી મી. એસ. વી. પઠાણ નામના એક મુસલમાન બંધુ તે વખતે એલ એલ. બી. ના અભ્યાસી હતા (હાલ પાસ થયા છે. તેઓને નિબંધ સર્વોત્તમ લખાયેલ જાહેર કર્યો છે. પરીક્ષાના જણાવવા પ્રમાણે તે ગૃહસ્થને ૧ લું ઈનામ અને બીજાઓને અનુક્રમે ઇનામ વહેંચી આપવાને ઇસલામહાઇસ્કુલના સેક્રેટરી સાહેબને લખી જણાવ્યું છે. આ નિબંધની ઉત્તમતા માટે મી. લાભશંકર કે જેમણે પણ આ નિબંધ વાંચી ઘણીજ પ્રશંસા કરી છે તેમણે કોન્ફરન્સને આવા પ્રકારની હીલચાલ ચાલુ રાખવા મજબુત ભલામણ કરેલ છે. તેથી તેવા ઉપયોગી નિબંધને આ માસિકમાં પ્રકટ કરવા જરૂર વિચારી છે. જે વાંચકને સંપૂર્ણ મનન કરવા ભલામણ કરવી અયોગ્ય કહેવાશે નહીં.

Eating is for living and praying.
(While) thou believest that living is for eating.
God created man for the execution of a special mission which, it ought to be his duty to carry out to the best of his abilities. That mission may succintly and most appropriately be described in the word of a Hindustani Poet.
God created man for sympathising with others;
Otherwise there was no lack of angels to sing his praises.
The Fulfilment of this duty viz to be kind to those around us, be they rational or irrational creatures, should be our aim and object and our thoughts ought always to be engaged in devising means which would enable us to accom. plish it. In this paper I do not propose to discuss in detail the various avenues which lead to this coveted garden, but will take only one of them and show that it is possible for man to live without doing any harm to other creatures inhabiting this infinitesimally small portion of the all-pervading:Kingdom of God.
